Songs You'd Like To Hear Prince Cover?

I was listening to the audio of Prince's solo on 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' and thought of some other songs I'd like to hear him do. Two that I think he could wail on are 'Love Rears It's Ugly Head' by Living Colour and 'Voodoo Chile' by Jimi Hendrix.

Honestly... NONE. I used to get excited when I heard Prince go into a cover on a bootleg- the bit of SHOOP by Salt'n Peppa or HONKY TONK WOMEN on THE UNDERTAKER. But then when he started doing real covers- BETCHA BY GOLLY WOW, EVERYDAY IS A WINDING ROAD, etc. they BLEW!! And WHOLE LOTTA LOVE on the Vegas DVD is EMBARASSING!! Seriously, one of my musician friends who is on the fence about Prince saw it and started laughing! I had to quick take it out and show him some of the LOVESEXY concert vid as damage control.

Prince is not good at covers and there is no reason in the world he should be doing them. He's brilliant on his own and has a million ideas. Why waste that time and talent doing half assed versions of LA LA LA LA LA MEANS I LOVE YOU?!

Another good exampe would be Van Halen. They did some really good covers early in their career- YOU REALLY GOT ME being a good example. Then they put out 4 albums of their own stuff. Then suddenly on the fifth record DIVER DOWN they had tons of covers again. And that is the worst selling of the David Lee Roth Van Halen records and is looked upon as a dissappointment by most fans. People simply wanted to hear Van Halen- not a really good bar band.

And honestly, Prince doesn't even make a very good bar band. He's PRINCE!!

I think I would like to hear Prince play Superstition by Stevie Wonder, Mysterious Ways by U-2, Money or some other PINK FLOYD song, some Grand Funk AMERICAN BAND or LOCOMOTION, Some Eagles HOTEL CALIFORNIA, Zepplin's BLACK DOG, Jefferson STARSHIp,Airplane's White Rabbit. How bout Vanilla Fudge stuff or how about Talking Heads stuff. God, I have so Many Ideas about what someone like Prince could play or Handle. He can do anything. I would Love to also hear him sing LOVIN YOU and MARIA MULDAUER"S MIDNIGHT AT THE OASIS. And how about revisting the DISCO ERA? Imagine all the Disco songs he could try? That would be DIFFERENT also. Also what about more Electronic say 80's New Wave sounds? Could he do CARS by Gary NUMAN or ROCK N ROLL by GARY GLITTER? How bout Elvis Costello? God the list is Really Endless and it could be EXCITING and NEW ALL the TIME cause he could add a new tune each concert or a couple. Also Prince has Chicago songs he could try.

(sudden high school flashback)...i remember that shit! falloff all he'd have to do for a remake of that is play "orgasm" forwards, then backwards, then forwards again.

"HOW DOES IT FEEL" by D'Angelo, since it sounds more like a prince song anyway.

Or Sean Paul.."Just Give me the Light" like he did at the NYC aftershow (all three lines that is).

While My Guitar Gently Weeps - all instrumental.

I'd have to agree that Prince shouldn't do covers in concert (other than as part of a medley,
or throwing a few lines of something into one of his own songs). They're definitely more of
and 'aftershow' kinda thing.

but anyway, here's some suggestions...

Celebrity Skin - Hole
Rock & Roll - Led Zeppelin
Buffalo Soldier - Bob Marley
Higher Ground - Stevie Wonder
Help me - Joni Mitchell
Young Americans - David Bowie
Past the Mission - Tori Amos
Angie - The Rolling Stones
Boogie Chillen' - John Lee Hooker
Let's Stay Together - Al Green
Just Like Heaven - The Cure

I'm not too fond of Prince's studio covers, but he seems to be far removed from Emancipation in spirit...so...:

"Fencewalk"/Mandrill
"Can't You Hear Me Knocking?"/Rolling Stones
"Symphonic Revolution"/Mandrill
"My City Was Gone"/The Pretenders
"Funky Stuff"/Kool & The Gang
"Hagalo"/Mandrill
"Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic"/Isaac Hayes
"Kofijahm"/Mandrill
"Poor Tom"/Led Zeppelin
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
