1986 - 'Hit & Run' tour - 10 dates in the US between (March ~ August), followed by his first major tour dates in Europe and Japan. Whilst Purple Rain had been toured across the US, barely anyone else had had the chance to witness Prince's abilities live and in the flesh. It was also clear that Prince had the record-buying public /concert-goers and the press unanimously on his side when he first hit Europe. 1987 - the decision was taken to tour Europe first, where the show was received very favourably by fans and critics alike, but problems resulted in some later shows having to be cancelled. At the same time, Prince was apparently disappointed with how 'Sign O' The Times' releases were beginning to be received in the US so he changed his mind, abandoned plans for the tour, returned home to work on the concert movie as a replacement for the US tour, and started work on 'Lovesexy'. 1988 - the release of 'Lovesexy' in the US was not received as favourably as anticipated, so the tour began in Europe where Prince's success continued unabated. The extensive US leg of the tour did not sell out, and tour production costs (lavish set) resulted in losses. During the following years, whilst his popularity in Europe and Japan continued to guarantee arena ticket sales and profitable touring, it was only by 1993 that Prince was prepared once again to take a production across the US, but this time taking in smaller venues than the 'Lovesexy' tour. . ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift. | |
