'I hate U' is one of my fave Prince tracks and it is supposed 2 be composed by Prince with The NPG (according to the maxi-single).

On Mary J. Blige's "The Love I Never Had", they uses the same beats as Prince does at the end of the Chorus, but that song is supposed to be written by Jam, Lewis, Wright and Blige. No sample is mentioned !

Since Jam & Lewis is credited I wondered if this was a P / Jam & Lewis collaboration.

Have anyone else noticed the similarities ?

As far as I know Prince wrote " Hate U." As far as the "sampling" is concerned, maybe it was just a Minneapolis thing where they were channeling the same inspiration of music.

I like the song, but knowing that Witness 4 The Prosecution is out there somewhere, I can't fully appreciate the "courtroom" scenario as being original in I Hate U . . .

Jam and Lewis have made a lucrative career out of imitating prince. They are very talented but they steal alot form Prince. Listen to janets early music and you'll hear alot of prince touches. Listed to Escapade and then listen to Prince's I could never take the place of your man. They are similar. They acknowledge the impact prince made quite openly in interviews. Therefore I doubt that prince stole it from them.

You are dead on! IF you listen closely that entire album sounds as if it is coming from one sample or another. If you take a song change a few notes and play in a different arrangement it is not a sample and requires no clearance. The influence in there.

You´re right, they ARE great musicians, I love what they did with Alexander O ´Neal and the SOS Band but they do steal a lot....and I think Prince sometimes "borrowed" some beats or melodies from them, so it´s kind of mutual but Jimmy Jam and Terry stole more from Prince than the other way around. Listen to Possessed by Prince, especially the version from the movie Purple Rain, the scene where Morris and Appolonia drink together and Prince plays Beautiful Ones, you can hear the beat of Possessed and it sounds very much like You Can Be Mine off Janet´s Control album. And I think it´s obvious that they stole that beat from I Hate U as well. Mary J´s song came out a bit late though, cause as far as I remember that song was talked about and parts of the lyrics were mentioned in a VIBE interview and article waaay BEFORE that song came out. It was sort of an outtake of her previous album.
But to keep it short...this time THEY borrowed blatantly from Prince.

i remember from an interview that Sonny T and either Michael B, Tommy Barbarella or Morris Hayes came up with a big part of this song when walked out. when he came back the song was almost finished.

I remember that during the Nude tour the band played part of Janet Jacksons "What have you done for me lately" and Prince asked several times "Who wrote that?". I always thought that was a comment on Jam and Lewis "borrowing" things musically from Prince.

Hate U was written by and the NPG. The Mary J Blige track completely rips it off. In fact, many critics pointed out the similarities upon the release of the Mary J Blige track.

A local musician here in Seattle, WA actually sued Prince, claiming he wrote ‘I Hate U’. I kid you not. From what I remember he claims that he sent a demo to Prince and some how or other it turned into I Hate U. I’m pretty sure this went to court here in Seattle. I haven’t spoken to the musician guy in years, so I don’t know how it all panned out. It was kept on the hush tip for whatever reason.

Prince even had his sister try to claim this (it was thrown out of court, since it was fairly well established that the sister wasn't speaking to P when the songs were written!)

The jackson's and Prince have always had a rivalry/dislike for each other. The story about making them promise not to make janet sound like Prince is true. Prince/Michael are each other's nemisis' always have been always will be even though they are both not important inside the business anymore.
