Should Prince revisit Punk Rock?

Been listening to songs like "Ronnie Talk to Russia" and "Partyup" a lot lately. His Dirty Mind punk rock era was great! The greasy minimalist production, in yo face attitude and 'The Clash' style political content. Going on to name the band 'the Revolution' made sense. That was potent fight music!

Since Prince is going on the road with his Musicology tutorial, I think he should include Punk Rock as one of the subjects. He has done piano medleys and acoustic sets before, I would like to see a punk rock set. What do ya think? He could set up a small side stage (like 'the Stones'and U2) where he would play accompanied by just a bass player, drummer and keyboard player.

Unleash anarchy in them concert halls!

no, he shouldn't.

that's right--me, being the super-staunch supporter of the dirty mind album/era that i am, say no. things like that you do at least once in your lifetime, and it was right on for him at that point in time when he did stuff like "partyup" and "ronnie, talk to russia". but what would be the point of him doin it over again? it'd be awkward.

You are right, usually punk rock is a young man's game, but Prince seems to transcend age. I think he could pull it off. Besides, the Musicology tour sounds like it is going to be a big retrospective of sorts. It could work in that setting.

Nah, it's not his speed anymore. I thought ONA was a pretty dark and ranty tour, but he used jazz to get his points across more than he used a punk sound. I think the rawer sounding stuff was just where his head was at when he was younger, and he'd look silly doing it now.

The word musicology implies the appreciation of music in all its forms. I am just suggesting a short set in the middle of the concert as a nod to all the fans who like the early stuff but weren't around to catch it the first time. I am not suggesting he bring back the trenchcoat, black bikini underwear and shit. Now that would be silly!

A little in that vein... I liked it when The Paisley Park Power Trio had a sorta set within the set at the aftershows on the Act II tour, playing stuff offa The Undertaker and such.

So a Punk Rock section? Sure I'd like that. But I sincerely doubt that Prince would play Jack U Off, Horny Toad, Sister, Tick Tick Bang or any other of those old rockers anymore. Because of the lyrics. biggrin

i think prince's music is missing a bit of that experimentation white man punk sound....stop with the boundries man...beautiful art comes from a limitless mind.....prince's music has been lacking that spontaniaity (sic?)....

Prince said on Jay Leno that he was going to play older material in a completely new way. He could do hits from other eras in a punk rock fashion too. I once heard a really heavy version of Raspberry Beret by a band that consisted of the late Warren Zevon & members of R.E.M. That was smokin'!!!

I think the fun days of Prince are long gone. He's all about family fun and old-man jazz garbage. In other words, he'll be forever boring.

Technically, you are right. New Wave was a hybrid of Punk and Disco. I just like to think of Prince's Dirty Mind/Controversy era as more Punk than Disco. When I think of New Wave I think of shitty bands like Spandau Ballet, Style Council, and The Knack. Prince's music was never as disposable as that.

Style Council??? disbelief Just goes to show everybody's got their own thang. Those three bands are completely different to me, and last was quite disposable (one album).

When you're right , you're right! That was a big time generalization I just made. oops!
I really didn't want to get into that kind of genre based arguement anyway. I just want to go to a Prince concert here some RAWK in the middle of all that funk and jazz!

????

Go back to the Dirty Mind era without a second guitar-player ????
What are you thinking???? He couldn't do it live without Dez ....

Two guitars are essential to this era!!!!
And he needs two keyboard-players too.

It's only wishful thinking ... going back the to best prince-era: Dirty Mind - Controversy ....
Face it ... he's 20 years too old to have such an impact!!
