Musicology: Method Of Marketing Ok, so everyone has got an idea or question concerning PRINCE's latest record "Musicology"...here is my theory about the new album and PRINCE's marketing plan...atleast what I'd do if I were the artist!
Ok...so were gonna announce the new album and tour in L.A, plus give a sneak preview of the new single and title track of MUSICOLOGY! With Live Set and Video! Promotion begins: Jay Leno, Ellen Degeneres, Tavis Smiley, and of course the Grammys, gave notice to PRINCE , for those who have no clue! Well, now...PRINCE is planning on releasing the new record to concert goers and those who attend the Musicology Theatre Concert Broadcast...which is awesome...so now all the die hards have a copy of the new disc, which will cause WORD OF MOUTH, if the record is as hott! as PRINCE Is saying it is!...from the snippet of 'CALL MY NAME' and performances of 'MUSICOLOGY'...we already know the album is funk and R/B...so what else...? hmmm we'll hear it on the 29th when we actually have the opportunity to download the full length record from NPGMUSICCLUB.COM! So the question being now...how can he sell this record in stores if we own it now!? And what major label would take interest in this record being that tons of fans have it already! and so here is my idea...What if he decided to add 3-4 new trax onto 'MUSICOLOGY', and one of those trax were leaked to major top 40 radio stations across the globe and was promoted and pushed to the top! Then this would generate more ppl who are occassionally into PRINCE to buy his records or those who aren't fans but are willing to listen and possibly decide to finally purchase the new disc...and not to mention those who have no computer/internet service...or aren't able to attend any of the concerts...for any reason. And here is the catch...WE'D BUY IT AGAIN, because the new disc that we got for free, just by attending the concert or theatre show wouldnt feature the bonus trax...and of course the internet geeks who download the new album, may want to own a hard copy of the cd...so thats what I think PRINCE will do! Along with A Television Special on a Major Network...to promote the tour and new album... Which would also boost sells...if aired around the time the album is released in stores... Ppl will buy this record if Marketed and Promoted correctly... What ya'll think? www.newpowerdetroit.com

I think most would be please at first and then start bitching once they heard that a different disc went to the stores. It'd increase with folks saying how prince likes to bleed his core fans etc etc.
I think his method of marketing this cd is a little weird (but so have all of the others)..and I am not sure of what to expect. If the album really rocks, fans would get it again…sure. But if not…well there’d be a lot of those on the shelves. I mean P is in fine form and I think he’ll make a lot of money during this tour…so maybe he doesn’t care how sales do. I think he just wants people to like it and to have it and to listen to it. I think that may be one of his aims this time. Personally, I don’t think he’s ever going to get the sales/radio play he wants or that some of us want. From this or any other release. I could be wrong..and I hope I am. I just think that music and how it’s marketed and played these days and what everyone’s into, doesn’t groove with how he does it anymore…it’s been like this for a while…and he’s been trying to catch up with the sales/marketing game. He’s not the greatest business man. All I know is that I’ll have it, enjoy it and not have to wait til the concert or for stores to get it. Christian Zombie Vampires

I'm with Squirrelgrease on this - all he'll hand out at concerts and such is a CD-R with a link to NPGMC where you can download the album for free, once you've paid the $25 admission. FREE THE 29 MAY 1993 COME CONFIGURATION!
