Musicology. Another flop.

From what I heard of that tired ass James brown rehash first single, the album will be another flop. Prince will blow his chance the same way he did with rave by putting out a crappy album. I just wonder how bad he's gonna blame sony and how many band members he's gonna fire, as if it's their fault?

I'm with you on this one, my friend. Not at all impressed by this single (at least what i've heard so far). It's incredibly weak. Maybe there's an incredible remix that will be released to radio. Unless there is, don't expect people to burn up the phone lines calling in to request this piece of mediocrity.

No offense but,how can you call it a "flop" when you haven't even heard the whole album yet? I'm sure there are some stronger songs than the first single.

That's right Davideye - and there is nothing wrong with the first song either. Some people on this site are so full of negativity it's sickening. Too bad for them if they don't like the cd or don't even give it a chance.

Make it three in a row then.

Sony/Columbia will get the song into the Top 10 regardless of the public's response.

Again, the negativity here astounds me. The album isn't even available yet and you're deeming it a flop based on your opinion of the first single? How can you call the whole album a "flop" if you haven't heard it yet?

I'm hopeful that the rest of the album is stellar. The title track - at least for me - leaves much to be desired. It is - as was stated by the originator of this thread - just more James Brown rehash, and I'm quite sick of it. I also agree with those who are of the opinion that this track is essentially Batdance + Return of the Bump Squad.

Don't misconstrue my comments as implying that I somehow hope that the album is a flop, because nothing could be further from the truth. I just find the title track (at least what we have heard) to be uninspiring.

1 - how do you get Musicology sounds like Batdance?
2 - even if it did, how would that be a bad thing? Batdance is one if his biggest hits ever.

Musicology will be in the top 10, no question about it.

Never said that sounding like Batdance was a bad thing. The little bit we saw on Tavis Smiley just reminded me of Batdance quite a bit. I actually like the Batdance track. I just hate to see recycling, that's all.

I quite like the single...thumbs up! It's fun and FUNKY!
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Chartlisting is speculation, but I doubt top ten. Prince's last chart hit was TMBGITW...he just doesn't do it anymore for the masses because the music he puts out is mediocre (by Prince standards.) Musicology is a weak track, that sounds like the last (independent) single he tried, The Work Pt.1 (I wasn't feeling that one either.) Prince has never had the ability to pick singles (he always argues that he wants to challenge his listener-no, you just can't pick singles.) eek If it sounds like doom for this single Prince has no one to blame but himself (although we know he will blame everyone else.) He is a victim to his 'creature of habit' ways and history is bound to repeat itself. Be honest (all of you supporters of this single) You didn't absolutely lose your mind the first time you heard it, say like the first time you heard a song like "When Doves Cry"...there is no spark, it may be technically perfect but that is not what we loved about Prince we loved his rawness, not this polished "Vegas" act...and yes, he has left the buliding razz

Peace, Serveitupfrankie*

Absolutely right, but I'm looking forward for this album and I'll hope that on this album are a couple of songs which I like/love.

My first impression of the new single was that I like the sound, the horns... but I know that he could do better.

Enjoy the upcoming tour! Live music counts. I am from Germany and I have to wait to see and enjoy for a long time. This hurts and not the news single.

Funny you should cite WDC as your example. I was quite underwhelmed the first time I heard it. In fact, it was a good few weeks before I *loved* the song.

IMO, appreciating "Musicology" will be the same sort of experience for many people.

folks really need to calm it down and wait a few days till the album actually gets put into people's hands before they make a concrete decision.

sorry, i have to agree...not so jazzed with the single now, but that could change if i hear it again. only heard the version played on Leno. but certainly holding hope for the album as a whole.

damn, made me think back to the early 80s, remember these lead off singles:

--Little Red Corvette
--When Doves Cry
--Raspberry Beret
--Kiss
--Sign o the Times

sad trying not to live in the past, trying not to live in the past...

I think it is a little premature and silly to base the whole album on one single that YOU don't like. I mean I heard "Call My Name" and I liked it a lot. So I guess for me I am going to wait and see how the album does. Right now he has a lot of heat around him and this is a good thing. Also musicology is growing on me. Most of my friends who are casual Prince fans love it. I remember when U got the look came out. I hated it and still am not fond of it. However that did not stop the song from being the hit and we all know how well the album did. Everyone put down your crystal balls and stop trying to predict the future. At the end of the day it is just another album regardless of how well or poorly it does.

Serveitupfrankie, you're right - Prince simply does not know how to pick singles. He can offer whatever guise or reasoning he wants for the poor choices, but he just picks the wrong songs as singles. I'm not saying that the songs themselves are poor (few people have the combination of musical and lyrical acumen that Prince possesses, and that's no lie); they're just bad choices for singles.

i have a better bet. I bet that you wont release a record this year and that even if you did it would flop even harder than New Power Soul.

Musicology the single gets me fucking psyched, but i'm probably half your age and therefore half as bitter.

Prince is god, all the old bitter fans please step aside and let the new generation take over, we'll no longer be needing your sinicism here... thanks, now go sit around thinking about when you were young, thin and had hair while you wait to die. Prince is in good hands now and hopefully we wont end up like you.

Acutally that sounds about right to me.

And whoever said it's gonna be top ten, I don't know what you're smoking, but that song is a load of cack.

What makes me wonder is how long this musicology thing has been going on...remember that day the video was made...we read the reports here...and soon after there has been a rumor with Sony...they decided to go that road late, very late...them Prince & Sony.
It seems to me not like love at first sight.
Concerning a remix of the title track...wow you want the single next week in the radio...with a remix done by someone who is a household name in remixing...a sure shot...no way..or the remix has been done already.

To me this seems all like an expedition in the jungle of music business...spontenious...made I am wrong and the plan is like letting look like it is spontaneous...who know's but Prince himself.

Wait and listen...and wonder again...'cause maybe it make's its way into the top 10 all by himself...and that is more important it has to stay there for weeks and grow on the people...than it would be a success to me...smile.

Wishing all the best...

Peace
