Don't you have to pay to be able to use 'Usenet'?

Not if your ISP carries usenet (which most do).

I do use a paid service (Easynews) - but you get what pay for, and $10 isn't really anything.

Revolution75 - If you've never used a newsgroup (one of the oldest forms of internet communication) - I recommend familiarising yourself with it.

The prince newsgroup is quite active (alt.music.prince) and the binaries group (alt.binaries.music.prince) has been fantastic recently for getting the latest performances.

I use Easynews (the server) and Xnews (the software) - but Outlook Express works with newsgroups.

If one is really that clueless about the internet (and let's face it, anyone here managed to register for this message board, and learned how to post on it too) - then Direct Connect is your next best bet, the prince hub is great.

Is there a "newsgroups for dummies" type of faq or something? All I want to do is be able to get stuff on and off abmp, I've wanted to for YEARS, and I'm pretty computer savvy....I just don't know what to do.

Well, maybe I come speak from experience, but there's really nothing mysterious about newsgroups.

I first got on the internet in 1997, so I guess newsgroups were a little more prominent then, but they're easy as pie really.

Google up a newsgroup FAQ there are tons.

Newsgroups are like message boards with email - you send an email, but instead of it going to one person, it goes to the group, so everyone can see it - reply to a post, and it becomes a thread, just like on a message board like this.

Binaries groups are a little different. (And believe me, I'm no expert) - Binaries (non-text files like videos and mp3s) are posted as attachments (like email attatchments) - and need to be decoded. There is a file-size limit to newsgroup posts, so when people post files like videos and mp3s, they do so split into several posts, often several hundred posts - a good standard program will collect all these posts into one thread, so you can download them.

They are often encoded, like mpgs and mp3s are, and to encode and decode them from their separate posts back to one original file, you use a news reader that is capable of doing so (like Xnews) - Outlook isn't so good at doing this.

A quick search on Google will give you a FAQ, and a quick download at download.com of a newsreader like Xnews will give you the software. Then just configure the software with the address of your news server - either a paid service like Easy News (paid services general archive posts longer than free servers) or use your ISP's news server - get the address from your ISP, will be on their website somewhere.

No mystery, just not part of the WWW - so maybe a little foreign to internet users who have only experience the internet as web-pages. smile

It is complicated for the average PC user. Paid entry, file encryption, sometimes having to merge files together... I don't understand why abmp members lock up access to files through that newsgroup when there are so many other places to host files more publicly, and that wouldn't cost other org and Housequake members $$ to get to them. Secret society mentality perhaps?

Housequake is too busy right now so I couldn't access the FAQ. But if someone can share the link to that, it'd be great!

Please don't post the full url all over the place like the previous time.

Not the best of quality, but it gives an impression.
