BRING YOUR KIDS???

I have two teenagers in my houshold that I am seriously thinking about taking to the concert.
BUT! Can kids today truley appriciate Prince and his band of funk-a-teers? Or do they only
understand baggy pants, a wave cap, and a microphone.
WHAT'S YOUR TAKE ON THIS?
I don't want to waste money on a lost cause!!! sad

wow...i was about your age when i started gettin into p, and i sorta felt the same way. most kids who were my age didn't understand him either, they thought he was just some femmie-guy in high heels and who sang funny. luckily for me nobody gave me crap for it in high school--here i was, everyone else was into crap like green day and snoop dogg while i was the lone prince nerd of my entire class/school....and i wouldnt've wanted it any other way.

woot!

...oh, and to answer the initial thread: i say bring 'em. they may find a few facets in p's music that they can latch on to. nod

I was 18 when the addiction started. Now, I'm 22 and own his entire catalogue and I'm currently in the process of buying all things Prince. If anything, the live performance will either make them get it or it won't. I don't know about other fans, but for me there was one moment, a "Prince-epiphany" if you will, that made me say "I need to buy everything this guy has made" and that was when I heard "If I Was Your Girlfriend". For some of my friends, whom I've converted, it's been showing them scenes from live performances, for others it's been playing them songs they've never heard. It's just a matter of time.

I was the same, the only Prince nerd in the whole school and that's the only thing I was known for lol. Have your kids been to a concert before? if not you should take them, I am sure they will love it.

i was just thinking about starting a thread on this very subject. i say take them!

my 13 year old daughter has recently become interested in old school prince..and i'm lovin it!

when she was younger..i used to listen to prince quite a bit...i exercised and cleaned the house to the more up tempo jams...listened to the slower jams when i was feelin melancholy..or just needed to sit still biggrin

anyway..she says she remembers...she couldn't have been more than 5 or 6..

if the concert in nyc happens before we have to move this summer..i'll definitely be taking her..

i took my niece to see the 88 lovesexy tour...and she was about 15 at the time..

I would definitely take them! I have two kids that I have proudly converted into BIG Prince fans, one 8 and one 10, and they're begging me to take them to the concert next time he comes around my way. For me it would be a dream come true to experience with them what I've loved with a passion since I was merely older than my eldest boy. But I have another kind of problem...I'm worried what they'll get from the experience, I mean; will they even be able to see anything??? I'm thinking the crowd at a concert isn't exactly child friendly unless you're super lucky and get to stand at the first row...will kids that age really experience anything other than staring into the back of some huge mofo in the row in front of them?

My son is six and he digs Prince. But you have teens and that's a whole different situation. I say give it a try. If they like people like Beyonce and Alicia Keys, then I think they could enjoy Prince.

This is really an interesting thread. The different points of view about children let me know that time really has moved on since the first Rick James concerts. My take on it is that I hope Prince decides to do a few outdoor summer festivals in major cities like Chicago's "Taste Of Chicago".
At least people will be able to bring their children and see a great performer for free. Several major acts do these festivals every year and more familys than anything come. Truth is, the promoter really didn't make these concerts "Family Friendly" by setting the price of the tickets so high. Some people can't afford to take their children. confused

Its kinda hard to take my son and my wife when I can only purchase 2 tickets from the npgmusic club. I need good seats to see a concert. If Prince want a family show then he should let families buy the extra ticket!

im 15, and i listened to music like snoop dog, and then mj, but wen i found prince, i instantly loved his music. This was wen i was twelve. I found his music gr8, the way he had so many melodies goin on at once, and the way his songs and albums varied. Modern music doesn't influence me at all, but prince's do. I play guitar, piano, base, and drums, only becos he inspired me. People dont appreciate his music now, becos he has had big breaks, and people forget about him, and people dont bother listenin 2 sumthing new, they dont have open minds., I like prince, jimi hendrix, rhcp, led zepelin, which is quite varied. But kids 2day like the same old stuff. Prince will never die, cos people that undestand music, will always find him, and enjoy his music. cool

im 16, and Chidren like myself lol, change there minds about what type of music they listen, i have always loved 60's 70's and 80's music, and when i heard PRINCE i was hooked, but they mite not enjoy it.

But when u do actully go 2 a concert, the sound of the music, sounds so much better than it does sitting at home listnein 2 it through ur stereo, just the feeling of the music flowing around u, people dancing around u, its an amazing feeling.

Trust me take ur children, no matter if they dont like prince, they will love him live, just that feeling of live music, "real music"

all though i haven't seen prince live yet, but im hoping 2 see him in england 4 the musicolgy tour, but seing other ppl live, its just great.

I'm 14, and I started this wild ride around November when I saw Prince on Direct TV freeview, and the guy is awesome. I still listen to rap, but not that much as everyone else does. I know em all (lil jon, Ludacris, Master P, P. Diddy etc.), but they didn't do it for me, also I listen to MJ a lot, but Prince is just mind blowing, and you gotta appreciate the past before you take in the future so I love what Prince is doin. I say take your teenagers, cause I'm goin when he comes to Atlanta. In fact I'm the one beggin my parents to go...lol At school people make fun of him and everything, but when it comes down to it. Prince is da man! His stuff is "real music!"

I think that is really good advice. And I think that it probably just depends on how well a parent knows his/her child to determine whether or not it's worth bringing them to show against their will. Sometimes kids may not want to do something at any given time, but then later they're glad that they did.

On the one hand, a kid could consider going to a Prince concert torture... but on the other hand, Prince IS a living legend and I can imagine that years down the road, the kid could look back on the experience of actually "being there" and be really appreciative that they had the opportunity to see Prince live and in person.

I say definitely take them!! I took my 10 year old daughter to the Vegas concert at the Aladdin... a year ago?.... and she had the time of her life! She was only into the "hits" at the time, you know, "raspberry beret" and "kiss" and such. But she came away with a new appreciation of music and musicians playing their butts off. She sang "Maceo, blow your horn!" all the way home (a 300+ drive, heehee). wink

As for Elisa's comment about them being able to see or not, take them anyway. I have found people to be rather accomodating when it comes to kids. My girl got the chance to see the mini-show at BB Kings at Universal when Prince and the NPG showed up after seeing the Aladdin Live! concert. I very much appreciate the nice folks who grabbed her hand and pushed her to the beginning of the line and helped me to not get separated from her. LOL Even though she was a bit blocked by the guys eek standing in front of us, she was still able to see Prince and the band.

Take them!! My girl will be going to the LA show with me in a couple of weeks, and she is very, very excited. biggrin

As a person who was seriously against the whole "kid" atmosphere for the celebration & such, I've had to rethink my position. Though I'm still not crazy about being surrounded by little Timmy's & Samantha's, when P mentioned on Tavis (I think) that his audience has grown older w/ him, they have kids now & it's good to expose the kids to real music that made sense to me. Plus attending the Fillmore show & seeing that little girl onstage, knowing this was a moment she'd remember for the rest of her life - that touched me.

So fine, let the little boogers into the shows - nobody wants to babysit them anyway razz Hopefully they will get something amazing out of it - a new respect for real music...
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

she may be too young still to appreciate.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

umm . . . just to set the record straight - I don't do drugs! My nick refers to my hobby - I collect rocks and stones . . . I could appreciate what Prince is saying about introducing our children to REAL music. My kids were totally into Purple Rain - and now that they are teens I guess I would love to share a concert with them - I have no doubt they'd love it. But I would hate to see half an auditorium filled with screaming elementary age kids - I think it would kill it for me . . . I'm not saying that would happen - but its a thought I don't enjoy !
