NPG is a real band. They are always thight. Virtuous and funky!

I love the Revolution, but more for their image. I miss some of them, but then again nothing stays the same. Prince did the right thing back in the days by dismissing the band, so he had a chance to grow.

Just wondering how come everyone refers to the "SOTT band", instead of Madhouse ? They were called Madhouse. I clearly remember the posters with Prince in his yellow mac, "Prince and Madhouse present Sign 'O' the Times (wear peach and black)". Doesn't anybody else remember that band being called Madhouse ???

"Madhouse" was a band on it's own (they didn't have Sheila E. as the drummer) and they were there as a support act...

The NPG without a doubt (From ONA live until....???) I think they are really more musicians in their souls. The Revolution was ok but it's seems for me - and may be for some of you guys ? - just close to a souvenir as a top era for our man. Put some past shows about that time and havea look. Chemistry ? Yes, for sure. A real band with real top musicians ? I don't think so. Give it up for Renato, Rhonda, John... bow clapping

Well, NPG is a broad term, isn't it? Haven't the NPG existed from 1990-2004? But I have to take the Revolution over the NPG. Undeniably, the NPG, technically speaking, are better musicians. But I think the Revolution had more passion and soul. And I think it is obvious that Wendy & Lisa had an impact on Prince's songwriting. Just look at the types of songs he wrote during their tenure in the band. Of course, it's possible that they just happened to be lucky to be there while he was at his peak. Plus Wendy & Lisa mixed so great with Prince vocally. The only major fault with the Revolution would have to be Bobby Z.

Aside from John Blackwell beating the hell out of David Z., I'd say The Revolution. THough both bands have great musicians...The Revolution were with Prince at his ultimate peak, and he pushed them in ways that I don't believe the NPG has been pushed. From small and intimate shows to the largest of concert halls and arenas on the planet with the most insane of crowds.

Muhamad Ali vs. Tyson same concept.

No, it's more like comparing B.J. Armstrong and Tyron Lue (spelling?). It's all about timing and how they fit in. Armstrong being comparable to the Revolution and Lue to the NPG.

I have to say that I love the Revolution, God knows I do, but the current lineup, minus Mike Scott is pretty talented all together....no body, and I mean no body, abuses a drum kit (and a small one at that) the way Mr. Blackwell does. Just listen to 'Everywhere' from TRC..... lol

ThE ReVolUtiOn
was by far the better band. The records were definately more daring.
The collection of songs on each record made for complete works of art.
The new stuff just isn't ispiring to me. I listen to anything Prince has done up to Lovesexy over an over and it never get's old. 1999, Purple Rain, Around The World In A Day, and Parade were the bombs. biggrin

THE ANSWER IS THE REVOLUTION FOR THIS REASON I THINK, WHEN PRINCE WAS PERFORMING AT A YOUNGER AGE HIS MUSIC WAS RAW AND HIS FANS WERE YOUNG,US AT THAT TIME. NOW THAT HE'S OLDER, MORE MATURE HIS SUBJECT MATTER CHANGES THEREFORE HIS SOUND CHANGES AND WE WANT TO REMEMBER WHAT WAS YOUTHFUL.
IN ''1999'', ''THE BEAUTIFUL ONES'' DID THE ''BAT DANCE'' TO A SONG CALLED ''HOUSE QUAKE,'' UNTIL THIS ''IRRESISTIBLE BITCH'' WHO HAPPEND TO BE A ''LADY CAB DRIVER'' PULLED OUT AN ''A.U.T.O.MATIC'' AND SHOUTED OUT,'' ''LETS GO CSAZY''.

In my heart , it's the Revolution cuz that's when P was at his "commercial" peak . But it's kinda hard - at least on record anyway - to tell the difference between the Revolution and P ( as the one-man band ) . But the albums I find myself checking for the most when I'm in P mode , are NPG's Diamonds & Pearls ( minus the bad raps ) and the Gold Experience . They sound an awful lot like "live" studio jams ...

Prince's best band.....ever...?

Comprised of these individuals:

SHEILA E
MIKO WEAVER
DR FINK
BONI BOYER
ERIC LEEDS
ATLANTA BLISS
CAT GLOVER
LEVI SEACER JNR

NOTABLE MENTIONS GO 2 WALLY SAFFORD AND GREG BROOKS.

THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE WERE HIS GREATEST BAND MUSICALLY, CONCEPTUALLY AND WERE WITH PRINCE AT HIS ULTIMATE CREATIVE PEAK 1987-89 WHAT THEY ACHIEVED AS A BAND WAS MAGNIFICENT. JUST WATCH THE TAPES AND LISTEN 2 THE AFTERSHOWS.....NO CONTEST!

2ND BAND IS OF COURSE THE REVOLUTION

THE BEST EXAMPLE OF THE NEW POWER GENERATION IS

THE DIAMOND AND PEARL VERSION AND THE THE BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCE/LOVE 4 ONE ANOTHER VERSION.

Being that Get Wild is a song from one of Prince's weakest music periods, no thank God I can't imagine the Revolution playing that crappy tune. Bobby may not be the strongest drummer but neither was Ringo, and they both will be remembered for what band's they were in.

It was Prince And The Revolution I fell in love with. I was heartbroken when the band broke up. Still, the Lovesexy band won me over. I loved that band too. biggrin

I didn't love, but I LIKED the NPG of '94/'95. Since then I have given up on following who's in his band and who's not. I noticed Candy Dulfer on Jay Leno. As for the rest of them, I have no idea who they are and I pretty much couldn't care less. shrug

I wouldnt want to. The new band playing the old stuff is just so over the top and destroys the old material.

The Revolution knew how to leave some space in the music.

- Agreed. But overall, my fave band is NPG. For me, 1994-95 years were magical. And my fave NPG was the smallest one, without the rappers and Levi. Only Prince, Barb, Sonny, Michael and Hayes

Current band is the best he's ever had. They can play anything.

Prince has mentioned (I can't remember where) how limited and somewhat cold the Revolution were. With this band he can play anything from his entire catalogue.

- Well, I think the Revolution deserve the credit for helping Prince create some true masterpieces. But they were tehcnically very limited. And Prince´s sound became too ´white´ in the mid-80s although is nice. I prefer the hard funk of the NPG

I'm feeling you on that pick. Shall I take it even further? "THE EXPANDED REVOLUTION" w/ Miko Weaver on rhythm guitar, Shelia E on percussion, Eric Leeds and Matt Bliss on horns, Jerome, Wally, and Brooks on background vocals and dances! That's an infuson of the Sign of the Times/Lovesexy band with all members of The Revoltion. Peep that show he did in Detroit on his birthday in 1986 and you'll see what I mean! Listen to the album version of "It's Gonna Be A Beautfiful" with the expanded Revolution over the video/movie version with that band (Boni, Levi, Cat, etc.,)The album version kicks it's ass!!!!! They were at that time UNFUCKWITTABLE!!!!! All of his bands afterwards were tight no doubt, but this particular band was the band Prince brought the funkiest shit out of! You could see the fire in his eyes when he rocked with them back in the day. It's not the same fire I see in his eyes today. He's still kicking ass with this current version on the NPG (especially with RAD being in the mix; which I've been a longtime fan of hers before she even joined). Prince is like Miles Davis, he has to grow and does not belive in repeating himself (plus he's a Gemini like Miles) That's why we have those particular moments in his career; for nostalgia sake. Again man, you're way on point for your pick because for a longtime, that was my pick. Shit, it's hard to pick with this cat because either way it goes, Prince is still a bad motherfucker who always have bad motherfuckers to back him! peace
