2004 Rock Hall simulcast musings from Detroit Crawl view For many of us Prince fans that went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Monday nite in Cleveland, we had the opportunity to venture all around the museum and the actual hall of fame -- all for $10! I heard that normal price of a museum ticket is upwards of $20, and the smallest membership price is $25, so it was a real treat to take it all in.
Yeah, the simulcast didn't start until a few minutes after 8:30pm Eastern time, abut a half hour late, but the vibe was electric. There was equal parts representation of Prince as well as Detroit rocker Bob Seger and a large contingent for ZZ Top. Funniest thing for me was seeing this 6-foot-4 cowboy ZZ Top fan in a large stetson smoking a cigar bobbing and grooving to Prince's opening performance. It was amazing that this year's simulcast was not going to be aired in Cleveland. The Rock Hall in Cleveland halted and did not air the 2003 induction ceremony in Cleveland and it was doubtful through early January 2004 if last night's simulcast was going to get off the ground. But it worked out and of what I saw, nearly 1000 showed up. I heard it was the largest turnout for a simulcast in years. Not too sure of what has been posted in this section on Prince.Org, but wanted to let you in from another perspective. There were three levels of TV screens and huge drop screens for you to see the simulcast -- the main floor next to the U2 Zoo TV tour sign and Moby and Gwen (Stefani) signs and right below on the main lower level outside of the main viewing hall. There was another wide screen TV set up near the food area on the third floor, east of the hall of fame section overlooking Lake Erie. Prince's purple sequiened jacket, that used to be on the main exhibition hall as part of a timeline of clothes (it used to be right in front of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean 1983 costume and right next to Bruce Springsteen's Born In The USA torn jeans and red cap -- across the aisle from TLC's No Scrubs video costumes). The Purple Rain-era coat (which I think is different than the Rude Boy purple overcoat from Controversy that was on display in this clothes exhibit (last time I saw the purple Rude Boy coat was December 2002) is now on display at the end of a walkway ramp inside the actual hall of fame shrine area. Prince's crystal signature is not on display yet in the hall of fame. For those that have not been to the museum yet (I have been three five times since 1995 while some Detroit Crawl Motor Babies and members of Chicagonation were at the Rock Hall for the first time Monday night) the crystal signatures go in alphabetical order. Maybe by April 17 the Prince signature we all know will be on display -- his first trip to Cleveland since the induction. He plays Gund Arena on April 17. Anyway in wrapping up, the purple coat is on display in a case with his yellow D&P cloud guitar (with symbols on the frets), a gun microphone, a tamboracca, the penciled lyrics of Days of Wild, and assorted 45s and 12-inches and Rolling Stone magazines. Hopefully many of you if you are going to Cleveland on April 17 will take time to check out the Rock Hall before the concert. The museum gets better every time I go there. Wonder if there will be more Prince memoribilia added to the museum collection. Although most of us left for the club before 11pm, I guess we should have stayed for the ending all-star jam. I was told that the closer was the price of admission alone. Prince blew Tom Petty and the rest off the stage, as those Getty Images pix can attest. I just hope we see the closing act with Prince on guitar blasting away on George Harrison's While My Guitar Gently Weeps on VH1 Sunday night. Peace to The Crawl and Chicagonation family, DJ AMP for spinning the vibe into the late nite at Spy Bar and to Bruce H. Everyone was instrumental in landing the simulcast. Just hope all got out in one peice as the snow was starting to fall. Cleveland was to have gotten 10 inches Tuesday and Detroit up to 5 inches of white fluff. Look for the induction night pictures from Cleveland on TheDetroitCrawl.Org in the coming week. [This message was edited Tue Mar 16 15:42:04 2004 by a2grafix]

Well, the crystal signature is what the Rock Hall does to honor those that made it into the hall of fame. Best I can describe is walking up a curved incline aisle and viewing black display boards with white crystal-ish signatures for all the groups, duos and bands that have been inducted. There is ambient light, white and purple, creating a aura of silence and reverence. You have to se it to understand.

I am Glad to say I also made it from Detroit to see Prince inducted. We all know he deserves to be there. I have been a Prince fan since Soft and Wet thur Purple Rain and have remained a devoted fan for N.E.W.S.
I Missed he's exhibit By the time I arrived I heard the show start, I was wondering if they had any exhibit of he's things. I LOVE PRINCE AND ALWAYS WILL BE A FAN.

My sister and I were there and we stayed until the bitter end! GREAT show! Also, I was interviewed by Channel 3 local news. I was wearing the One Night Alone Tour shirt, and a camera man and reporter came up to me and asked if they could film the shirt. I was kind of in shock, because I knew he was going to ask me to speak on camera. Sure enough, he asked me to briefly tell why we came all the way from Detroit to be there. I babbled on about what a phenomenal man Prince was, and how he was an inspiration to me because I'm a musician, too. Afterwards, I thought I probably shoulda put in a plug for Bob Seger, too, but oh, well.
This was supposed to have been on the 11 o'clock news--anyone from the .org in the Cleveland area see it? The party at the Spy Bar was cool, too. DJ Amp really kept the party going!

