What should I expect from Purple Rain?

Hi, my name is Nick, I'm 22, and I've been a Prince fan for 12 years. This isn't easy for me to say, so bear with me. I have never seen Purple Rain.

I'm waiting for the special 20th anniversary + bonus outtakes version wink but I'd like a little idea of what I can expect.

Don't give too much away, just give me a feel for what the movie is like. It looks extremely cheap and badly made from the small clips I've seen, is this the case?

What is the acting like? Again, I expect it to be quite awful, so is this the case? Maybe this is why I've been put off getting it for so long, simply because everything about it seems so cheesy and poorly done, except for the music of course. And is that what it all comes down to?

Is it just the music I watch it for or is it actually a halfway decent movie too?

Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated, thank you. pray

A decent movie, with adequate acting (by non-actors), great performances, laughable love-scenes and show-stealing comic-relief from Morris Day.

Got to be one of the best rockstar-to-actor movies ever, and kinda started the whole movie/music tie-in we see with every big release today.

A true classic and a reminder of a time when pop music didn't just mean manufactured pap and homogeneity.

There is no storyline so there is no danger of that lol

You should remember that this is the film that made Prince a superstar-- it may be hard to believe from some of the other things you have seen, but under the guidance of another director (other than Prince), Prince gives a great performance in the film, one that had people really paying attention. Some of the acting is on the bad side (Appolonia, for instance), but not enough to get on your nerves. Jill Jones gives a moving performance, and Wendy and Lisa are also very good in smaller (off-stage) roles. But the other performance to watch for is Morris Day-- he also got a lot of attention from his performance in the film. There is also an excellent performance from the always compelling Clarence Williams III as Prince's dad.

In summary, the film is rich with songs and drama, and is definitely not a disappointment.

Purple Rain is very much a film of it's era. The fashions, the dancing (watch out for the breakdancing policemen lol). When I first saw it I remember it as being pretty intense emotionally. But it's all about the music ultimately esp. "I want to be a modernaire, modernaire, modernaire". For a movie there's a lot of music in it - and thank goodness for that!

What? I've never seen it. I'm waiting for the remastered version. Don't ask me why I've never seen it. I've been a fan since I got a tape of D&P from my aunt who was working at WBs. I'd heard SOTT and Purple Pain before that and like them too when I was young, but I wasn't really a fan.

the opening scene is priceless - especially where prince plays the piano in an out of the ordinary kind of way (you will see what i am talking about). the performance scenes and the incidental music are incredible. silly movie at times - mostly due to the datedness of it and bad acting, but you will like it.

Its a very very well shot and edited, creatively colorful (we're talking about yellow light pouring in windows, walking in your lingerie in downtown...), passionate film that Spike Lee actually paid homage too in a love scene in Do the Right Thing....

its also suprisingly gritty and harsh for people who have no idea what to expect, I mean, the Kid does have a few unsympathetic moments...

Its cohesive and poetic, melodramatic, and above all....

entertaining.

very "new wave" too.... (aside from the expected rock and funk)
