Does Prince's Newer Music Lack Emotion?

Does Prince's Newer Music Lack Emotion?

Let's go back just 10 years to 1994.
Prince was struggling in to survive in a battle with his arch-nemisis, his bitter rivals, the cause of all his woes - WB
His battle to survive was reflected in his music and in his lifestyle. He publicly appeared with the word "Slave" scribbled on his cheek in eyeliner. You could tell he was hurting. Listen to his music, this was shown here too. "Papa", "Solo" and "Letitgo" from "Come" was full with hurt, hatred and anger. This angst was a theme that continued in his next 2 albums "The Gold Experience" and "Chaos & Disorder", the latter his swansong album for Warners.
But all the while, amongst the hate-driven songs, were the heart felt songs of love. "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World", "Shhh" and "Space" were all songs fueled by Prince's love for his future wife, Matye.
Prince presented such diversity and above all emotion in his music then. But now, just a decade on, his music is comparitivly bland, cold and heartless.
I just hope the rest of "Call My Name" is good biggrin

What are your views on this?
...just another manic monday...

In principle I think this is a personal issue: some may feel him now more than before, others less.
As for me, I also feel a change in emotions in his music. Perhabs I do not like the 90's stuff so much due to the many negative emotions in it (apart from the lack of quality compared to the 80's). His recent music is hard for me to tell. Much of TRC doesn't cut it with me, emotionally and lyrically speaking, but I can't say that his recent music "is comparitivly bland, cold and heartless" and I think many will disagree with that. I can however witness that it is different in emotion than before... and believe that in time it will change again.

I'm not sure about this one. I actually think, watching his performance on the Tonight show for one, his voice was as emotive as ever.

However, it's obviously not as easy to convey deep emotion when you're singing about music "back in the day" than it is when you're singing about personal (or seemingly personal) issues. And if anyone thinks that the musicology issue is deeply personal, then they're tripping.

I think last december was pretty emotional. And although it was a Harrison / Beatles composition, what i've heard of his solo on wmggw sounded deeply emotional.
