Moderator | Peak The Technique Ok, this monster jam knocked me off my chair and on the floor cryin for what could have been or should be released, but somehow think it will never be.
So far I figured it's Michael Bland on drums. (Now I know why everyone praises him so!) Sonney T on bass - (sweet suculent synth sacrement!) Morris Hayes on keys (dude had some MAD crazy voice samples) Tevin Cambel on piano? what, where, how, who was this! The sound is excellent like it was live to DAT. This is F.U.N.K. NPG at its finest! (and nastiest) Was there a studio version of this? Does anyone know more about this song? All Rights Reserved. |

It was just a funky jam, not recorded in the studio, to my knowledge. Jimmy Jam was on the piano for this track, not Tevin (although Tevin was in attendance that night). The band was Sonny, Morris, Mike B, Tommy and _____ [This message was edited Thu Mar 18 6:19:26 2004 by JediMaster] Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. I assume it was at the same gig as the Beautiful Experience tracks (Interactive, DoW, Now, Shhh, the Jam) were recorded for.
It certainly appears on the same boot and sounds like it is all once show - there's also (from memory) None of yo business, What'd I say and Martial law. maybe a few others.

I've seen this as a 'legal' release, in Italy. By whatever laws they have there it seemed to be legally available, at least in 95.
Oh, and a great gig Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

Lenny has a problem with the guitar, or ins't happy with it or somethin'. I think P called him "Bud Light" because he may have had one two many beers! Anyway, if you listen to his speaking voice, you can tell its Lenny. (I also had a friend, who was in the know at the time, hip me to Lenny's presence on the track. I probably wouldn't have caught it either). _____ [This message was edited Thu Mar 18 6:59:31 2004 by JediMaster] Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. Moderator | Great info!
That just made it all the better! Peak the Technique and Martial Law are one track on the one I heard... I just played back "What I Say?" and Prince was whoopin up on "Bud-lite". Telling him he was in the wrong key. When it came time for a solo, it sounded like he froze. Prince goes: "Uh-oh... oh, you don't like that guitar? Get him another one then" I think I read about this show before. I didn't know where this song came from. All Rights Reserved. |

Wish P would do an official release of the video production, and include all the live performances on the extras section! I also wouldn't mind an official release of the show on CD (I'd buy it again!) Oh well, I can dream, can't I? thought the "Bud Light" dude was the lead guitarist for one of the other MPLS bands to semi make it big, Soul Asylum.
Could be wrong? Didn't know Lenny was in attendance.

Damn if it's around in video (aside from the Beautiful Experience tracks), i wannit NOW And either Prince is bullshitting when he says, "they say they gotta reload the cameras so we just gonna play the blues for 5 minutes - cool?" or at least some of it wasn't filmed...

I bet Tevin and Tommy were bumpin' poom-pooms...don'tcha think? No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Moderator | Those Morris Hayes clips during the breaks!
Oh man those are great! I want a sample CD of those! Announcer voice: "Ladies and gentlemen... Now" The drunk guy: "Go'head ni****..." "Who you say this mo'er fu'er was?" "No man... FU man" Old man: "somebody better turn that GD noise Off!" The Bernie Mac(?) clip: "Stir it like coffee" "You don't understand..." "Kick Ass!" The county slang voice (I think is prince): "Now you see right there, that's funky" "Now that's what the American People want right there" "How many ya'll is it?" Some other voice: "All right you MF's!" "Oh, no MF, Not today!" "Kick Some Sh**!" "F-that" Those bass synths The high pitch harmonizer P had on his vocals... The high screaming from the guy on the piano... This was about as George Clinton(ish) kinda live Funk Prince has ever done. "Now Sonny, They said if I steped on you foot, you might do something funky!" then BAM! great solo... "Now Morris, They said if I kissed your head, you might do something funky!" I'd like to have seen that show. Sounds like everyone in the crowd is having the time of their lives. ... All Rights Reserved. |

What I know about the whole thing:
It was filmed and recorded at Paisley Park on Valentine's Day, 1994. Some of the Live footage was used in the Japanese TV special "The Beautiful Experience". The audio was broadcast on the radio, somewhere in Europe. Lots of celebs were in attendance that night, including Lenny Kravitz, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Salt & Peppa, Soul Asylum, Winona Ryder, Tevin Campbell and a few sports figures that I don't know (not a sports fan). Jimmy Jam and Lenny Kravitz both joined Prince onstage. This was the show that he debuted the symbol-shaped guitar. This was the show he shaved Mr. Hayes head on stage! This was the show where he debuted "Shhh" live, leading Tevin to make the dumb-ass comment that he wished Prince would stop playing "his" song live (Prince had donated the song to Tevin for his second album. After this comment, P recorded his own version for inclusion on TGE, essentially taking back the song, and putting to rest whose song it actually was!) It was fonky as hell!!! Side note...the NBA All-Star Game was in Minnie that weekend, which helped the celebrity count, as many celebrities were in town for the game. Prince seized the opportunity to perform for them. Salt & Pepa were in the house at Paisley because the NBA had them in town to perform at the game. That's why P played their jam, "None of Your Business."
A good number of current and former basketball legends were in the house. Prince, a lifetime basketball afficionado, really enjoyed playing to that crowd. That's why he displayed his own "all-star" skills on multiple instruments, including the drums. The Cream performing for the cream, you might say...
