Prince and his Blackness

Scary huh?
Not really. I think Prince has always wanted 2 speak out on black issues but in the early days that wouldn't have sold records so he stuck 2 more light hearted stuff.
This morning on Cable TV there was a crowd discussion on black musicians and the audience refused 2 accept Prince was black. disbelief
It just makes me smile when alot of Orgers over the past few weeks have commented that Prince is getting very 'black'. disbelief He's always been black and had 2 deal with racism, predjudice and has always held his pro-black views so when U now hear him putting songs out like 'Family Name' don't think it's something new.
I myself am mixed, South Asian Indian and Caribbean black but it seems that once U have a drop of black blood the world sees U as black-unless Ur talented like Prince or Mariah Carey and then every1 wants 2 go in2 how unblack U R disbelief
4 years the West has taken people from other cultures and reinvented them 4 their own convinience

Why is it. Alot of people will not just accept that Jesus didn't have blue eyes, there is no Santa Claus and Prince is Black.

Wow, that's deep.

I hate that mistral pic though.

I've never thought of prince as anything but black. He's always been black to me and nothing less. He's very talented and intelligent; intelligent enough to keep his mouth closed on certain issues when he needed to also.

I think anyone would be proud to be black, if they understood all the struggle we've endured and still came out on top, regardless of any bigots efforts to keep us down. I'm sure there are more ethnic groups, that have persevered against racism, however, I don't think that any other race has contributed more to America's entertainment & sports industries like blacks have.

It's a privilege to me, so, if some are reinventing races just to avoid being black then that's their lost.

The truth is that Prince represents musical genius and traditionally that was reserved 4 the Mozart's of this world-do people have a hard time believing a black guy can be so talented or are they just trying 2 find a link between them and their idol that doesn't neccessarily exist.
4 example I love not like but love Queen and Freddy Mecury but we don't have shit in common so should I be going around sayin' he was mixed with black or something 2 feel more comfortable about liking his tunes. Hell no. biggrin

lol @ the drag song

I've always regarded Prince as a black man. Well, maybe more chocolate, but still...

I loved songs like Race and Color, but it seemed a little contrived when he tried to compare his struggles with Warners and his feeling of being a slave to the struggle of black people.

And them's my two cents. biggrin

G. what I'm about to say is not really directed towards you but reading your post made me have to say this.

Frankly, we've contributed a whole hell of a lot more to America than entertainment and sports. What amazes me is how this has all been forgotten. Truthfully ask the question, where would America be today had Africans never been stolen from their homeland? There wouldn't be an America. This country was built on the blood, sweat, and tears of MY ancestors. THEY did the work! And for what?? To be treated like less than second class citizens for generations to come. The fact that we are even discussing Prince and his blackness today demonstrates just how much racism still has not changed in America, and probably will not in my lifetime. I can only pray this: that someday a future generation will really look at the REAL history of America, and finally get it right!

What, do you mean the TV audience was predominantly white and wanted to see Prince as a part of their own heritage just because he is rather light-skinned? Or black people who didn't think Prince was dark-skinned enough?

But I can tell you this, whenever I get frustrated by all the dicotomies prevailing in the Anglo-American lead world today I just think of Prince. That sorts it all out for me better than any sociological study. "Think Prince!" - they should print that on bumper stickers.

For me, Prince is and always has been black. I am white, but it's "black music" what I dig, meaning hiphop, soul, funk, jazz, reggae, etc. Prince is black and I want it that way.

I have a new respect for you now, despite what some people say here, there's nothing wrong with what you said. If anybody has the right to be offended about it, it would be me, I'm the nephew of one of the individuals in the pics above. But I'm not offended, becuz u said absolutely nothing wrong.

The good thing about Prince is...how he brings people together. Both Tavis and Cornel West have mentioned this at some point: Prince not by the color of his skin, but by the music that he fused together, also fused people together. And that's very evident RIGHT NOW, this very minute, I'm at a website with Rock, Punk and funk fans. Me myself, I'm a Old School, Slow groove, Funky R&B, smooth-classy Jazz, 'real Hip-Hop' kinda guy. But I respect 'all' music, as I'm a musician myself. Prince at a very young age opened my eyes to other music and people, as I'm sure he did alot of you.

I kinda get what Prince was trying to say on the majority of TRC...it's evident when you go to a concert of his...

It's truely a Rainbow...

Sueme

I was reading some other newsgroups this week to gage reactions to Prince's performance at the Hall of Fame. I saw a comment in one newsgroup from someone who referred to Prince as "a mulatto." So there are people who don't realize that Prince is black.

Not to get any shit started or anything wink, but part of the reason for the confusion over Prince's race is partly his fault from his early interviews where he was confusing everybody about his ethnicity.

Then you have the clueless people who watch Purple Rain and believe that Prince is a mulatto because of the color of his mom in the movie. Also, Prince has a long line of women over the years, and most of them were not black, so with his light skin and light women, it led to people thinking he's a mulatto, or he's Puerto Rican, or he's Italian.

THE TRUTH IS THAT PEOPLE REALLY FEEL KINDA ALIENATED NOW PRINCE IS DOING ALOT OF FUNK, JAZZ (TRADITIONALLY BLACK MUSIC) AND THEY DON'T LIKE MUSICOLOGY COS IT'S NOT ROCK ENOUGH lol
PRINCE IS BLACK AND WOULD EVENTUALLY HAVE PLAYED BLACK MUSIC ALONG WITH THE ROCK & POP WHETHER Y'ALL LIKED IT OR NOT.

IF I CAN GET IN2 QUEEN and guns n' roses, Y'ALL CAN GET IN MUSICOLOGY AND FUNK pimp2

can't we all just get along biggrin
