Alicia Keys paid mad respect to Prince: full transcript!

Alicia Keys on Prince:
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
March 15, 2004
Waldorf Astoria, NYC

“There are many kings, King Henry VIII, King Solomon, King Tut, King James, King Kong, The Three Kings, but there is only one Prince. Only one man who has defied restriction, who's defied the obvious in all the rules to the game. A mysterious figure, who in a river of words will not suffice, can only be identified by a symbol. Who's music is like an internal roller coaster that takes each individual on their own separate legendary ride and still takes listen after listen to discover and uncover even half of the story behind the intriguing and unapologetically addictive beat of music. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, there is only one Prince.
There is only one man who is so loud he makes you soft, so strong he makes you weak, so honest you feel kind of bashful, so bold he defies you to be subtle and so super bad he makes you feel so super good. He is the only man that I’ve ever seen that lights the stage on fire leaving you to burn within it in a frenzy of movement, lights, electric guitars, slides, pianos, dances, voices, splits and songs, oh my god, songs so powerful that you are forever changed. Songs that make you laugh and cry, think and dance. Songs that made me look at song writing as stories that are untold passions dying to be heard.
He is the inspiration that generations will return to until the end of time. So yes ladies and gentlemen, throughout history there have been many, many kings both real and mythological; they have borne sons, but none of them can touch the rays from this man who stands alone. A man that I am tremendously proud and honored to help induct into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame tonight, because now, it is forever changed. Ladies and Gentlemen, I want you to get on your feet and I want you to pay homage to the one and only Prince.”

And sorry HandClapasfingassnaps if this was already posted, but I didn't feel like taking 10 minutes to wait for the Search Engine to run, nor did I feel like taking 10 minutes to peruse through all of the recent posts, nor do I expect my psot to be censored by your ass becasue it's a double post...But Alicia Keys' speech was so on point, and so cleverly written, i figured y'all would appreciate it in its entirety.

Exactly my point. I mean how much further could Alicia have gone to say she wants to do Prince love without actually grabbing him and doing him on stage! Or do you think Alicia just wanted to come across that heavy cause it was Prince's moment and she wanted it to seem like she and every other female still want to get with the brotha.

i actually didn't like her speech at all. it wasn't insightful and it didn't really demonstrate a real intimacy, or knowledge of his music. don't get me wrong, they were great things that she was saying, and when it comes to prince it is impossible to exaggerate, but it was all such generalities. and it was weird to wach because she seemed totally high, out of her mind, and giggled like a stoner.

and her 'analogy' was horrible, although we do get the point, and it is moving to hear it...'there is only one prince'. but really- if there can be king tut, king solomon etc then there is really more than one prince too, prince charles, etc...

and although bruce springsteen's induction speech has some weird moments, that thing was totally legit, and well thought out, had some homor, and was anything but generalites..

so i would have liked to see prince get a more intelligent intro. he deserved that at least. outkast was fine and cool. you could see their love. but just think about it, how much could you say given even just 3 minutes.....

just thinkin that with all my love over the past 20+ years, i could have said a thing or two. feel me?

There wasn't shit wrong with the speech. She told it like it was and she did it in her style. Would it have been better if talentless ass Britney Spears
would've done it! Prince specifically asked for Alicia to induct him and for a young artist I think he made a great pick. I tell you I don't care what you do people are always gonna have something negative to say. Outkast was even good, what is a n*** suppose to say, how are they suppose to act!

Do u have brain damage?

I have no problem with the speech, more the way she expressed it (read my above comment) and she aint THAT great an artist, Outkast on the other hand fresh and pushing the hip-hop envelope.\

All IMHO of course smile

If Prince weren't married and was still his playboy self of 82-89, Alicia would either be knocked with his child( bless the one who has passed sad ) or or he would have run through her and moved on to Hilary Duff lol razz. Just a joke, she is way too cute wink. All kidding aside, she was simply beautiful and sincere with her words. yes omg woot!. And she is fine too and her music pays homage to all the classic soul artist.

Alright LittlePill, then bust out your "better" speech. I will eagerly await, and for that matter, I challenge anyone to write a deeper, more sincere speech about Prince. I personally thought it was fantastic. More than the speech, I love her delivery . On point. Alicia. Inducting Prince with such charisma and attitude. mmmppphhh kisses

I agree with you Phunk 100%, but as you see the rest of the tread, I tell people post the stupidist shit. Most of the stuff on here didn't have nothin to do with the topic you posted. As far as Alicia not being that great an artist, it don't make no difference because Prince still chose her and Outkast and they still inducted him whether you liked it or not. So there. razz

Wasn't nothing 'wrong with the way she expressed it and maybe you need to get brain surgery if it's damaged. It sounds like it by your comment.

Romance1600, you sound foolish. Maybe you should learn a little about Alicia Key's befoer you put her down. Just because you ay not have been able to articulate what Alicia did so precisely does not mean she did not write it. For your information, Alicia Keys was accepted to Columbia University....at the age of 16! That's right, she got accepted to an Ivy League School when most of us were still in high school. And you know what happened next? She dropped out after 4 weeks to record music. So next time do yourself a favor and think before you speak.

TurnItUp

Like I said before I agree with you Dr. Phunk. After I seen the RRHOF, I am glad that both Alicia and Outkast inducted him. Really I am just glad that Prince was inducted on his first nomination I hear. I guess people would've rather had seen older artist such as Chaka Khan or Lenny Kravitz who was in the audience which is fine. But for young artist, I will say that Alicia Keys and Outkast inducting P made more sense and was much more impressive than Michael Jackson's in 2001 when N'Sync inducted him and MJ's speech got cut short because they put the music on while he was talking (ha ha), at least that didn't happen to our man. It don't make no difference what you say, she paid MAD respect. Thanks Alicia Keys biggrin
