(been there, done that) He's not holding a gun to anyone's head and forcing them to buy his material. Maybe, just maybe, he just wants to do...what he wants to do. Take it or leave it. That's all well and good. But if he wants to continue the business of selling records (which he does cuz he's not giving this music for free) then he needs to think about releasing music that people want to hear. Hell, I could make an album of just me banging piano keys with a dead fish because I love the sound, but I know damn well no one's gonna pay $13.99 for it. Prince can lock himself in a studio and produce what he likes til he's blue in the face, but like Billy said, "This is a business." Some are able to maintain artistic highs throughout their later years, like Miles Davis and Johnny Cash, but they're more like exceptions to the rule imo.
These days, Prince is doing music that he wants to hear, and that's great, but it doesn't make for many happy fans. Personally, I wish he'd return more to the type of music that made him a legend in the first place (the kind that revolutionized music as we know it today), and just slowly record a great album over a two or three year period. That'd be better than just pleasing himself with these annual albums full of a few good/great songs and tons of forgettable ones. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I don't want to hear songs (music) about music itself. How does that relate to my life? It doesn't! It just suggests that Prince doesn't have a life outside music, and well, not being a musician myself, there's nothing to connect to there.
I can understand where you're coming from, but personally I LOOOVE songs about music...just like I love books about writing, poems about poetry, movies about making movies... Maybe it's because I was a musician for most of the first 25 years of my life. I dunno. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

You know, I decided a while ago that anything Prince releases from now on is just gravy to me. In my life, Prince already had his money shot and delivered the full frontal goods a long time ago, and everything else is afterglow. I'm interested to hear the new album, just like I am with any new material he puts out. Sometimes I don't get into it at first, and later on I'll rediscover it. Sometimes his stuff is DOA with me. But ya know what, it is what it is, and if I don't like the Musicology album, I have a shitload of other stuff from which to choose. So, eh, like whatever - I'm having fun with what the man's doing this year, and fun's what it's all about, right?

Well, DUH. Did you really think it was gonna be better than something from 94-95, one of his fiercest, most productive periods? The live version on Leno had me hootin' and hollerin'...anyone who thinks it's gonna be a hit needs an adjustment of their meds, or should be commended for their positivity in defiance of realism. Since you so sure he hasn't got it in him anymore, why don't you take up the slack and produce a hit, and see how many people buy it!! Could you even give it away?

Yeah man, it seems that most folks around here have expectations SO HIGH that ANYTHING our little man delivers will disappoint, even if it would be the best stuff he ever recorded. Do as Anxiety says and just take every new tour and album for what it is and enjoy the parts you like. Life is all about having fun, so enjoy Prince for all the good stuff he delivers instead of feeling disappointed because he doesn't live up to your expectations. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

According to your posts, you've said every show and recorded work since approx '97 has been less than stellar: "Everything after '97 was either so-so, or really shitty." "I enjoyed most of The Truth and Emancipation, but that was the end of descent stuff for me." But from a purely "business" perspective, I haven't seen any news of him having trouble staying IN business. That must mean that there are quite a few people happily supporting his business exactly the way he's been running it. The problem you have with his current musical direction is a totally different issue. Hell, I could make an album of just me banging piano keys with a dead fish because I love the sound, but I know damn well no one's gonna pay $13.99 for it.
You can bet the farm on that. However if you are a true artist and that's what you've been inspired to do, you should by all means go for it. Your example's weakness is that YOU do not have the reputation of Prince. A better question would be if Prince made an album of him "banging piano keys with a dead fish" (or more to the point you're trying to make, music that does not appeal to YOU) would anyone pay $13.99 for it. It seems that enough people have. Prince can lock himself in a studio and produce what he likes til he's blue in the face, but like Billy said, "This is a business."
That exactly what a true artist/musician should do and if it doesn't sell, so be it. Prince was such a big "pop star" at one point, now it seems that he's more concerned with being perceived as a "artist/musician". You've also said "...a good show is giving the audience what they want...". IMHO, that's what you get from a "pop star". I personally wouldn't expect that from an "artist/musician". It sounds as if some folks (not necessarily you) are yearning for Prince the pop star. The "Pop Life" is history. ("Dig it") He's not concerned with being risque lyrically or performance wise any longer. He's not giving up anymore "Head". Is it wrong to voice your opinions about these decisions? No. Will it have any bearing on altering these choices? Probably not. The only real option you have is to vote with your feet and your wallets/purses. Look, nobody's curing cancer here, it's just entertainment and a major component of entertainment should be about having fun. Like Anxiety said "I'm having fun with what the man's doing this year, and fun's what it's all about, right?" Sorry for the long ramble. Just my .02 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

One obvious example is Miles Davis. The Birth of the Cool - 1950 (20s) Kind of Blue - 1959 (30s) Bitches Brew - 1969 (40s) Each album represents an innovative shift in Jazz. (cool, modal, fusion) It can happen. Right on!

While I'm not impressed w/ the Musicology single, I can never give up on him. This is a man who can (with a straight face) put a song like Jughead on the same album w/ Gett Off. He loves it all - the good & the bad. I HOPE the new album isn't bad & I'll always have hope that he can come w/ some good shit. Besides C&D & Rave, he hasn't failed me yet in 25+ albums...

The Revolution, SOTT, and Lovesexy bands just seemed to bring more to the table, musically. What we often credit to Prince (the man) I'm sure was more a collaborative effort . .. I've been saying this for years.. and now its well known that Levi, Andre, Wendy & Lisa were more than just an "influence" behind the music that went on to become big hits. I've heard Sonny, Tommy & Morris mention it a few times.. and in many ways these collaborations made what we call "Prince Music" so Alive. Lately the new music sounds stale...lifeless... compared to the earlier work. Thats what happens when his most trusted influence is a lifeless old book.

1) Wait and C
2) I don't think that P is planning to compete with the one-hit wonders of our days. 3) Listen to his innerviews: "There is a lot of coming and going in the business". "They get the audience they diserve" I don't think this sounds like he's so keen to produce a hit for the masses. From what I hear he wants to produce a hit for his fams. I'm just amazed that folks are declaring this CD to "suck" when they've only heard two friggin' songs from it!! I enjoyed most of "Emapcipation", but I truly hated the first three songs I heard off of it. To judge an entire album off of two songs is a little ridiculous. Granted, you may not have really liked the past few things he's done, but if you go in with the expectation that you won't like it, then all you will be doing is focusing on the negative. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)
