Doesn't it sucks now that everybody seems 2 like prince ? Don't get me wrong, I'm all happy 4 Prince new success and the fact that he's trying 2 make a come back (though he didn't really leave) but doesn't suck now, you see Prince all the time and everybody seems 2 like him ? At first I use 2 think I wanted it this way, you know I wanted the world 2 enjoy the wonderful music coming from a little man I discovered, but now it's like everybody likes him and it's not specail anymore. I love Prince though. I guess this is just a time I have 2 endure.

Yeah but given the amount of shit that some of his hardcore fans , including me, give him dont you think he'll be relieved to get a wider, less obsessive / critical fan base?.

Yeah, i think it's a bit early to start saying that everybody likes prince. As and when he has an album which shifts skips full of copies, then that's got to be true. But all that's changed at the moment is that he's being more open in terms of publicity and showcasing his new music / interpretation of his old music. I'd say at the most, that people are more interested. Proof of the pie's in the eating. I'd say wait until you suddenly find yourself 10 rows further back at the concert before you start worrying about his fanbase expanding exponentially. May not ever happen...

i can't tell! just like thefrog said, it's still too early yet to even know if that's how everybody else feels about 'im. he's only been in the spotlight, in a major way, for about a month and a half or so. best thing you can do is to sit back and watch, cuz i do not see anyone else jumpin around and goin, "omgomgomg, i like prince!" or anything like that. and i live in mpls--the local media's startin to latch on to him now and kiss his butt all because of the hall of fame induction and the whole pr anniversary thing, but other than that? nobody's sayin a gotdamned thing as of yet. hold your horses.

all of this new publicity for prince has gotten my youngest cousin interested in him, which i think is a good thing. She wants to hear some more of his music event though some of the things he does scare her a bit. i told her that he's changed and he's no longer the guy that wears assless pants and humps his guitar and she seemed relieved.
So i guess that all this attention could be a good thing. It won't make everybody like him, but it might create a few new fans and that's not a bad thing.

I can be a Prince expert now . edit [This message was edited Mon Mar 15 7:25:39 2004 by Mizzunderstood]

Only Prince's fans care. He'll pick up a couple of new fans here and there, but its not like the world is sitting around waiting to see what he's doing next. The idea that "it sucks that everyone seems to like him" is pure nonesense. He's a megastar and has been liked by millions for YEARS. Prince hasn't been "underground" since Dirty Mind...maybe a little during the Controversy period. If I'm wrong, check his record sales. Some of y'all need to check the definition of underground.

I don't think its relevant one way or the other. When he's popular, I like him, when he's not, I like him. I could give a crap either way. The only thing better about the popularity is that he makes more TV appearances. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

i actually thought about this topic this morning before i saw this thread, after atleast 3 people who have made fun of prince, or me liking prince came up to me and said they saw an interview and were really impressed, or saw him on leno and said, "wow i forgot how fucking good he is"... they all started asking about the tour and new album... i thought to myself WHAT THE HELL!! but i guess it is what it is... i think all fans of artists that suddenly get blasts of popularity feel that same "BUT I LIKED HIM ALL ALONG!!!" syndrome.
i just can't wait for musicology and seeing him tonight in new york...

Word. It doesn't matter what everyone else says or does. There will always be some people who like him and some who don't. Some in each category will open their mouths and let you know about it. Can't let it impact your life, man!! But on that tip I have the ad for our local show (Omaha) clipped from the paper and posted on the door to my office. I have had several people tell me they want to go- people who I didn't know cared about Prince at all. So yeah, he's penetrating a little bit deeper this time around. Good for him!

Maybe that's happening Stateside, but over here in the UK nothing's changed.Leno isn't a big show here and i don't think Ellen is even on here.
Hopefully when and if he tours Europe and the UK, he can do some of our chatshows. Jonathon Ross, Parkinson and what the heck! maybe even Graham Norton. That would be funny as hell!

I think it's great.
His popularity level has been simmering away for a year or 2 and I think it's ready now. I work for a UK what's on guide and in the last couple of years I've been seeing his name more and more, be it mentioned as a major influence in an artists's bio or as part of a club night's music policy. I've started hearing his music more often when I go out clubbing and radio DJ's keep on sneaking his classics into their shows. There's been the sudden increase in cover versions. There's been an increase in dance bootlegs. Now I've got folk who used to take the mickey borrowing my CD's and telling me I was right all along. How ace is that? Last time he toured, I had to go on my own to see him and now I've already got a date for the gig and he's not even announced his UK dates yet! All this increased media attention means loads of great new TV appearances and lots of attention. Hell, this year it looks like I'm finaly going to be allowed to stick him on the cover of our mag. Of course, if I fail to get tickets because some little swines who only own the greatest hits album bought them, then my attitude will be a whole different storey! Naw, I don't think it sucks. I dig the fact that it's a reminder to those of us who never went anywhere in the first place that Prince is an incredible artist. I may be a cynic and a critic but the moment a tour was announced, I turned into a giddy little bitch.

I am glad that Prince is getting back into the spotlight and as far as people who didn't appreciate his talents and do now? Maybe it's because this younger generation never had anyone to introduce them to real talent and maybe Prince will. Almost everyone, except for a few artist that you can count on one hand can't sing, they can't come up with their own music, they have to sample someone elses music. They don't write or produce. They don't know how to do nothin' and are still making a gold or platinum record and no way in hell can they put on a live show like Prince could. Another thing, as far as Prince getting back in the mainstream and signing with a major record company goes, it's probably because all this stuff he was talking about not believing in contracts and everything else he vowed never to do contracts again wasn't getting him paid. It's great that you want to do things your way, but you got to bend the rules when you have a house and a car note and other things. The thing I am most happy about and I hope it stays this way is that Prince is one of the few black artist from the 80's that is still a respected artist and hasn't gotten all troubled like Whitney, Michael, Diana Ross and all these other artist who once ruled and are still talented and looked upon, but their talent is still overshadowed by all the trouble and media blitz you see on tv. I know he has had a few bumps, but it didn't get tangled into the press like the people I mentioned above. I can't say it won't ever happen to Prince, but so far, with him being an extremely private person over the years and to this day. It has paid off and I am proud of him. Go Prince I ain't mad at cha.

I think that would be up there with Chris Eubank on Mrs Merton! Anyway, isn't Norton based over in NY these days? "You know, you're the classic example of the inverse ratio between the size of the mouth and the size of the brain"

i think it's great he's all over the place. he's a great musician and has old school musical talent that today's lip-synching, 'puter-sequencing kids just don't have. his crack about teaching beyonce a few simple scales was kind of mean, but right on target.

also, if his lyrcis on musicology are as (to put it nicely) confusing as those on TRC....well, the fame may backlash him in the end. we'll see
