On The Ellen DeGeneres Show during "Kiss" he hit TWO sour notes during the first verse! Granted no one sings falsetto like Prince did in the 80s, but he'd never hit sour notes like that! I'm not saying he didn't know his voice failed him, but, damn, time's marchin' on!

And what about singing "I Feel For You" in his baritone range... with whoever that woman was singing backup doubling on the range he used to sing it in...??

I hope he knows when to quit and doesn't become another modern day David Lee Roth disaster.

Whatever. The fact is Prince has never sung as well as he does nowadays. Listen to Reflection on the Tavis show...amazing vocal performance. If you had attended any of the shows of the ONA Tour, you would have been stuned by the vocal performances. He was absolutely incredible. I have seen all the tours since 1986, and yes he is at the peak of his powers in terms of voice. That's the first thing that strikes you when you see him nowadays in concerts. Before he was an Ok singer with a very interesting voice. He is using now all the potential of it.

And I'm not some kind of "Prince can do-no-wrong" before you start going into this.

I missed the degeneres show so I can't comment on that. I did see the ona dvd and am surprised no one talks about how perfect his voice sounds in it. I have stated that, based on what I saw on the dvd, Prince went from just a very good singer to joining the class of the elites. I always held him below the Vandross's and Cooke's but with what I saw on this concert which is just over a year old, he is now in that class.
The voice is not like any other instrument, it is a part of your body, and any body has good days and bad days. Voice is very delicate and influenced by everything you do, from what you breathe, eate, drink to how much and how you speak, something minor can ruin your voice for a few days. Believe me I am a singer, nowhere near prince, but enough to know how fragile and inconsistent a voice can be. It's no like a guitar that you put in a case when you're done and take out again when you need it. It is a part that the musician uses for multiple functions.

Prince has been hitting bum notes on live renditions of Kiss for years. Nothing new there. It's a damn hard song to sing in falsetto all the way through.

is this clown serious?

Prince's voice has never been better!

everyone hits sour notes now and then, could have had soemthing to do with the monitoring, the day, what he ate, drank, the humidity in the studio, time of day... the voice is very sensative and you're an idiot.

can't wait for musicology!

His voice also cracks on the beginning of "Erotic City" in the "Lovesexy 88" concert video. I've been singing most of my life, and I have to say it happens to just about everyone now and then, regardless of age.

Of course, I don't think Mutiny04 is actually trying to have a serious discussion about this. I think he's just trying to upset people. Best to ignore his posts in the future.

I've been blessed to perform with some real talents, in my short time. Lemme tell ya: Even serious singers miss notes. It's no big deal. In fact, it makes a vocal lightweight like me breathe a little easier.

why do people retort to cussing when their hero get's criticized? i don't get it. discuss, just don't disrespect. is that so hard? you people make fun of mj fans for being crazy and too die-hard, but orgers are just as sensitive when it comes to prince-criticism.
i think prince's voice on the ano dvd is in very good condition. he doesn't have that rawness from back in the day, but it's cool. though his last performances do make me think he is losing the best of his voice. maybe i'm wrong, but i'm not adverse to this here statement.

Without reading everything written after the opening remarks, I'd still like to add my two cents. I don't think that Prince is loosing his voice; I think his voice is maturing like evey normal human beings does. BUT I will say this: I do NOT think that Prince does vocal warm ups before he takes the stage and HE REALLY SHOULD. I found his voice getting better and more steady as the Ellen performance went on. I think he just may have been a little nervous and not warmed up. At least he doesn't start off all Phlegmy like the Late Great Dr. Nina Simone. But then again.... Prince is still young. Picture it...Prince at 70. He takes the stage, hocks up a loogie..."I never meant to cause you any sorrow..." lol.
My name is Prince evilking and I want your money

To whoever thinks Prince is losing his falsetto,

If you have not seen the ona dvd please do. In it he has a performance of Gotta Broken Heart Again that will blow you away. His range on it is way higher than his normal flasetto voice and he has the audience on it's feet with this performance which is one of the best I've seen from anyone, ever. I was open mouthed just watching this a month ago for the first time, shaking my head in disbelief. Truly awesome. In fact I think I'll watch it right now. If you listen to this your question will be answered.

The funny thing is he hardly ever sings that high ina live performance. Looking back on most of the live stuff I have and have heard, it wasn't that high.

I was actually surprised when he started singing. I said to my wife, "he never sings that high live"

I deleted the recording from my TiVo, but they play repeats of Ellen on Oxygen. Iwill try to catch it again and pay more attention.

That's what I mean. Prince usually doesn't sing that high live because it is difficult to do and lends more credence to the fact that he is better than ever.

Like any other performer out there, there have always been occasions where Prince's voice hasn't quite been perfect.

On the numerous occasions where I've seen him live, I've pretty much always heard him sing a duff note here and there. And I've pretty much always thought that his live renditions of the song Diamonds and Pearls have been a little less than great. Mind you, a lot of that could be because Rosie G's voice has always over-powered his during that song.

It's called being human and it's not that often that imperfections are recorded and shown on TV and that's why it's probably been noticed now.

It's true that as people get older, their voice gets a little less strong (listen to Tom Jones perform), but at a mere 45 years old, I think Prince has got a long way to go before his voice shows a noticeable difference in quality. As for the odd duff note - well thank goodness he's human and makes mistakes.

My biggest question is just the opposite, How does he sing so well so consistently. As a singer there are few times when my voice is in really good form, about 90 percent of the time it's not, due to just everyday living. My question is how does he maintain the consistency that he does. No, he's not perfect every time out but he's always competent. \
Another thing is, his great voice has a tremendous range which may explain why he doesn't always sound great. You see, I notice with my voice the more things I do the less well I do them all. So when you have to juggle the different styles, they each take away from the other. His deep voice affects his falsetto etc..

Anxiety

Yeah, ol' boy can't squeal and screech like he used to.

Interestingly, however, ol' boy can still squeal and screech.

Meanwhile, consider the dulcet tones of Madonna, whose voice sounds worse than ever.

Or consider Mr. Elton John, who can't even pretend to sing falsetto on "Crocodile Rock" anymore, and sounds pathetic and horrible when he tries to get away with singing the chorus in his lower register.

Things could be far, FAR worse.

I think his voice sounds great. Of all the things one could razz on Prince about, this ain't one of 'em.

Make much of time!

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles today
Tomorrow will be dying.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the Sun,
The higher he's a-getting
The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he's to setting.

That age is best which is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer;
But being spent, the worse and worst
Time's still succeed the former.

Then be not coy, but use your time,
and while ye may, go marry;
For having lost just once your prime,
You may for ever tarry.
