Latest CJ article from Star Tribune

More Prince magic?

Before Prince jetted off to NYC for his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, Hollywood gossip Janet Charlton said he was working out West with "new protegee" Nikka Costa. "He spent five or six hours working with her on her new CD in her recording studio. She's a singer. He's taken a shine to her," Charlton said. She gave me this info because "Nobody else is interested; I couldn't sell it anywhere." Charlton, who respects Prince as an artist and as a fashion icon, expects a renewed interest in all of Prince's moves after his Grammy-opening turn with Beyonce. "He was so fabulous when he performed with Beyonce," Charlton said. "I thought he left Beyonce in the dust." See, I thought that act was all about Beyonce even though they were mostly performing Prince's music. "Whenever he works with some new female performer, it always does something for her magical to make her a celebrity," Charlton said. But Prince's protegees, and Beyonce's not one, don't usually do well after he has lost interest. "Right, they become very famous when they are with him, except for Carmen Electra. Watch your step, Nikka," Charlton said. Prince is suddenly everywhere; he was on TV again Monday -- this time with Matt Lauer on "Today." Charlton has a theory about why, beyond needing money and promoting his summer concert tour. "He was too weird for too long. I think Michael Jackson jolted him back into reality." Neither of us is suggesting that Prince has the kind of issues Jackson is now facing, but "there is something about people who are so spooky, reclusive, controlling that seems weird to us," Charlton said. "He actually went to [Grammy] parties and everything. That's unheard of. I think being reclusive didn't pay off for him. It just made people forget him instead of wanting him more." Told that current spousal unit Manuela is to be credited with helping to humanize him, Charlton wondered: "What's his wife like? Does she allow him to control her a little less than the others perhaps, and she's actually leading him into reality?" Symbolina's not letting any interviewer get to the bottom of these questions

I think calling anybody's wife a spousal unit is rude doncha think?

Yes, it is rude, especially since there's no evidence that Manuella is actually his legal "spousal unit" wink lol

Not really. So what?

That's just how these gossip columnists write. They're always coming up with alternative ways to say "husband" or "wife".

Of course, CJ does have a stick up her butt where Prince is concerned so I'm sure she wasn't trying to be overly respectful.

Prince fans gotta chill out a bit though anyway. The fact is the rest of the world isn't going to always write or comment about Prince, or his career, or his wife, or his personality, in the glowing, fawning, slobbering terms that a lot of folks around here or at the NPGMC, do.

"Spousal unit" to me doesn't seem to be a phrase worth getting my underpants in a bunch over.

Wow, I had never heard this. I took it for granted they were married after reading reports of their wedding, but that could've been rumor.

Of course contractual constructs of marriage and divorce mean nothing to a man who is above such pedestrian concepts. Witness the way he dissolved his union with Mayte, or at least the way he spun it. First, they were divorcing because no legal document could contain their boundless love, and next thing you knew she had moved out of the country.

As for shadier implications of the article nobody touched on, does anyone believe P and Nikka are really doing the "Push and Pull"?

I don't know why we're all attacking the character of this lovely, delicate flower of a woman. You can tell just by looking at her that all she wants is to be loved.

The "Symbolina" thing is silly. She knows it is insulting, especially with her being a black woman. She should use her forum to promote Prince to all the young blacks in the Minneapolis area as a great role model to what you can accomplish with dreams and hard work.
At least at the moment of this great honor for Prince she should put aside any hard feelings.

Why is Nikka Costa working with Prince? Her last album was so damn good - far better than anything Prince has done in the past ten years. She don't need Prince. I can see how Prince would need her. But what's in it for her? Are they an item now or something? Prince doesn't work with good-looking women he hasn't fucked, as evidenced by his own past behavioural pattern. Does this mean that Prince is divorcing Manuela? Not that I have anything against Manuela. I dont know her from Steve. But she's a JW and I sincerely doubt that Nikka is, so if this is a sign of Prince leaving the JWs, I'm all for it. biggrin

Thanks to CJ for another great news item. woot!

I said "good-looking"! mad

Well, Mavis and Rosie aren't exactly what you'd call "babes". They are exceptions to the rule, as evidenced by him focusing on his harem and leaving others to work on The Voice and Rosie's album. Incidentally, Rosie DID mention in one of those many books that she was frustrated by Prince turning all his attention to talentless girls rather than her album. biggrin

I wouldn't really get upset with anything that C.J. writes. She's a gossip columnist,it's her job to pick on celebrities, distort facts and comment on their personal lives. And Janet Charlton is a "writer" for the Star tabloid.

but the "Symbolina" thing is kinda old.At least she should come up with a NEW offensive name to make fun of him with lol

Did you think about this before you posted? Maybe Prince has written some songs that Nikka
Costa liked. Her last record was a huge bomb. I am sure she will take whatever help she can get.
