zootjames said: I was thinking it was Around the World in a Day, or maybe Purple Rain, which is when he started with the cloud. As I recall, the Hohner was basically a memory by Sign o' the Times, which is when you pretty much saw him with the peach cloud exclusively. I'm pretty sure the PR album was recorded on the Hohner, and the cloud only came after on the tour, the movie. And live during this era he only used it for the solo on Purple Rain. Temptation on ATWIAD does sound pretty cloudish indeed. As for SOTT, on the title track and housequake, that's got to be the Hohner. But there's also quite some cloud over the album as well. [quote] What I DO like from the early period is what he was playing on the pre-Controversy albums, like his second album. The leads on "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" and "Bambi" are slammin'! That tone had BODY. What was that, a Les? Didn't he do "I Wanna Be Your Lover" on American Bandstand, with a white Les or Les-based axe? Wasn't that a Les Paul junior? | |

You've got me there, because I didn't see Prince tour until Lovesexy. But I think you're right. Temptation on ATWIAD does sound pretty cloudish indeed.
As does Paisley Park. As for SOTT, on the title track and housequake, that's got to be the Hohner. But there's also quite some cloud over the album as well.
Yeah, the title track does sound like the Hohner. I've actually come to like that bluesy, mildly overdriven sound...but I never gave any thought to what axe he was using. It's actually kind of disappointing to hear him play that on the cloud in concert (a la the SOTT movie). I wonder if that's the Hohner playing rhythm on La La La, He He Hee? I've always loved that lick; in fact, I've used that lick on gigs. Then there's that thick, clean lead on the solo in the long version of Housequake. Sounds like a "none of the above," like a jazz guitar. One of Miko's guitars, perhaps? The leads on "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" and "Bambi" are slammin'! That tone had BODY. What was that, a Les? Didn't he do "I Wanna Be Your Lover" on American Bandstand, with a white Les or Les-based axe?
Wasn't that a Les Paul junior? Could be, as it did look kinda smallish. But I'm not really up on my LPs. I usually reserve axe talk for the guitar "gods" like Vai, Satriani, and Eddie Van Halen. I'm glad I've finally been convinced, through this forum, to look into what made the sounds of one of my all-time favorite, yet underrated, guitarists...
