JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE SICK OF PRINCE, THIS SONG PULLED YOU BACK

I don't know about you, but I've been a Prince fan for a long time now, and even though I know the man is a true genius and a genuine artistic hero of our time, I do get fed up with his music sometimes. I know his music so well I don't even need to put a record on. I have not listened to a Prince record from beginning to end in some time, but I'm huge enough a Prince fan to think "Parade" and hear the entire record in my head at any time of the day -- it's just that ingrained.

But still... I regularly get fed up with Prince's music. Every once in a while, I tell myself "That's it! I couldn't possibly put another Prince song on!" I've felt this way lately, which is kind of incredible considering the amount of news the man has been getting should have wetted my appetite. But no... I was bored.

Then I put "17 Days"...

Dammit!

Anything like that ever happened to you? And what song pulled you back?

The long version of I Would Die 4 U. If I was in a coma, this would bring me around again.

It has to be stuff that I haven't listened to in awhile. Like stuff off of 'For You', or 'Prince'. I can remember that happening with 'When We're Dancing Close And Slow'.

Good question, happens to me all the time. I never get sick of prince but I do go through periods where I don't listen to him much. Then, I'll put on something old of his, not anything real successful, something like "she's always In my Hair" and I'm 16 again and I remember why I wanted to become a musician.

Well, When I got Crystal Ball for my 17th birthday in 98, I was kinda sick of the cursing Prince and the skinny weird looking one and all that rock shit (it is not shit but he just wasnt mekin me feel him). CD contained "Good Love"

WOOOOO SHIIIITTTTT! I played that song 10 times in a row!

Then after that "Rave" came out and WOOOOOH "So Far So Pleased"

ooooh, and then "The Rainbow Children" CD....that was IT! I had to join NPGMC.
Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

Can it be that only half a dozen Orgers get sick of Prince from time to time?

Come on now! It doesn't mean you are a bad fan -- in fact, probably just the opposite...

That's another wonderful thing about being a Prince fan. The man literrally seems to have a song to fit every possible mood you may find yourself in. It's really amazing when you think about it.

But in all honesty, I've never really gotten sick of Prince in the 20 plus years that I've been a fan because I just rotate my stock, so to speak. If all of Prince's albums sounded the same, then getting sick of him would be major problem. But it seems like just when I get tired of listening to one or two albums from one era, I pull out something I haven't listened to in several months and the process starts all over again for me.

I have though on occassion FORCED myself NOT to listen to anything by Prince for a couple of weeks... now THAT is hard.

I also make it a point to continue to listen to other artist's music all the time.... which I think also helps to keep me from getting sick of his music.

I don't get sick of Prince for lack of listening to other artists. Maybe when he releases a new album, I get into it a bit thick, but nothing exceptional... I just know every darn song so well and I have a pretty good memory. If I start thinking about, say, Controversy and sorta play the song in my head, a couple of minutes later I'm playing Sexuality, then Do me Baby, then Private Joy, etc.... I can stop thinking about the music for a couple of minute, then when I think about it again, I'm about at the same place where the cd would be if it had played non-stop. Is that sick or what? smile

I guess there are many factors, but the point is that he always somehow pull me back with one of his songs. There's a lot to choose from and they are of course very diverse songs. I'd say that if you are going to obsess about a single artist, you cannot find anything as rich, varied and plentiful as Prince's music.

Yeah... that IS pretty sick! razz But I'm totally with you, I know where you're coming from. I guess the "pull back" for me is when I just go to a different album. So I think we're probably saying the same thing, but just from a slightly different perspective.

How about this. Have you ever encountered a certain situation in real life, and then immediately a song or lyric from a Prince song that matches or resemebles that situation pops in your head? And then, sometimes I catch myself singing that particular line from song and then I might wonder to myself why I'm singing that song... and just about then is when I realize the lyrics match the situation I'm dealing with at the moment. It's all automatic, it's not like I'm trying to think of particular song intentionally... it just seems to happen from out of nowhere.

Was listening to Joe Kelley today and heard Bambi...RAWK baby! But then again I've been "warming up" as it were for 3/29...

17 Days: one of my faves that does that for me too. He performed that in Long Beach, CA behind the curtain for his opener....I was 15-16 year old girl in love. See Y that remains? (Also cuz he pointed the microphone at me during the encore of I Would Die 4 U...screech, omg!)

Thanks...he does do that to us, and I thank him for it. Cuz I been sick of him, and now he's acting like he's listening to his marketing dept! (Course now that I have no chance, thanks smile )

Year 2 of NPGMC just about put me over the edge, then I heard the Nighttown bootleg performance of "Whole Lotta Love" which blew me away. Actually, that whole 1st disc is incredible.

I was feeling the same way Aerogram, then I listened to Around the World in a Day .

I haven't listened to it in ages and it shook me out of my slump.

Just recently I've been putting everything into i-tunes on my MAC...

Well I've had to block about two whole weeks off when it came to my prince collection!

i-tunes is so cool with the organization of your music that I'm rediscovering all these tunes that I haven't played in years. I have another computer that used to be my main one years back during the napster "hey-day". So this week I've been putting those files in my i-tunes as well and I found that there were so many songs that I haven't even heard of. Back then I used to set up a bunch of downloads and let it go throughout the night so you can imagain my supprise when I heard "Peak the Technique" for the first time!

Now I'm organizing a whole "Vault" section in my i-tunes from legit releases to studio recordings to live recordings then putting them in chronological order. I'm pretty anal about file organization on my computer.

So yeah, I'm on another Prince kick!
Listened to "Goldni**a" just yesterday and forgot about that tune "oilcan".
There are some real jems in EVERY release

There are a bunch of crappy concert audio files that I'll be deleting though. I've learned that I can live without EVERY LITTLE THING. If you want to be a "completest" type collector with Prince, your in for a full time job!

WAAAAY to much out there... and even harder to get these days.

I still don't have this "Small Club" recording that everyone raves about.
