Guitar-heads give P a thumbs-up for "... Weeps" solo.

Much discussion (too much?) has gone into Prince's solo on George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" at the Rock Hall of Fame ceremonies. One of the sticking points on the Org has been whether detractors were being too technical, from the standpoint from guitarists.

Well, I was checking out another music board, the Fender Forum (I've been untrue ... cry Please forgive me), and was surprised to find a "Clapton vs. Prince" thread on that solo. (It's EVERYWHERE!) A few potshots at our boy, but a supportive thread, by and large.

That's an interesting thread. Quite a few "Prince rocked", quite a few "very good but he went a bit over the top" and a bit of discussion about Prince's overall muscial ability.

Thanks for the link. smile

I showed the performance to a fellow I work with and he plays also "in his spare time" but is a real musician though.

In seeing the vid he added that "P" did add some of his own style but in sort it blew him away.

As so was I.

I love the solo so much. I've watched it several times, and it never ceases to blow me away. The morning after the ceremony, I got a call from one of my friends. His first words were "ya know, I thought I was a good guitar player".
Now this friend of mine is a big blues/rock guitar head, and he gushed about Prince's solo for about five minutes. He understood everything that went on upon that stage. He noticed Prince making eye contact with Petty to get an indication of whether to wrap it up or keep going. Petty definitely gave him the go-ahead to rip into it. Now, you don't tell someone like PRINCE to go for it, and not expect him to get frickin' LOOSE. I don't think the solo was over the line at all. I thought that (1) It was in the spirit of the occasion. They're at the RRHOF, this is the place and time to show everyone why you're being inducted and why you're still relevant. (2) I thought it was a wonderful and fitting tribute to the late George Harrison. Prince has expressed his admiration and respect for him in the past. George would have loved it.(3) It was obvious that Prince simply loves to play. You could see it in his face. He was having a ball up there. Seeing him do his thing up there with Petty, Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood (who was playing keys) reminded why I love playing for people and why I want to make a living as a musician. It was all very inspiring.

Fans on Petty's site dug it too. But if (some) people on this site think Prince fanatics are bad, they should see/hear some Clapton fanboys over the years. Damn. disbelief
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Good post...I was over on the VH-1 site, checking for a re-broadcast date (there isn't one), and several folks over there had discussion threads about Prince's solo. Some folks saw "arrogance" in Prince's immediate departure from the stage, but by and large, all they could do was rave about his skills. Prince dropped jaws from coast to coast.

It was a masterstroke. Absolutely, blindingly brilliant. For him to whip that out in front of Petty, Lynne, Winwood, Jagger, Richards, Springsteen, Mellancamp, Seger and ZZ in the room...he really furthered his legend with that solo.

That's why it's important for Prince to show his guitar skills on this tour. His performance at the Hall of Fame helped him sell a lot of ticket. I saw a post from a dude in a Beatles newsgroup who is buying a ticket to see Prince for the first time since he saw him on the Purple Rain tour! Guitar heads are buying tickets to see him play, not shake his ass....
