..Yeah, that AMA performance tops my list--you can see Cyndi Lauper in the first row cheering him on when he kicks that stand--but I also dig the "demo" version that Wendy and Lisa are working on in "Purple Rain", and the way Prince plays it on piano in the film, too.

Boy, there's some real fans here. I agree with every version mentioned... AMAs '85, Lovesexy Dortmund (albeit abbreviated), Purple Rain Syracuse, all are definitive in their own way. The original performance from First Avenue (obviously) had a great raw quality, but I'm glad he edited the solo 'cause it meandered.
I wonder sometimes if he wished he played something other than that two-note motif through most of the solo, because he's had to quote it every night for twenty years...

a kick-ass, from the heart, performance letting rip with a SEARING guitar solo on the white cloud that ive yet 2 hear him better live. Then, just 4 added good-measure he goes all rock n roll and kicks the fuck outta the mic stand cuz it's in his way. Just an AWESOME performance at the height of Purple Rain 'fever'. I cant fault it. [This message was edited Thu Mar 25 14:51:31 2004 by bananacologne] I agreed! That performance was EXCELLENT! "Welcome 2 The Dawn!"
