never been to an aftershow, what should i expect ?

if i do get to attend one of these things this time around, you guys would be the ones to let me know what to expect, let me in on some of your experiences, i know its gotta be a great time, but, what are some highlights you can share with me about the times you have been to them, is it packed full of people ? is the music different than the concert, or pretty much the same vibe as the show he just put on ? does he interact with the audience more than the show ? i wanna know alllll the dirt nod and, does anyone know if he will be doing aftershows this time around ?

lol Hell Yeah they are Different! Usually at a concert he has a certain Pattern or Set of Songs he Performs. At an Aftershow he can be more IMPROMPTU with the songlist. I like his Aftershows so much More in a way because I have seen him get Wilder and well he performs like a Vampire ya know late night. I love all his Sexual Energy and Excitement Onstage..I like when he has no Time limit . You should Expect to Experience one of the Best Damn Live shows ya ever will see from a Brilliant Musician. To me Everything is Worth it cause he's so Fun and Full of Energy and Spunk. You will Have alot of Fun! biggrin

They're fun, but not much different than regular shows (minus the production elements). When he first started doing them, around '86 or '87, the band played on rented gear and there was no set list... the musicians didn't even know what would be played. Mostly loose, very loose, jams and half-remembered covers... Prince would call out tunes or key signatures or start playing a riff that everybody just picked up on. Eventually they evolved into separate concerts with their own set lists and the material was obviously well-rehearsed. New tunes, tunes that haven't been released, etc. Now you'll hear a little bit of everything: songs from the regular set, covers, fan-oriented obscurities, surprise guests, even hits. At HoB L.A. a few weeks ago he even played "Purple Rain." That would have been unheard of not too long ago.

Expect nothing. He'll play whatever he's in the mood to play.

In my experience, you can expect waiting for literally hours out on the street waiting to get in, then waiting literally hours standing around while roadies set up the equipment on stage. If you get in line terribly early, you might get within a few metres of the stage and Prince Do not go to the bathroom or go get a drink and expect your place to be waiting for you. As the club fills behind you to capacity and beyond, you will get pushed a lot.

As for the performance, it is a lot looser and more relaxed. The sound quality can be pretty bad with lots of feedback and too much bass - your ears will be ringing after. Prince may perform anything from his repertoir, you just don't know what to expect. But it is overall a wonderful experience, not to be missed, it is so much more intimate and unique than a concert gig, probably one of the best nights you'll ever have, if you can keep the pace...Expect Prince to go on stage very late, around 2am and come off upto 4.30am. If you have to go to a job the next day you are gonna be dead all day!

Oh, and be advised, there's a difference between afterparty and aftershow. An afterparty may well be just a disco set up for the fans where Prince and his band members may or may not swing by, but no performance, whereas an aftershow is usually a performance.

I don't know whether Prince will do aftershows this tour - I suspect not, he has been criticised in the past for cutting a proper gig short so that he will be fresh for the aftershow, he may want to give his all this time around.

I think maybe the tour after this one will be more for the hardcore fans again with aftershows.

I think the main reason it's unlikely there will be aftershows is the venues for this tour are 15,000+ seat arenas. It just isn't feasible to try and have an aftershow at any reasonably sized club with an audience pool of that size.

I'm one of the lucky people who was fortunate to attend 3 in one year .
Bagley's , The Forum and The Emporium and they were ALL amazing.
As said previously though, if you are lucky enough to get a ticket , be prepared for a long long wait outside and then you may still not get in if your name isnt on the list smile
The only downside to attending an aftershow is the fact that you'll be TIRED . Prince doesnt get tired, but us mere mortals DO.
For example before the Bagleys Warehouse show, Prince had already played at Wembley Arena and before that played a mini-concert for the BBC . all in the same day !
We got to Wembley at 8am , and left at 10 am the following day !!! We didn't get out of Bagleys until at least 6 or 7am. and that was after watching an entire concert at Wembley.
The highpoints of an aftershow is the spontaneity , not knowing what Prince will perform next.
And of course he seems to save his best guitar performances for these shows smile

First of all, if you are a big Prince fan, you need to download or trade for the numerous aftershows that are circulating on CD and mp3. If you haven't heard the "Small Club" show and others, you are really missing out.

As far as what to expect, as others said, expect to be up late and expect for close quarters near the stage. There are always dishonest people trying to push up to the front, so sometimes you have to block them and not let them by, but you don't want to get into a fight over it either. But get there early and be prepared to wait hours sometimes before Prince hits the stage. It will all be worth it, but it may be an exhausting experience. It was a lot easier for me when I was 26..I'm 36 now and it would probably kick my ass to do that again. Of course I would in a heartbeat though.

But get to downloading unless you are content with just listing to Kiss and Let's Go Crazy every day.

Back in '88 he used to play for a lot more people and do aftershows. These shows were just not announced and were really surprise gigs at some club. aftershows are not the same anymore.

Btw, to the original poster: eat and drink (alcohol free) well before cueing up. You will be on your feet for hours and hours before Prince hits the stage, like Metalorange said!
