He's a rock and roll hall of famer now...20 year anniversary of his rise in pop culture.....wouldn't this year be prime-time for the folks over at VH-1 to give us a Behind The Music?

Wonder if they'd be anything new in it....interviews with the family, childhood friends, etc. Wouldn't mind watching that.

Or has something like that been done already?

No it hasn't been done.. as Prince has been almost all but forgotten on music television for the past years. They did do a small "Friends of the Artist" show in 1998 which I was in.

With the book "possessed" out.. and not so much as a wimper of a legal challenge from Londel & P's Legal Camp (fact is fact) VH1 has the foundation to put a very shocking "Behind The Music" together. Prior to the book and years agao when P was still a big name it was really hard for anyone to put something like this together with all the "hush-hush" agreements you had to sign to work with him.

I hope something like this never comes out.. as even they stay clear of the dirt on his personal life and the subject stays on the music business.. you'll still have tons of people lining up saying they weren't paid, prince stole this.. broke this agreement.. yadda yadda. BUT in the end they all still say they respect him as the most talented musician in the world.

I do hope they do something like that soon; it's way overdue.
'Cause your friends don't dance, and if they don't dance... well, they're no friends of mine.

It seems to me that "Behind The Music" has been converted from a show answering the rhetorical question of "What ever happend to..." to another marketing device. Case in point, Britney Spears had a "Behind The Music" episode to promote her new album and she has only been around for the past several years. Perhaps it can be viewed as ironic since she isn't meeting the commercial expectations that have been placed on her.

The BTM about Prince would have to be 2 hours long -- I've seen a few that were 2 hours long (can't remember which ones, Sheryl Crow was one I think).

It would work, especially since it would spend a lot of time on 1999, PR, and SOTT -- the 3 heavyweights in Prince's catalog.

Exactly -- how does SHE get a behind the music, with only 3 albums (at the time, with one coming out)? She's AWFUL -- no Grammys, no critical acclaim . . just tons of record sales. I guess that's what counts (not guess, I know that's what counts nowadays) confused

4 albums she has put out-

and the only reason they did that, is because the promotion of it, and the risque things she does on stage.

i like britney, but i think a prince BTM is way-overdue

I haven't seen a Behind The Music recently, but doesn't the artist in question usually participate? I don't think this is a question of VH1 ignoring Prince (although they do in other ways). I think the reason there isn't a Prince: Behind the Music is that Prince would probably not participate or support it.

Hey! Didn't he buy Chaka's BTM from VH1 because it focused too much on *the negative*? Or was that just a rumor...?

NEW YORK -- The artist formerly known as Prince leaned forward, pointed to my notebook and raised his voice. "I'm not going to be on 'Behind the Music,"' he asserted. "Will you please say that?" It's a demand in the guise of a question. And he was laughing, but he was also dead serious.

It's not that the Artist -- the tag by which he's come to be known, for convenience as much as metaphoric resonance -- doesn't watch the popular VH1 series himself. As he sat in a lounge at Electric Lady Sound Studios in Greenwich Village, he cited chapter and verse of shows about Hammer, TLC and Lenny Kravitz -- all, significantly, African-American artists who, like him, have had run-ins with the music industry. It's just that he has no patience for the show's inevitable 12-step-derived emotional arc: Performer enjoys huge success and gets ego-crazy; performer makes, then ruefully acknowledges, enormous personal and professional mistakes; performer makes amends and, chastened, moves on.

There actually was a Prince Behind the Music episode done in 1997. When Vh1 did the five year anniversary marathon for the show in 2002 I saw it. Don't worry, there wasn't any interesting facts or cool revelations. Just Prince looking like he wanted to be somewhere else.
Strange, but I'm more comfortable around you naked.

They have another show "Driven" for people who don't participate.
