Would THE CONTINENTAL have been a hit?

I was listening to THE CONTINENTAL and I truly beleive that if that song was released as the first single from the Symbol album, it would have been a hit. What do you think? It has all the elements of a hit. Could you imagine if the remix thats on Crystal Ball woulda been released as the B side? I beleive that would have been a Huge club hit. I notice that Prince tend to let a lot of songs with "hit" potential slip by. Songs like "Sleep Around", "319", "Adore", "Pheromone", "When U Were Mine", "So Far So Pleased" etc. But do you think that if THE CONTINENTAL was released as a single, would it have been a hit?

It certainly had potential, and it WAS supposed to be released as a single...
but then Prince changed his mind, and moved onto the next thing.

I think "The Continental" ONLY would have been a hit as a lead-off single, since it would be "fresh" Prince. Sometimes songs are hits just because people are glad to hear new product from an artist ( "Theives In The Temple"). As the 3rd, 4th single, ...naw.

I TOTALLY agree with "Sleep Around" over "Betcha By Golly Wow"

"So Far, So, Pleased" (only for the Stefani factor), or even "Baby Knows" over "TGRES": YES!

I don't think any "Come" single would have sold that CD.

To this DAY, I cannot BELIEVE Prince chose "IIWYG" as the lead-off for "SOTT"! He could have sunk and acknowedged classic album right then & there! He shows VERY BAD decisions in his lead-off singles! I hope the same is occuring with "Musicology" eek

confuse IIWYG wasn't the lead off single for SOTT... SOTT was.
IIWYG was the 2nd single, and I agree, much as I love the song, it wasn't immediate
single material. It should have been released as the 3rd or 4th single.

Oops, Sorry.

I remember the IIWYG casette single in my store before the SOTT casette single. cool

I always hear about "Adore" getting radio play in spite of not being a single? Is that true or BS? I can't believe "Adore" would be any more than an appreciated album track, NOT a hit. I can't see men on construction sites grooving to it. cool

I agree with you on this.I didn't really appreciate this song before, but I now see the hit potemntial. This is a fun and funky song that's easy to enjoy. This coulda' def been a club hit.-It's been a while since I dj'd a party, but if that ever happens again I am gonna slam this one fo' sho'.-Actually,Prince should still release this as a one-off single and do it as a maxi w/remixes by several of today's hot producers like Neptunes,Timbaland, get a Chad Hugo take by himself,Kanye West ,Danger Mouse,Kruder and Dorfmeister,Dj Cam,Andre 3000,The Umma, etc.I really do feel that this would be hot.He could really push that in clubs and on dance -oriented radio.Damn! No doubt.

Pheromone is one of his ultra-coolest tracks to me! Something tells me the lyrics would have made regular rotation unlikely-it's a pretty psychotic tale eek
I don't think Prince can succeed commercially without corporate $$$ behind him, and WB was probably efforting "Come" to fail to get the upper hand w/Prince @ that time,& prove a point. Indeed, I think WB just "went thru the motions" with "Letitgo">So, even though Phermone is totally cool, I doubt it would have got a chance to succeed.

Prince's utter inability to choose the correct tracks for singles is near-legendary. There are so many examples throughout his career.
