Musicology is a stinker and will flop.

I'm not a hater. I loved The Rainbow Children and One Nite Alone. And on a good day, I can even find myself partial to N.E.W.S. but the two new tracks leaked from the album are both seriously dull, with absolutely no hit potential whatsoever.

If Prince seriously thinks that a song all about how much better music was "back in the day" has any chance of re-connecting him to the youth of today then he really has finally lost the plot.

Musically, it's merely a less interesting version of The Work with bad lyrics. Commercially, if he's hoping to have a hit album on the strength of this drivel, then yet again, he's going to be very disappointed.

Why does the guy keep shooting himself in the foot? I guess this is what happens when you no longer have anyone else to answer to... no-one to tell you that what you're recording is a pile of shit...

It defeinitely wont be a financial flop for him.

I can't say whether 'Musicology' will be a flop in terms of mainstream success. The promotion he's doing will definitely expose his music to a bigger audience- which is what he wants. And he's already proving he can still sell out out arenas.

But i tell you this; if it doesn't go to the top of the charts it wont be because the public can't relate to the lyrics. No one but prince fans will give a damn about lyrics. If people like the groove they'll buy the song.

I think you should take a wait and see attitude. Listen to entire album first. Also, you can't speak for the entire population, if you could you would be the richest person on earth because you could always predict what the population wants and propduce it. Since you know what song would be a hit, produce it for Prince and send it to him. wink

I like Musicology and I have high hopes for it, but it suffers from something dire, most obviously seen on the album New Power Soul: it is a song about music. I don't want to hear songs (music) about music itself. How does that relate to my life? It doesn't! It just suggests that Prince doesn't have a life outside music, and well, not being a musician myself, there's nothing to connect to there.

Not to answer for Sly, but Musicology can definitely make it to the top of the charts. If the album is good then Prince just needs to play the music industry and market in the right steps with the right timing.. whether he and his doers have the business sense to do that is questionable.

who cares about Musicology going to the top of the charts? If Prince dont why should we. Look at whats at the top of the charts..BS!!! so does it mean because they're at #1 it is good music? HELL NO! when will people stop thinking that Billboard chart rankings are the end all and be all of everything.

I heard Musicology on Jay Leno and my first thought was that it sounded like Prettyman. It's alright, although a bit on the instantly forgettable side.

I liked the bit with the tiny girl and the huge, overweight man dancing, though. biggrin

Mebbe 'cause it reminded me of the Race video where Michael Bland is dancing right behind Prince. It made Prince look really small. biggrin

Or was it... it made Michael Bland look really huge. You could fit ten Princes in there. biggrin

It could be a real possibility that Prince has absolutely no idea how to come up with hit songs anymore. His creativity may really be bone dry right now.

Juize

All I can say it has to do with the two and four...Everlasting Now was a hit, The Work was a hit, Family Name was a hit...I tell they could have been hits... deep stuff but they rocked...and as always the ballad is the choice....that is just his way of losing it .... the ballads....

Just my opinion the song that'll last needs chorus and it has to flow and the drums have to pound and of course it needs some sex... at least the feel of it....To me that is Soul ....

"I have to sides and they are both friends, don't try to clock them their much too fast...."

It's all about visibility, and this time around he's doin' stuff right. Even if this album IS a stinker (which I don't think it will be), then he's back in the public eye, ready to drop the next CD . . .

I'm starting to believe this too . . . I mean, I know that Prince is an excellent singer and musician, but I think he's done SO much awesome work that it's just not in him anymore.

I'm wondering (and I have wondered this before) how much actual influence his band members had on him before the NPG. The Revolution, SOTT, and Lovesexy bands just seemed to bring more to the table, musically. What we often credit to Prince (the man) I'm sure was more a collaborative effort . ..

i think the song could be an adult contemporary hit and maybe a minor radio hit if he plays the payola game. oh, wait, these days they're called 'indie reps'.

as for his recent writing abilities...trc was great, i thought. reflection and what do u want me 2 do are also great tracks. very few people can write earth shattering or groundbreaking music for 25 years and more. the fact that he still creates music that really is above the standard level of creativity and, sometimes, is actually quite brilliant shows that he still has something. it is kind of difficult for someone to make music that is comparable to when they were 'still hungry' after they've been a millionaire success for 15-20 years.

If you feel that a lot of songs doesn't have music in it nowadays, just one continuous loop, then that's what you can relate to. There aren't many people who have bands in R&B, Soul, Funk. Instruments aren't used any more. Especially horns.

I totally dig where he's coming from. You used to have groups like Earth, Wind and Fire and Parliment/Funkadelic who had horn sections. And vocal arrangements. There are no more harmonies, let alone 4 part harmonies.

Maybe, just maybe, he has no DESIRE to come up with HIT SONGS anymore.
(been there, done that)

He's not holding a gun to anyone's head and forcing them to buy his material.
Maybe, just maybe, he just wants to do...what he wants to do. Take it or leave it.

One obvious example is Miles Davis.

The Birth of the Cool - 1950 (20s)

Kind of Blue - 1959 (30s)

Bitches Brew - 1969 (40s)

Each album represents an innovative shift in Jazz.
(cool, modal, fusion)

It can happen.

I think there is a purpose for all these TV appearance, an album, a tour, etc. Don't you think Prince wants it to sell well, and ultimately to top the charts? Just because the music currently at the top of the charts is BS doesn't mean that Prince's real music can't get up there too. That's the idea of musicology, to get some real music out there are properly heard.

Paul McCartney's latest works (in the past 10 years or so) haven't been all that great either. Sure, he's got a great voice, great guitar work and piano. But let's face it, it's not The Beatles stuff - and he probably knows that too, but he keeps writing and playing!

Same thing with Prince, same thing with Stevie Wonder (he put out some crap in the late 80's).

I'm thinking that NO ONE can sustain excellent songwriting, Prince included. But let's hope that he keeps touring and putting out music, because I like even his WORST stuff, to some degree.

I like the song and Reflection is good also. Don't know the other tunes on the album but all this PROMOTION is DEFINITELY GOOD for PRINCe. If he is Gonna Sell and Make a Comeback well This would be the Year with Purple Rain being 20 years ago and Remember it was 84 and 85 that Purple Rain Hit! Prince has this year and Next to Really Score. I think it's TREMENDOUS actually. I wish him Luck.

i tend to agree with this type of thinking, i never get excited for a prince album these days anyway, we all know what a prince album will bring, one good track, one decent track, 2 weak tracks and then pure trash, but still, my ignorant ass will be the first on line
