HEY! OVER HERE

Ok, ive seen a lot of people talk about how the man has lost his touch and yada yada. Im not here to talk about that per se, as i am posing a question. Dont you find it odd that not only is prince not makin mind blowing music as of late, but NO one is. Isnt that strange? Think really carefully and try to think of a mind blowing album in the 5 years. I think THAT is the strangest of all. There ARE no new torch carriers. Its as if inspiration has packed up and left. I hope one of you can offer some solace. sad

Perhaps we as a human race are desensitized.
Read the papers, watch the news. I don't but taking in that crap on a daily basis would do anyone in.

Well im not really thinkin about desensitization as much as insane chord changes. It just seems as if were at a cliff in humanity, where nowhere else to go.

musically, a lot of it has to do with major labels not nurturing artists like they did in the past.

so you're a musician... anything online?

There is a few REALLY good quality albums that I have bought in the last year that ARE mind blowing (in my standards) but neither the artist just haven't gotten the commercial sucess that I thought they would have initially. The albums are: The Headphone Masterpiece by Cody ChesnuTT; and The Way I Feel by Remy Shand. They both get their fair share of play time and although they are very different, they mesh well with my Prince collection! smile
Strange, but I'm more comfortable around you naked.

Want mindblowing?

Pick up "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots" or "The Soft Bulletin" by the Flaming Lips. Or get Zwan's CD.

Ya just gotta know where to look...

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

What are you retarded@*?/?***

"Hey, over here" - Wow, my curiosity was peaked and a short time later went all limp.

There's no good music? Anywhere?
You're lazy. Get outta the house, check your local scene, listen to Radiohead, read a book, give up, i don't know what else to say to that.

vdubblin im speaking of new artists who have brought out somthing completely new in songwriting. I dont see any, dont start askin if im retarded, my music collection im SURE dwarfs yours in terms of expansiveness. Lets not get rude. Also i DIDNT say there was no good music, i said there are no new mind blowing acts. Also this is a thread based on opinions. I want yours, not your judgement of the thread.

Then with that same rationale in mind you can't judge my collection in as you say, expansiveness, you might be suprised. And you're right, didn't mean to be mean, you're obviously articulate. The question you're asking is very broad though. I could point you in some right directions but it's all too subjective to begin with. I hope you find something that warms your cockles, and by cockles I mean your pants. I'm just funnin' with ya...

Oh, and new artists that are truly innovative in songwriting or otherwise aren't signing with major labels just as major labels aren't signing any innovative talent...for the most part.

I think that the influx of real talent into the market ebbs and flows roughly every 10 years or so. At that point there are a handful of really good bands/artists around...

...I do believe that the mediocre has become the majority due to major labels not nurturing true talent and going instead with the "pop idols", etc. Most people these days are unfortunately less likely to actually listen for a decent period of time other than the 3-minute pop song, which is sad considering the wealth of amazing music that has occured within the realms outside the 3-minute format in the last century. Pop music has turned into advertising...short little tasters of music to satisfy the increasingly short-attentions spans which are being marketed and refined into smaller and smaller bite-size pieces every day by the American pop machine.

It's sickening and I really hope Prince's new album is all its cracked up to be, cause there's definitely a lot of crap out there which is killing real art.

On behalf of vdubblin, i suppose i should specify a bit more. It seems to me that labels arent neccessarily NOT dealing with innovators, but simply dont really see any. There is a good and evil side to labels, that good side being that they DO shield a lot of us from the absolute crap that they have to suffer through. I think the reason we havent seen a new JB, Prince, Sly, whatever, is because there ARENT any. Hip hop as of late has been the only thing that really gets people to dancing. However, the message in the really popular dancable stuff, isnt that great (ill let you go through em in ure head).
I am speaking of mainstream, whats on the radio stuff. That is the music that the masses get access to. James brown, sly, prince, rufus, chaka, on and on were ALL on the radio quite heavy. James, by the late 90's had more hits than anyone save, Elvis. So it goes to show that just about everyone MAINSTREAM is simply going for the 3 minute bamboozle ONLY and not really heavy in message. Attention spans are smaller, radio is gettin more expensive, and talent of instrument is becoming rare. So this is suppose is my reason for the post in the first place. Take abstract art and take a contemporary of the impressionist age, i know art is subjective but in simple terms of skill.....ya know.
Vdub i appreciate your perspective.

P.S. This is STILL about NEW artists.

Another problem I find is the moment a label does "discover" even the slightest trace of discernable talent two weeks later here comes the video, the album, follow up, greatest hits package. It's like Pro Ball signing a six year old to play and shoving them out onto the court. Sure, they're good for six but are they that good? Yet?

"It seems to me that labels arent neccessarily NOT dealing with innovators, but simply dont really see any."
I disagree and will sound like a cliche (at this point) but it's business not music these days. I'd go as far as to say labels never really know what's good around them. Innovation isn't a priority and neither is art. Thankfully you still have smaller indie lables fighting the good fight but clearly it's up to the listener playing hide and seek. Enter the net (or Inter the Net - dude, that's pretty clever, say i must) and just in time.

I shred on bass way better than that dude in the Red Elvises with his three string monstrosity but nobody wants to expose themselves to my overwhelming, hemorrhagingly(sp?) entertaining band, The Snowglobes but whatever.

I think in the very near future we'll be seeing true musicianship in the form of an eighty seven year old named Becky from Tuscon kicking shit around with major skills and the contrast will be so beautifully disturbing MTV won't have a choice but to play her. I might've derailed back there someplace.

Try Converter. Even if you wouldn't find it mind-blowing, you would at the very least find it ear-blowing.
