Jesse came up with the name... Princes theory is that the title of an album should be one of the songs contained therein, so when Prince heard that Jesse was releasing an album called Shockadelica without a song called the same, Prince took the word and wrote his song - and I think managed to release it on If I was Your Girlfriend before Jesse could release his LP, so it seemed like P came up with it first.

No the way I remember it is that Jesse's album came out way before the Prince single shockadelica, per nilsen said prince did it to aggravate jesse who was an old rival from the time. I think it was just a bit of one upmanship and it lends credence to jessie's and morris's assertions that prince stole lots of music from the time. "Jamie Star's a thief"

In addition to above:

I think Prince got his song played on MPLS radio, and that's why it seemed like Prince came up with the title first (although probably the only people who paid that much attention were the people in their local social/business circles some die-hard local fans??)

Hmm, the story I heard is that Prince said he would write the song for Jesse's album, Jesse went so far as to name the album based on the song --before he even got it -- an Prince punk'd him and kept it for himself. By that time it was too late and the title stuck. (Although I have always questioned whether the album cover was created before the song was pulled or recorded...never quite made sense to me so I always thought this story was a little suspect.)

bass was almost right.

Jesse came up with the name first. Prince thought is was a great name for an album, but told
Jesse that every great album with great title should have a great song with the same title on it.
So Prince quickly recorded a track called 'Shockadelica' himself to prove his point. He then got
it mastered within days and sent a promo to KMOJ in Minneapolis so they could play it on the
air before Jesse's album was released. Jesse was not amused as it made it look like he'd
stolen the title off Prince. Jesse's album was released the following month in October 1986.

Interestingly, 'Shockadelica' (the Prince song) was the first 'Camille' track to be recorded.
Soon after Jesse's album was released, Prince recorded another song which expanded on the
funky drum pattern he'd come up with for 'Shockadelica' and 'Housequake' was born. Prince
was so pleased with these funny, funky, quirky songs that he decided to record a whole album
like it, and 'Camille' was born. So it could be said that Jesse's album (with it's funky tracks
like 'Crazay' and 'She') was the inspiration for Prince's 'Camille' project.

I'm guessing that that promo is extremely rare and difficult if not impossible to find?

From whast I remember from reading DMSR, by Per Nelson, Jesse had named his album Shockidelica, and didn't have a title song. Prince wrote the song for him and offered it up, but Jesse declined, so Prince decided to release it, and Prince's version (I believe) did come out first, making Jesse look like he'd ripped off the title.

At the time, Jesse was bad mouthing Prince a good bit on various interview shows, so Prince sort of put out Shockadelica as a bit of revenge, because as Jesse said, more people were aware of Prince and would assume that Prince came up with it, not Jesse.

Jesse's album was released first - October 1986.
Prince's track was aired on radio first - September 1986
Prince's track was then released in May 1987

And yes, I had also heard that after Prince had recorded his track he offered it to Jesse for
inclusion on 'Shockadelica'. Jesse declined the track, probably because he wanted to escape
just being seen as a 'Prince protegee', and show that HE was doing his own thing and writing
his own albums. Having the title track to his new album be a Prince song would've undermined
that. When Jesse turned the track down, that's when Prince rushed to get it played on radio
as a kind of 'f-u', Jesse was pissed!

A relative of mine who was in Jesse's band at the time pretty much said the same thing.
Prince offerd the song to Jesse as a title cut but Jesse declined and Prince give me my song back and put it out himself.

Sorry, I meant that Prince said "give me my song back" then put it out himself.

It dont really matter as Jesse's album is pretty bad, bad 80s funk and bad production, the Sly Stone collaboration is bad too.

Princes single is better than any song on that album.

To Jesse's credit, his guitar playing is awesome...

Pretty bad??? What about prince album or Newpowersoul, or Rave? Uh? Pretty bad albums I must say. Jesse's Shockadelica is one of the best albums I ever heard.

Ok, it was me... I first had the idea of starting a delicatessen shop in the East quarter of Paris about 15 years ago. Then, I thought, how about instead of selling pig's trotters I maybe could sell human trotters (hands), and then my PR consultant at the time (who I later I later fired) advised I could call the shop 'Shockadelica'. With this in mind I had a steely advertising campaign that would shock the Parisian locals in order to publicise my fervent myopic marketing strategy. Then, would you know it, who walks in but Jessie Johnson, he buys a couple of trotters and decides to write a song about it...

I pretty much dug all of Jesse albums. Shockadelica was great!!! Loved the Sly colab/vid/remix as well! I must admit I don't listen to it as much anymore but when I do I realize that good music brings back good memories!!! oh well to each their own...
