Club Black concert review The doors opened around 10:30?, and I got in shortly after. I was lucky enough to stand 2 rows deep, but then I'm a club member and had been there since 6:30, so maybe lucky isn;t the right word.
Anyway, P took the stage at 1:20, and the band launched into a jazz jam that someone said was a Miles Davis number. There was a loose vibe at first, and I got the feeling that several NPG members missed cues for solos. Also, for the first couple of numbers, there were some sound problems that were worked out. "Shhh" followed, and P walked over to the amp to turn up the volume in time to deliver a great solo. "Musicology" came next, and the jam is just funky as hell live. Several older funk jams were scorching, in particluar Controversy and D.M.S.R. For "The Beautiful Ones" P writhed on the floor at the end, just like in the movie, and I'm certain that the women to the left of me, well, let's just say they probably threw out their drawers when they got home. MACEO was in the house, and got a huge cheer when he led the horn section on stage! Candy and Greg were great, and this new saxman, whose name I forget, is a hard be-bopper who tears into that thing! Renato got off some great solos, and Mr. Blackwell was in typically fine form. Chance was fun on the lead vocal of "Soul Man", and Mike Scott was, well, adequate. Rad was not on hand, and an earlier post here mentioned she was let go...I'll leave it at that. Other great moments; Prince having fun at the end of "The Question of U": "Somethin smells funky baby, is it your breath or mine...I had the regular chips, you had them other kind!" "Sign Of the Times' was re-worked again, this time a soulful number remniscent of Stevie Wonder. One of the dancers called onstage during "U got the Look" got a little too close, preventing P from walking across stage during one of his guitar solos...he gave her a funny look and motioned with his arm, as if to say "Get out of here!" As for his outfits, he started in dark suit with overcoat that looked like a variation of what he wore recently on Leno. He changed only once, coming back in a sleevless, form-fitting red frock, with matching pants. His heels lit up red as moved. I'm sure I'm leaving plenty out ..did someone say "Kiss", or "let's work" or "nothing compares 2 U", or "Insatiable" or "The One"? Well, he did them all, and he and the NPG tore the place up! They left the stage a full 2 hours later, about 3:20. Public Service Announcement: "musicology..coming to a city near you!" Eugnj420

I thought your post on the show was very accurate. I was at club black too, and after standing in line and waiting inside for a total of about 5 hrs, the minute he took the stage the wait time was all forgotten. The boy was on FIRE. The band was tight and the hits just kept coming. I was about 2 bodies away from the stage thw whole night...my ears are still ringing. But yo, i'm smiling like hell! Highlights for me, DMSR, Controversy, and the Beautiful Ones.
Oh, and the house was evidently filled with stars...among the attendees was Lenny Kravitz, Anita Baker, Dave Chappelle, Alicia Keys, Andre 3000 and Dave Chapelle. "i don't follow trends...trends they follow me"

Hey, I forgot this highlight I wanted to share with y'all...
Prince and Candy did a duet! He would sing a verse form "The ONe", and she would reply with a verse form Alicia Keys' "Fallin'" Who knew Candy was a soul singer? Hey, anyone think that's Prince's influence?
