That guitar solo was phenomenal and one of the best I have ever seen! On the other end of that there was no reason to upstage anyone and walk off the stage like that. That was all about George Harrison and it's called "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" not "While my guitar playing skills kick you in the ass at 100MPH" and why walk off stage like that? Still an unreal solo.

I was really nervous about this guitar solo. Just couldn't reconcile the George Harrison vibe with Prince, but OH MY!!!! I have GOT to hear that many more times just to take it all in.

Let us forever put to rest any doubt that Prince is a guitarist worthy of his props.

I loved the performance. I am SO HAPPY for Prince. What a wonderful honor. I am glad when people are honored while they are still alive.

nod

Prince SMMMOKED "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"...the guy was absofreakinlutely on fire EVERYTIME he was onstage. Seems to me that his performances were the most ROCK and ROLL of anyone else there that night, but I've only seen about an hour and a half so far. Dansa, you NEED to see this. It's very necessary.

That is classic Prince, it's part of the reason why some people hate him, it's part of the reason why some people love him, lol.

I thought the whole performance was absolutley perfect:

1. He looked cool as hell
2. Played a Rock song, but with a twist
3. Played a cool song with a message
4. Played an old school style funk song
5. Played guitar, sang the shit out of the songs and danced

To me that performance represents Prince at his best! And the last guitar solo will finally explain to everyone as to why I'm addicted to his music!

You know, my initial reaction to the walk off was negative but it has since turned into something else. Something courteous. We all know that he really is not wanting to steal any credit away from anyone else. It does come naturally that he shines brighter than most, if not all, musicians, but I do not think he wanted it there.

He went so far above and beyond with that solo, my guess is that he was maybe, just maybe he was spent and a little bit embarrassed, so, he decided just to go. He was so in to it maybe he did not want to take the focus off of George. They obviously asked him to do it, he was certainly into it, but I do not think he wanted to steal it.

Trust me, the rest of the world did not notice that Prince walked off the stage. The rest of the world was probably amazed with the solo and then went right back to being amazed on how much Dahni looks like his dad.

So, I retract my initial negative reaction to the theatrics. The leaning back on that guy and playing to the young Mr. Harrison and the abrupt departure from the stage were both, most likely, out of respect.

That’s my .02

Peace

Alicia and Outkast's intro wasn't that bad, really.

Kid Rock's intro for Bob Seger was AWFUL - he had notes written on crumpled paper and got them mixed up.

Bruce Springsteen sounded like a boy in love inducting Jackson Browne. All he kept talking about was how good-looking Jackson Browne was.

Keith Richards' intro for ZZ Top sounded like he was randomly picked to do it, and all he wanted to talk about was his own longevity and sexual encounters.

Looking back, now that it's over, Prince got one of the best intros of the night. His was either the best, or tied with George Harrison.

come on now... I think he did a really good job laying off to the side and not getting in the way even though he must have been itching to do so, lol.. Then what's funny is that George Harrison's son seemed to KNOW Prince was about to lay it down, didn't he? Wonder if the walkthrough or rehearsal(?) put everyone on notice beforehand... Walking off the stage like that...uhh.. isn't this a Rock n Roll party? What great guitarist DOESN't give attitude?? Prince just does it a lil' mo' funky than anyone else...and he knows it, lol.

wasn't it great to see him have fun like that?? music it was like he couldn't help himself

July

During a commercial break Dhani, George Harrison's son was asking where was Prince.
He wanted to give him a hug.

Prince was touched and obviously had respect for George Harrison and was well aware of the fact that Dhani Harrison had lost his father. Prince played with abandon and with a lot of emotion.

That was the the most powerful moment of the night. Good for you.
It was perfect and message sent and received. thumbs up! guitar

I don't think Andre's intro was that bad. What he conveyed was that musicians "back in those days" actually played instruments, had polished dance moves and interesting personalities, something that is clearly lacking today with the standard issue basketball jerseys, medallions, and tracks that take 8 producers to come up with a beat and a synth line. This concept is something that has rubbed off at least a little on Outkast, whatever your opinions of them may be.

Actually, I thought it was well done by all three but I think its interesting that Outkast gets criticized for not "speaking correctly" and being "ghetto and street" but Alicia was high, very high. I think they were two young men FROM the streets expressing themselves. I was more ticked off with Alicia being high.

After watching that, it showed me that Prince is still the greatest musician of our generation. The performance was awesome, the speech was awesome, everything was just awesome. biggrin

In pro sports, there are only a handful of guys that go into the Hall of Fame on the 1st ballot. Prince goes in as a 1st-ballot HOFer. It was encouraging to me that, despite his waning visibility and chart presence for the better part of 15 years, the rock community has recxognized and appreciated his talent.

The performances, particularly the "SOTT" performance, were all outstanding. The induction speeches, and Prince's speech, were very good as well.

Just watching the montages took me back. For all of our criticizing (myself included), it is astounding what he has accomplished for the balance of his career.

Congrats to Prince. I don't say this on the org that often, but he is truly an inspiration.

thumbs up!

That was a great opening sequence!!!

But who the hell asked OutKast to "induct" him:???

That was so embarassing.... they came across like uneducated thugs.... If Big Boi is so inspired by Prince, can't he think of something a little more profound to say other than "he used the F-word" in Erotic City?

That was really class-less.

At least Alicia Keys is giving a well-written, poetic speech .

PS I STILL don't get the Outkast as the new Prince thing. This just proves to me they are cheap, crass, imitators.

I just posted about this in a thread about Lenny K. Should've saved my thought for this thread. But, GaryMF you got it covered! thumbs up! My feelings exactly!
