Kanye West CD better than Rainbow Children?

Rolling Stone magazine gave RAINBOW CHILDREN 2 stars but gave Kanye CD 3???Am I missing something???? I mean GET REAL NOW!!

Kanye is the rapper that sped up Chaka Khans THROUGH THE FIRE and added it to his rap song

I don't think anyone really places any credence in Rolling Stone reviews anymore.

Exactly. Check out the reviews of Britney's recent albums -- they've rated higher than The Rainbow Children too. They're all about selling records, not objectively reviewing them.

Well, Rolling Stone record reviews are one person's (usually ridiculous) opinion. Forget about them.

But Kanye West's album is excellent, in my opinion. Even if you're not feeling his production style on the singles, you should check out the LP as a whole. His lyrical approach and content are very refreshing, humorous, insightful. Highly recommended.

I think Rolling Stone wasn't wrong to give Rainbow Children 2 stars. Think about it, who, other than a serious Prince diehard, even knew about Rainbow Children? And would you recommend it to the casual listener who has been out of touch with Prince for the last ten years? It's sad to say but Prince is now a fringe artist. Hopefully with Musicology he will get at least a little bit back into the mainstream.

well Im not a person that feels that a artist needs to break their neck to go into the mainstream. Fuck the mainstream. As for Rainbow Children getting 2 stars, well thats your opinion. TRC is next to SOTT as his best work in my opinion. I give it at least 4 outta 5 stars. So to each his own. Im so glad that Prince beleives in HIS MUSIC and not like a lotta of his "fans" that feel that his #1 priority should be appealing to the mainstream at any cost neutral

I didn't mean to say that Rainbow Children is a bad album. I meant that I don't think the average music fan, who is not a Prince fan, would not enjoy it. It's kind of an album you have to be a fan to dig it. I also don't think Prince should bother with the mainstream. I think he's fighting a losing battle if he thinks he can be a big commercial artist again. But maybe I'm wrong.

of course the avg music fan wont like TRC or most of Prince's music. #1 avg music fans are way too fickle and too non-musical to understand REAL music. They wouldnt know what to look for musically in a song. Most of todays youth DEFINITELY dont know what good music is. I dont think Prince ever intended to be a commercial artist. Prince's focus is on the music not ALL style and NO substance like is what is required to be a hit in todays music arena

All Kanye West does is sample old soul songs. If people think that makes him talented then I guess a artist like Prince has no chance in the music industry.

Exactly laurarichardson..Im not a fan of rap so I dont care one way or another about Kanye West but it all goes back to the state of music today. To say that Kanye West CD and Britney Spears CD is better than TRC truly shows that all logitics concerning music has been lost. Think about it, could Purple Rain come out in 2004 and still have the impact it had? It never would be appreciated because its over the heads of the avg (non) music listener

I'd personally rate TRC 3/5 stars.

One star lost because of the narrative voice not being separate segues you could skip like in TGE, and another star lost because I don't personally like some of the mellow jazzy songs on it like Rainbow Children or Mellow.

I also don't like outdated JB clones like The Work, but once I heard good-great songs like 1+1+1=3, Family Name, Sensual Everafter, She Loves Me 4 Me, Digital Garden, and Last December, I realized I was hearing a quality album.

I have to call you on the above statement. To compare Purple Rain and the Rainbow Children is ludicrous. Purple Rain is probably the most pop album Prince has ever released. I don't know what to call Rainbow Children but pop it ain't! Think about it like this, if Rainbow Children was released 20 years ago would it have had the impact of Purple Rain? Well, I can't say for sure but I doubt it.

A bit of an oversimplification of Kanye's album. Makes me wonder if you've heard the entire album? That's like saying "all Prince sings about is sex!"

Anyway, I think it's a bit silly to try and compare such disparate works. Who cares what Rolling Stone thinks? If I remember correctly , they weren't that impressed with SOTT when it first came out. Listen to what you like f*ck what anybody else says. IMHO.

Couldnt have said it better myself... this album is what renewed my faith in hip hop.. But comparing the 2 records is really kind of dumb isnt it? I do like Rainbow Children but I like Tupac's Me Against the World a hell of a lot more..?? So what does that have to do with how I would rate Rainbow Children?

But Kanyes album is a classic in my opnion.. Although I like the bootlegged version a lot better.. All Falls Down with Layrn (a racist crackhead) Hill is so much better than the Syleena Johnson version...

now I do remember ME AGAINST THE WORLD and that is a classic..but that being better than TRC?? I musta got the copy of TRC that everyone else didnt get. I dont understand all this bashing of that CD or Prince in general lately on this board. I had given up on Prince after the NPS debacle and TRC was what got me back into him. I remember buying it and listening to it like WOW! It reminded me of the first time I heard Dirty Mind in 9th grade..I was like WHOA!! TRC is one of Prince's finest hours in my opinion.

Okay, I was misunderstood.. I love Rainbow Children I was just making a point... TRC is not the best cd ever released.. The person who originally started this thread was comparing apples to oranges.. TRC is a good cd.. but you cant compare it to Kanye's well maybe except Jesus Walks which is a great track.. I am a huge fan of what Prince is doing lately.. I love NEWS.. But you cant compare it to hip hop.. Plus.. different people reviewed each album..

And besides who gives a shit what other people think about Prince.. We love him.. thats all that matters..

Thank God. Someone else on this board has the balls to admit that the state of the music industry does not allow artist to do anything but sample the same old tunes over and over again.

A Cd like Purple Rain would never get put out today and if it did it would not be appreciated.
We are not going to see artist like Prince for a long time.

I have heard two songs from it and that is enough for me. I am more interested in finding out who he sampled from. To me when the only thing you think about is who this artist ripped off.
I don't know does'nt say much about Kayne West.

By the way I would say that 70% of Prince's song have been about sex.

I agree when u said that u r more interested in the song being sampled. When I first heard Kanye West song, the first thing I thought was let me go get Chaka old CD. Till this day, I couldnt tell u one of Kanye's lyric. All I know is he got Chaka on it!!
