plus surely a good thign, if his album, albeit a very best of, climbs back up the charts (and from its last week position its been hovering anyway and on the charts for half a year) then more people are clearly getting into him and gearing up for the concerts. plus once an album gets a head of steam it often stays up there too.

i have to say though, this is the first time since getting into prince a couple of years ago i can remember seeing him on the billboard charts apart from NEWS on the net charts!

They should have been doing their job when he was signed to them. Anyway WB has been sold and you are dealing with a new group of people. I bet this does not bother him as much as it use to and he is still getting a nice check.

FutureShock

Warner Bros. didn't actually do much...except keep the "Very Best of Prince" cd on the shelf. What's happenning is that because Prince is making it a point to make himself more accessable to the news and media in general, with the Grammy Performance, TV show apperances, plus the Rock and Roll hall of fame, AND the 20th anniversary of Purple Rain etc., WB probably figured that now would be a good time to increase their distribution of a greatest hits cd. And casual fans who remember Prince from back in the day are probably saying "yeah... I forgot about all those great songs Prince wrote" and then pick up the cd.

What difference does it make? It was Prince's fault things went sour, not WB. He knew what he was getting himself into when he signed on the dotted line, yet again. It's not WB's fault if Prince is crazy.

Well let see. Diamonds and Pearls sold about 5 million copies. No matter what you think about this cd is was very popular and promoted well. The follow-up the Symbol cd was even better if you are talking about radio friendly music.

WB dropped the ball on this CD and somewhere between Diamonds and Pearls and things went terriblily wrong.

If you do a little reserch you will find that WB has been in decline for the last 10 years. It was sold because it was losing money. Not saying Prince was all right but I don't think some of the things he has said about the label are not valid. He just did not handle the problems in a mature manner.

Dude, you sound like Rick James: "I didn't go draggin' my feet around on the couch, give me a break...yeah I dragged my feet on that couch."

If D&P sold well (which it did) and was promoted well (as you correctly allege) then that goes both ways...or are you saying that WB didn't promote D&P well? Or the symbol album? They were both HEAVILY promoted, actually...and if he had "played the game" he could have sold millions more records...but he didn't, which is cool too. But to act like WB is some horrible institution and is entirely to blame is boolsheet.

Do corporations suck? Hell yeah. Do record companies suck? Hell yeah. Did Prince make MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of dollars through his contract with WB? Hell yeah. Is he making MILLIONS off of The Very Best of Prince right now? Hell yeah.

Prince is the one who changed his name to a symbol...THAT'S what caused the rapid decline in record sales in the mid 90's, more than anything else.
