Its a great album. Binary?! I'm sorry, but... Following Emancipation and The Truth I had no particular expectations for NPS. Still, hearing it for the first time and being 3 quarters through it, my thought was: "This is definitely THE most boring Prince album I have ever heard!" Unlike Controversy and The Black Album which showed SOME originality, NPS is a very bland album that is derivative of Prince's own past work. The choice of The One as first "single"/video says it all - like BBGW!, it was just another attempt at recreating the success of TMBGITW. And I really don't like the lyrics of The One. They reflect Prince's own arrogance. I think the song would have been more succesful had it been "YOU are the one", just like TGRES - another TMBGITW rip-off - might have been more succesful had the lyric gone "so this is where WE end" or even "I end" rather than "YOU end and you and I begin." The One is the only track I ever liked on that album but I will go back and listen to Come On and Wasted Kisses again. The One is far and away the best track on NPS. After that, Come On and Mad Sex. | |
