The 80's sound can't be matched, seems not even by him.

He performed more traditional arrangements in the last ten years and he (and most serious fans) were bored. I think the new arrangements are to deal with how fast he gets bored of doing songs the same way. If he's bored, he sleepwalks through the sets and the results are not better than ONA and what seems to be shaping up with the Musicology tour.

I'd just like to see him experiment with a different genre than jazz and funk. Synths and rock guitar would be the way to go.

RHONDA'S MIC DIDN'T WORK FOR AWHILE, PRINCE KEPT TELLING THEM TO TURN ONT HE HOUSE LIGHTS AND THEY WOULDN'T/DIDN'T. AND IF YOU GOT THERE EARLIER, INSTEAD OF BEING ON C.P. TIME YOU WOULD HAVE SEEN HOW PRINCE HAD TO PLUG IN HIS OWN AMP, etc. OVERALL THE CONCERT WAS GOOD(BETTER THAN ONA).

I STILL WANT TO KNOW WHY THE MALE SECURITY GUARDS WERE CHECKING FEMALES AND WHY THE BOUNCES WERE SELLING THE TICKETS OUTSIDE FOR LIKE $200?? eek

Okay, I'm gonna break this one down into a positive and negative review. But first I must say that I, EvilWhiteMale, actually thought the show was pretty fuckin hot. I know that may be hard to believe, but I really did enjoy (most) of the show. So here's the word:

POSITIVE:

I stepped inside the club as DMSR was already playing. I couldn't see shit cuz the place was so packed that I couldn't even see the stage. I could hear it though. And when I heard Prince play that guitar, I was like, "Oh damn, that shit sounds hot." After the song was done, my friend and I finally got onto the floor and got a descent view of the stage. Luckily we got in there cuz Prince was killin it on Controversy, Let's Work, Sign O The Times, Insatiable, The Question of U, and The Beautiful Ones, which was fuckin DOPE!! At the end of Controversy, he even had everyone chanting "People call me rude, I wish we all were nude, I wish there was no black and white, I wish there wer no rules." And on top of that his voice was as good as it ever was. He can still hit those notes and scream as well as he did 20 years ago. I was like "Damn Prince, where the fuck you been? You can still do this." He had a little "Chloreen Bacon Skin" moment as well, doing that raspy voice thing during a cool jam. And the guy was pretty funny also. During a slow groove, he was singing about some girl he's with who has bad breath cuz she ate the wrong kind of potato chips. Silly shit, but it was funny. So overall, I thought the show was very good. It was the best Prince show I've seen since around '96.

NEGATIVE:

Okay, now to be my normal critical self. I never thought I would be pissed about Prince starting early, but damn. Prince was on stage and there were still loads of people trying to get into the place. And at no fault to him, the place was totally disorganized and was probably a fire hazard with the way people were packed in there. But anyways, the first blunder of the show was letting Candy get moments to sing. She plays a hell of a sax, but she just doesn't work well on the mic. Not that she can't sing, but something was off. And speaking of solos, there were way too many. I have no problem with giving band members a moment to shine on stage, but when it's a small gig, it can be overdone very easily. Seriously, what the fuck was that Rubin Studdard looking dude doing in the front of the stage getting a singing solo? That was so wrong. And as I've said before, "too many horns." They worked okay throughout much of the show, but they were a bit much at times. Now what was fucked up was the way the show just declined in quality as it went on. After a bunch of good songs, Prince just had to go into some jazzy jam bullshit. Good Lord!!! It was getting boring very quickly, and even the crowd wasn't really feeling it. Then to make everything go to hell, the stage became full of people and the band started playing a very "Vegas" styled Soul Man. YUCK!!! That was just plain terrible. And then he finished it off with a lame version of Kiss. The same one he performed on Ellen. After that, he left the stage. The lights were still low and there was a pulsing tone still playing through the speakers. So we all figured it was a typical break before the encore. Everyone was chanting "We want Prince, We want Prince.." And then....motherfuckers started wrapping cables and gear on stage, and soon after, the house lights are on. Oohhhh, we got jerked!!! It was almost as if they broke our necks on purpose. Even for Prince, that was odd. I mean, that was the most anticlimactic moment ever. If he had just come out to do Bambi or something of equal power, the show would have been the bomb diggs, but no, it ended on a lame note.

So overall, the show was good, I'm not gonna front. I just wish he ended it things better than he did.

Other people's opinions mean absolutely nothing to me. Just because I enjoyed this show, doesn't mean I've been missing out all these years. I've been burned several times before, but Prince did well this time around. And just because he was good the other night, that doesn't mean he's been good these past few years.

