Ap Article on Prince's Performance @ RRHOF

Prince Dances Into Rock and Roll Hall

By DAVID BAUDER, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK - With nimble dance steps, blistering guitar and a trio of 1980s-era hits, Prince extended his purple reign to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday.

Detroit rocker Bob Seger (news), California singer-songwriter Jackson Browne (news) and ex-Beatle George Harrison (news) also joined the hall at its annual induction ceremony, along with ZZ Top, Traffic and the Dells.

Dressed in a white suit Prince brought the normally staid crowd to its feet with some vintage funk-rock. He played three of his hits: "Let's Go Crazy," "Sign O' the Times" and "Kiss."

A restless perfectionist, the Minneapolis-based singer often played every instrument on his discs. He said he was preoccupied early in his career with maintaining his freedom.

"I embarked on a journey more fascinating than I could ever imagine, but a word to the wise to the young artists — without spiritual guidance too much freedom can lead to spiritual decline," he said.

He also warned youthful musicians, "A real friend and mentor is not on your payroll."

Prince was inducted by outrageous rappers OutKast and soulful singer Alicia Keys (news), who said Prince influenced them as they grew up.

"There are many kings," Keys said. "King Henry VIII, King Solomon, King Tut, King James, King Kong and the three kings. But there is only one Prince."

Seger, who still lives in the Detroit area, burst from regional to national fame with the hits "Night Moves," "Old Time Rock & Roll" and "Like a Rock," the latter a longtime Chevy commercial theme.

Michigan's governor declared Monday "Bob Seger Day" in the state.

Browne co-wrote "Take it Easy" for the Eagles, then was successful on his own with "Doctor My Eyes," "The Pretender" and "Running on Empty."

The "No Nukes" concert organizer has mixed the political with the personal throughout his career.

Tom Petty (news) and Jeff Lynne (news), two fellow members of the Traveling Wilburys, were on hand to salute Harrison. The guitarist joins John Lennon (news) and Paul McCartney (news) as Beatles also honored by the Rock Hall as solo artists.

Harrison's biggest hit, "My Sweet Lord," came in a burst of pent-up creativity following the Beatles' breakup. He recorded infrequently in the decade before his November 2001 cancer death, but a well-received posthumous disc came out in 2002.

Hirsute blues-rockers ZZ Top were an early MTV staple with the boogie hits, "Legs" and "Sharp-Dressed Man," helped by the presence of little-dressed women in their videos.

And they were a ready-made trivia question: the one member of the trio who didn't wear a beard down to his chest was named (Frank) Beard.

Traffic featured teen prodigy organist Steve Winwood (news), who later went on to solo success. The pastoral, jazzy Traffic had hits with "Glad" and "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys."

The Dells, a vocal harmony quintet that hit with "Oh What a Night" in 1955, were the inspiration for the film "The Five Heartbeats." With only one personnel change, a group formed in high school is still performing together more than 50 years later.

Rolling Stone magazine founder Jann Wenner was to receive a lifetime achievement award.

Highlights of the awards ceremony will be shown on VH1 on Sunday.

That's exactly what I thought when I read that.....sounds like someone is a little disillusioned with someone....

I have no idea where they're coming from with that comment either. Some people just see what they want to see and hear what they want to hear... amazing!

If anything, that falls in line with his explanation of why he hadn't signed Larry and Chaka to contracts. He said they were his friends. I don't get disillusionment from that statement.

For all we know, Larry might have never been paid for all those performances. It could be seen that Prince is trying to encourage young artists to get someone LIKE Larry Graham... shivers...

Yeah, that's how it comes across to me.

He states the importance of someone who truly cares, as opposed to someone who is financially dependent.

I think you're misinterpreting it.
I got the impression that he is saying that in FAVOUR of Larry as he is a friend and mentor and not on the payroll like other staff.

The real friend that he's talking about is Jesus Christ. Given the other statements and his new found spiritual basis, that's what he's talking about.

Prince was great last night, and he's taken on such a fatherly vibe lately. After he accepted his award, he turned and stretched his arms for Alicia and Outkast. They all joined in a huge group hug. It was the sweetest thing I've seen in quite awhile.

Everyone at Cleveland's Rock Hall was bobbing his/her head at Prince's performance and even those who came to see the other inductees were struck by Prince's polished show and his sheer star power. It was great to be there.

I too was at the Hall of Fame in Cleveland and it was GREAT! The highlight of the night for me was when Prince joined Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and George Harrison's son on stage to perform "While my guitar gently weeps". First off that is one of my favorite Beatles tunes and to see Prince rock out on the solo while George Harrison's son had a smile from ear to ear watching Prince was just unreal!

I also want to give props to all the Bob Seger fans there last night. You would have thought Bob Seger was actually in Cleveland with as loud as they were! Way to support your favorite artist!

As for who he was talking about with his statement...WHO CARES! Maybe he was talking about an old friend for sale.

BTW< Alicia Keys was HOT last night. Her speech was great and her little laugh was very HOT! I love that woman and think she was the perfect choice to induct him. Outkast on the other hand...um well...I like their music lol

Draw whatever conclusion you like, but I doubt that. He had already made his shout-out to Jehovah. It seems obvious he referring to feelings of betrayal by people who worked for him.
