Chaos and Disorder Appreciation Thread

since we are on a guitar Prince vibe today, show your love for Chaos and Disorder - the first Prince album i immediately fell in love with!

here's what AMG said about it:

Like Come before it, Chaos & Disorder is a contractual obligation album for Prince, a way to get himself out of his contract with Warner Brothers. Unlike Come, Chaos & Disorder doesn't sound disjointed and pasted together -- it's a fun, off-handed throwaway. For the first time since 1987's Sign O' the Times, Prince has made a pop/rock album, complete with squealing guitars and sighing melodies. None of the songs qualify as major songs in Prince's canon, but that's part of the record's charm -- Prince sounds like he's having a good time, and he could really care less what anyone else has to say. Or, as he puts it in one of the album's best and most careening tracks, "I Rock, Therefore I Am." Chaos & Disorder sounds immediate, like the songs were recorded the same day they were written. While that might mean there's a handful of throwaways scattered throughout the album, there are wonderful moments like the stuttering jazz-funk of "Dig U Better Dead," the scathing "Had U," the pscyhedelic clashes of the title track, the heavy rock of "I Like It There" and the beautiful "Dinner with Delores," a rough gem that ranks as one of Prince's simplest and most charming singles of the '90s. So, Chaos & Disorder isn't Prince's best or most important work, but it is a really fun listen, especially if you're willing to accept it as what it is -- a record that does nothing more than rock. -- Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Dear Milty

There was an appreciation thread about Chaos And Disorder recently, but seeing as how this thread is by you, I'll join in and say that I appreciate the title track and The Same December the most.

I liked the original version of Zannalee better than the version that was released on this album, though.

Sincerely
Scifi biggrin

Dear Scifi,

Than you very much for pointing out my error. i admit i should have checked and that i obviously did not adhere to Dansa's sticky. Also, Scifi, thank you for joining in on my appreciation for my second favourite Prince album of the 90s.
I also like the tracks you mentioned. Right now i am listening to I Rock, Therefore I Am. i like the guitar solo on that on.

Your support is greatly...err...appreciated.

Sincerely,
Milty

chaos and disorder-great rock track but with very weak guitar solo-prince's worst ever

i like it there-one of the best rock songs by prince ever-again weak guitar solo

dinner with delores-very nice melody, very bad lyrics, nice guitar playing

same december-it reminds me on dirty mind with it's urgency

then that country song

into the light -mediocrite

i will-great guitar playing great track

i rock and dig you better dead are awful songs

had u-intersting track

this album is loaded with distorted songs but it doesn't rock so good.purple rain is his most commercial album but computer blue is 10 times more rocking then any of his songs on chaos.
if you want to hear the best prince peformance on guitar ever-listen to rock night from 2002 celebration.
version of bambi from that night(contains all the lyrics including maybe you need to bleed part)
kills chaos and disorder.

Agree with most of what you said:

1) the best part of "I Like It There" is the GONG! @ the end

2) "Same December" is best for it's tempo changes

3) "Dinner w/ Delores": a good melody is WASTED on stupid lyrics

4) "Zanalee" is cool

5) rest of the tracks thereafter are SHIT. They are SHIT. SHIT.Stop fooling yourself, my friend!

If you appreciate "Chaos and Disorder", you appreciate a great artist ripping you off with sub-par minimal requirements. "C&D" was an insult to ANYONE who plunked down hard-earned $$$ in good faith, only to get a self-centered, intentionally mediocore f-you to a label, by a millionare, to a multi-million corporation.

"C&D" would only have been acceptable if it were loaded with another 7-10 tracks. "C&D" is not anything Prince should ever be proud of!

My opinion!

I doubt that he is. After all, it really was just a compilation of tracks not intended for release - as it said in the cover - more like contract-filler, so's he could get out of his deal with WB.

I'm sure Chaos And Disorder was a better album when he initially put it together in '94. Certainly the early version included Empty Room and the better version of Zannalee.

I assume the content of the released version of the album has something to do with Prince not wanting to give his then-enemy Warner Brothers something of actual value.

Unfortunately, the real losers in that battle was the fans, who got an album that wasn't quite as good as it could have been, but I think Prince expected - or hoped for - his fans to understand and bear with it.

BANG ON, my brother!

Additionally, it helped tarnish the reputation he has never been able to restore to this day. And anyone who felt burned by buying it, will think twice before taking another Prince cd to the register.

Stupid, stupid move. Should have released an album with INTEGRITY. mexican

Some fans celebrate his SHIT, instead of coming to terms with exactly what it is. mexican

i think the album has more integrity than a lot of things out there. without that album we would not have the free Prince we have now. Free to do what he pleases which is what a true artist should.
i think the songs are great and they represent a point in his life that was filled with a lot of confusion and anger.

i also think that Dinner with Delores is one of the best singles he ever came up with. the lyrics are outstanding in my opinion. it's a funny story kind of like Raspberry Beret.

I still contend that Dinner w/Delores was the last good single from a Prince album!
