why some fans think prince music was funkier in the 1980's? to me rainbow children album is one of his funkiest ever.
his live one nite alone shows had much more funk than ever before especialy that 1+1+1=3 /rolleceoster/sex machine medley. bass is much funkier now than it was b4. on many of his records before you almost didn't have real bass or it was doubled with synth. so what was funkier before?

You can't define the FUNK .....
It's bigger than the music ..... In the 80's Prince sure was funky, nowadays he's trying too hard to be funky

@ Scifinerd.
-- Stuff like The Work and Musicology - I guess they are funky, but how tedious they are compared to some of his older funk tunes. Even the throwaway ones in yester-year were more enjoyable IMO to The Work and Musicology. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm a sucker for a major chord

I'd rather bump "Oliver's House" than "Musicology" any day.

there seems to be a confusion between people saying funky as in good funk music and people saying funky as in upbeat or just rythmic (sp)!
i think generally people dont care whether prince was funkier in the 80s or not, they just prefer the music from the 80s so therefore it feels funkier to them

Actually he released very little straight funk music between 82-90. Just a few cuts, the more genuine funk compositions were left in the vaults.

1 + 1 + 1 Is 3 is derivative of Erotic City
DMSR is derivative of Let's Work and International Lover is derivative of Do me, baby so who cares? Prince copies himself less than most major rock stars so I don't mind if he does it now and again. "New Power slide...."

thebanishedone said: 'why some fans think prince music was funkier in the 1980's?'
Because in the 1980's he had his own original new "Funk" sound... Listen for example to the funky guitar in "The Dance Electric", that sound was and still is unique to Prince, hell any funky guitar stuff he did in the 1980's can't even be compared to the standard "Funk" stuff he does now... Back then he took "Funk" to a whole new level and just tore it up like no other and he had a band that participated and helped him in making that new "Funk" sound to boot... Nowadays he and his band sound like a James Brown/Sly Stone/Tower Of Power cover band, no originality unlike then cos everything "Funky" Prince does now has already been done better in the 1970's... It's like he's not Prince anymore but just some 1970's Funk/Soul artist impersonator, his band nowadays only plays the usual, standard 1970's warm "Funk" that everyone played back then... Prince was the master of stonecold "Electric Funk" and it's too bad he abandoned that sound cos he made some of the most killer songs/jams in the history of modern music with that sound that brought "Funk" to a whole new level... The issue isn't whether the 80's work was funkier (even though I say yes). Prince has made a lot of funky music since the 80's, sadly, much of it is overlooked due to the debacle of the 90's and the inconsistent output in the 00's. But to many, the later work doesn't seem as affecting, original, or daring as the 80's material. But that decision is in the ear of the beholder.

I like Days Of Wild, but I have to disagree. It don't come anywhere near Head, Let's Pretend We're Married, All The Critics Love U In New York or Bob George, to name but a few. [This message was edited Fri Mar 12 19:41:07 2004 by scififilmnerd] FREE THE 29 MAY 1993 COME CONFIGURATION!

Dude was talking about "The Rainbow Children", "One Nite Alone" and his current live band... I agree that the 1993/1994/1995 live versions of "Days O' Wild" were extremely funky, it's one of my favorite songs he did in the 1990's (I love the studio version, but that isn't "Funk"), and he had a band who could play some serious traditional "Funk" with some Hip-Hop influences, but still give me any Camille-style "Electric Funk" over anything he's done in the 1990's, to me that sounds fresher and more timeless than anything since then...