EVM, the fact that you actually said something positive is a treat within itself. Your review was actually worth reading. Bravo to you!!!

I've been at shows that Prince has ended abruptly and without a climactic finish and when he does that it truly sucks like lousy sex, so I do understand what you felt in the negative part of you post, and I ain't mad at ya.

It's all good. But out of curiosity, why EVM and not EWM?

this is indeed a great review. I have one question.... I left the concert early because me and girl had to catch th 3:00 am train to DC but is it true that he was boo'd? Someone just told jme that on one of our radio stations they are reporting that he was boo'd.

I thought the concert was excellent also. Hearing the first jazz cut (no idea what the name is)for the first time. I thought that song was beautiful!!! I had never heard Musicology and I have to agree with the other fans, i didn't care too much for it. Then he played some cut called "house party" which actually was dragging. And you are also right when you said too many horns.. What the *&%$!!!

He changed the words to DMSR and that was AWFUL!!!!!

I WOULD RATHER HIM NOT SING HIS OLD STUFF IF HE IS GOING TO BUTCHER IT BY CHANGING THE WORDS. JUST DON'T SING IT!!! LAWD JESUS!!!

The show was good, but that damn club was the worst.
too many damn people were in there and i am not a big guy so i got thrown around and pushed like a rag doll.

i swear i could not find a decent spot to see the stage until half way through the show.
the side of the stage on the 2nd and 3rd levels were reserved for "VIP's". what a joke.

the fire marshalls and police were in the building at one point and i thought that they were going to shut the place down. at one point i was trapped in a crowd of people and could not breathe or move. i finally was about to get me and my friend out of that area and move on, but i tell you it was not pleasant at all.

the one good thing i can say is that i am glad i am a member of the npgmc because when i got there the line was wrapped around the block. finally i heard one of the jerk off bouncers yell out "NP3 members" and i was like he must mean "NPG members" so he directed us to the very front of the line.

The highligh of the show for me was the beautiful ones. i mean that arrangment and prince's vocals on that was amazing!! then that damn prince went into insatiable and killed it!! rhonda even had that low ass bass drop just like on the record and when she hit that note you could feel the entire club vibrate from straight up bass!!

I didn't hear any boo's, but anything's possible. If the boo's were towards the end of the show, it would make sense cuz that's when everythiung went downhill. I did notice that through parts of the show, the crowd seemed bored or just not excited at all. That jazzy jam bullshit definitely put people to sleep.

It does suck. But luckily he can't change what you have on CD right now. But I'm sure he would if he could.

Shit, if that happens to me, I'll part that crowd like the Red Sea. I've been in mosh pits for Slipknot, Hatebreed, Kittie, Korn, etc. Once the pushing starts, I make it known that I'll push back without fucking around.

i swear i could not find a decent spot to see the stage until half way through the show.

I know. The VIP's weren't even that much into the show. Meanwhile, the rest of us had to get crushed.

the fire marshalls and police were in the building at one point and i thought that they were going to shut the place down. at one point i was trapped in a crowd of people and could not breathe or move. i finally was about to get me and my friend out of that area and move on, but i tell you it was not pleasant at all.

The FDNY walked right through the crowd in front of us. I was sure there was gonna be an issue with the overcrowding. I guess they were satisfied.

Or maybe it's the fact that he kept giving Larry the stage all the time. Maybe I don't like paying to see a Prince show, and all I get is Larry doing old Sly songs. Perhapse that has something to do with my bitterness.

hmmm

I was there as well and I LOVED the show. I actually liked the horns- it added more funk to the sound. Maceo and Candy are great!

But I have always been very critical as well...
The wait in the cold was longer than the show- it can get cold on 56th st at night mad -bouncers scalping tickets and letting folks get in on the front of the line after I paid my money upfront- not a happy camper at all.

The place was too crowded, even for NYC and wayyyyy over the limit of 2843 (I work at an arts center and read those signs out of habit biggrin ) that was worse than the Padillidum/ Dance theater benefit eons ago. It was hard to see the stage and the litle man and waiters kept moving through the crowd with flashlights to deliver champange upfront!!! Too many interruptions!! The rooms upstairs were awful people climbing over each other to see- watching a concert through bars?! 2 bottles of champange min to sit down?! I went back downstairs.

Other Positive notes:

Loved hearing the beautiful ones - what a treat. I was hoping for all "non-hits" stuff but I still enjoyed it. Let's work!! my jam from back in the day.... Danced the entire time - I hope that hte tour isn't the same thing though.....I'll find out at the movie theater in NJ on the 29th.....
ain't nothing but a muffin...got alotta butta to go..