I watched the raw feed yesterday. Trust me when I say he kicked a** on the solo!!!! When he leaned back off the stage and had Trevor catch him and at the end he throws down his guitar pick, throws his guitar up in the air and pimp walks off the stage..it was priceless!!! I had everyone in the office watching it and we kept playing that part over and over. His opening was great too. -Tine

I'm sorry I didn't meet any of you guys from Detroit. I met tons of Seger fans from Detroit though. I also missed the exhibit of Prince stuff which makes me angry considering they have MY records on display. I didn't want to miss any of the show so I didn't walk around at all.
A2, Can you tell me which 45's and 12" records they used in the display? They borrowed about 40 of my records but said they wouldn't use them all. I'm assuming they used the picture disc 45 for "Sexy MF", but what else? Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

I'm assuming they used the picture disc 45 for "Sexy MF", but what else? From what I saw, and this is going from a "purple rain" induced buzz (free drink!), I did see one of the Rolling Stone mags from 1983 (or 1984 or 1985 -- the one with Prince raising his arm up, yeah, from 1999-era PRINCE SCORES), My Name Is Prince 12-inch, Partyman 12-inch, and I did see something I have never seen before -- a 45 of Soft N Wet and Baby. Hopefully at home point the Rock Hall will expand their collection from Prince and self-enclose it, like they have of Jeff Buckley on the third floor. You know -- a 7-8-foot by 20-foot encased display. If you want to get a look of the 2004 inductee display case -- check out WKYC-TV Channel 3's Monday evening preview before the simulcast. Check it out via Cleveland.Com and you need RealOne Player real stream. In the pre-hype of Monday's simulcast, I see in the video two people from Covington, KY (outside Cincinnati), who traveled up for the simulcast. Thanks for the reply. I need to go back sometime soon to check it out.
As for the "Soft and wet" 45, can you believe I picked that up at a used record store in Hermatage (sp?) PA called Flipside for only $5.00? That was about 1997. That sucker is worth $30.00 in most record guides! That is the same store I bought the 12" for "Let's work" for only $18.00! I just recently got the 45 for "Just as long as we're together" from a record store in London for only $5.00 (off the internet). Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

Well, if you have not seen the TV reports by now on Monday's simulcast (Entertainment Tonight, Access, Extra, E! Entertainment TV) then let me remember ... I know Alicia was saying there are many kings but only one Prince -- King James (she was not tlaking about LeBron "King" James, the Cavaliers NBA 19-year old phenom), King Tut, King Kong ... Andrea 3K started first and he was saying that he remembered hearing Soft N Wet when he was only 3 years old. Big Boi said something too (forgot) but both Outkast members were going off the cuff and just drawing out the induction for Prince. Tune in Sunday March 21 for the complete thing. I really hope we see Prince and Tom Petty and Dhani Harrison during the Geroge Harrison tribute.

I took my van, "the ride" which started out from Wi. where I reside & then 2 Milwaukee where Dawnrose resides, on 2 Chicago where Crystal & Lace17 were picked up. We got 2 the Gary Indiana turnpike area on I-90 & my vans alternator broke down, damaging my battery as well. Luckily we were right there at the McDonalds/mall plaza, so we called my AAA, got a ride from a VERY nice guy who worked there ( I 4get his name...sorry), Mind U, we were on the road since 12:30p.m. Sun. Got stranded at 7:00p.m., Dawnrose, (my guardian angel) was on her cell with AAA 4 1 1/2 hours!!!!AS well as trying 2 get us a rental car 2 keep rolling 2 cleveland. Things were closing up fast, so I figured we had MISSED the vacation/simucast we all looked 4ward 2. Dawnrose kept us ALL optimistic. She took pix of the "WHOLE THING". People and all. My van loading onto AAA....etc. COOL. Anywho, that guy gave us the ride 2 hertz at the airport, then getting into their LAST vehicle...we drove 2 cleveland & checked in 2 holiday inn at 5:00a.m. Enjoyed the next day on MINIMAL sleep, going 2 the museum, starbucks, etc. Got 2 the simucast at 7:30 & waited 4 it 2 start. It started abit after 8:30, with PRINCE making his dynamic entrance as he was on 1st. 4 the ladies: He wore an all white suit cut really cool as the one he wore on Leno. He looked really rested, young, HANDSOME & HAPPY. But what else is new about THAT??? He played Kiss 1st. The rest I cant remember as I was 2 xcited. Leave that 2 someone else. Tim? We sat in the 1st row in front of the huge screen. Never seen P THAT large & close b4. He was SMOKIN' is all I can say. We were all proud that we were there 2 represent from Wi., chicago, Detroit, cleveland, etc. So cool 2 have met Psychodelicide who is sooooo sweet, AdamS, Tracy, Jason, Motley, A2Grafix, PP1, and many others...sorry, cant remember all the names, but I do KNOW FACES...When prince finished, his induction speech was short but very sweet. Hope 2 get in on it on VH1!!!! The afterP was cool. We danced, princes music flowed & the system sounded very good. very loud. videos played on screens. We all had a BLAST! INTERESTING, indeed! Get ready Y'all 2 C prince sun. at 7 p.m. on VH1. It rocks. He's dynamic. All U new musicians out there: Get ready 2 LEARN from THE BEST there is!!!There is no better teacher.
