madhouse and N.E.W.S.

before I was quite dissapointed with the NEWS relaease, didn't even bother try to get in in stores. i borrowed it at the library, but now I think my minds changing.. listening to NEWS now reminds me of madhouse recordings, not that it is totally similar, but a non-vocal album, experimental and free. think of the stuff that prince released at the very years of the madhouse releases in 86-87. i believe it is a very positive thing that prince has let himself follow a belief and just play and release an album with jams on it. who wants to actually put on a madhouse cd and enjoy the sound of it alot... not many i guess. i could be wrong though, but for me the music of such releases is not the thing. the thing is the releases that come during periods of creativity and experiments. and for one thing, NEWS is experimental - no say that I like it that much. maybe we got some great great prince years ahead of us. thoughts ?

S.N.O.O.Z.E. is to Madhouse, what dog shit is to diamonds.

i'm definitely feeling u benjamin. i've got N.E.W.S. on right now and i too have new appreciation for it. it's quite different from madhouse and xpectation. there is more structure and discipline, which is a strange thing to say since it does sound so free. so i'll just say it jams.
over the yaers, i've found that the best thing to do with prince is just let him call the shots. what he does and the things he chooses to release may not always seem like the right thing at the time, but he knows what he wants to do. in retrospect, his most recent string of projects: rainbow children, xpectation, c-note, N.E.W.S. are truly wonderful in ways i could never have imagined. i am very excited about the future. if i weren't, i wouldn't bother with prince.

I love the Madhouse recordings, C-Note, and Xpectation but I find NEWS to be largely a boring endless wank. It has some great parts but as a whole it doesn't work.

IMHO the reason it doesn't work is that it has no melodys in it. There is nothing to hold on to, to keep your interest.

Now see there you go. I have been wondering why people have been hating on N.E.W.S so hard as though they were unaware of the Madhouse recordings. I love N.E.W.S and have since I bought it. I guess I just connected with the music. I love the fact that it is experimental and just overall jams west in particular. I am also happy you were able to be disappointed at first and then let yourself come back around and hear it later. I have told many people to do that and they would be feeling differently at a later time, but so many people want to hate Prince that you can't talk to them.
Peace
