while I don't agree with your funk scale, I can only give the song a 4-5, which means its ok - not great, not bad, not special. But OK.

Since Musicology denotes a course or lesson, I'll stick to that theme and give it a C

That's true...For some reason I have to listen to a CD in the car, in order to fully grasp it. I guess that's where I spend most of my time.

Sorry but I'm going to give it a 2----just keeping it real!

I think it's has got to be the worst Prince song released ever and he is doing it on his biggest comeback yet. Maybe he should do the arena tour and not release any new music.

Sorry I have to keep it real and give it a 9. Its way funkier than anything on NewPower Soul. The Bass line really fucks with my Soul. Giving this a low rating would be like giving Hot Pants or Mother Popcorn or Make It Funky a low rating. This is one of the most funky james brown influenced songs since Sexy MF. taking The Work up a notch. Great for live shows, which is what he was going for on NewPower Soul. The only reason I didn't give it a 10 is because out of the james brownish stuff, it's not touching HouseQuake. I had way low expectations after reading the way people slamed it hear. But when I did hear it, I knew I had to go to the Npgmusic club party and work the floor a little.

Righteousone, you're probably right; it just seems like Pretty Man, The Work and now Musicology are all James Brown songs. Very little of Prince is still there. I think The Time used to be Prince's outlet for James Brown type stuff, but Morris had his own thing going too, so it worked. Now it's just Prince doing a tribute and his originality seems lost in the mix somewhere. Jam of the Year strikes me as very boring and dull, but still more original than the James Brown stuff.

Tell you what though.....change "Jam of the Year" to "Irresistable Bitch." .....Yeah, that'll work!

The Time material was Prince funk. Prettyman, Sexy MF, The Work, and now Musicology is Prince doing James Brown Funk. He still makes it his own, but The Time shit isn't as derivative from any one predecessor. Oh, and Musicology gets a 3 (minus 2 for lack of originality and creativity).

Since when did Prince not rip off James Brown? Yeah he is original. But he has always been sort of a hybrid. "Hybrid" the word Jonie Mitchell used to discribe Prince. Jimmy Nolen's guitar chimes became a big part of the minneapolis sound, and jimmy's influence can be heard as early as Sexy Dancer. I understand that people are saying it's more James than Prince these days. Im just saying he always took time out to do a James Brown rip off hear and there a la HouseQuake, New Position, so why rip him apart for it now?

For the record James Brown plays organ and piano. Just look up the album credits. Besides have you ever seen George Clinton play anything? And he has influenced everyone from Dr. Dre to The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Not to be insulting, but that was one of the most ignorant replys I ever read. Im think Im pretty much done.

Looks like you need a new rubric.

Your Funk o Meter as you call it is not accurate. 1999 is a pop song and not very funky. Erotic City - Funky as sh*t!

Cannot say that musicology is too terribly funky, but I like it.

7/10.

Even in context with the other songs, erotic city deserves to be higher on the funk-o-meter than this. disbelieflol

Anyway i'd give musicology a ...5. nod

I agree, Erotic City is probably the funkiest Prince song ever put down. Sure, others like Let's Work, DMSR, 1+1+1 is 3, Housequake, etc are some of the funkiest tracks put down, but Erotic City reigns supreme. That groove is unstoppable.

Anyway, back 2 the subject, I would give Musicology (the live version) a 7. Since I haven't heard the entire studio version, I won't judge that one.

Whatever funk status you give to "The Work Pt. 1". It's just not that hooky, and I have heard it a few times now.

I'd have to give the song a 6.5/10. It's a pretty good, funky song, but it's missing that addictive X factor that Prince's best songs always had.

It's a good pop tune, I think a great single, I would have prefered "What do you want me to do" or better still "You want me" But its as good if not better than the work pt 1. But most important to me, I like it, sooooo 7!

I give it a 7, I like the groove a lot. It is very "James Brownish" though, not very original, but still a decent groove.

Read it again. I said it isn't as derivative from any one predecessor. Musicology is less of a hybrid and more of a copy. In other words, I agree with you. smile

omg , I forgot about DMSR.
PUt that in place of 1999 for all yall that say 1999 is not a funk track but a pop one. DMSR is bad, and hearing it live recently has only solidified its classic status as a great funk jam.

Agreed.....Musicology LIVE is a 8.5 on the richter scale!!! Erotic is a definite 10.0, but what about FACE DOWN.....wont hear it anymore cause of the cussing ban....but definitely one of the FONKY tracks in P history!!!!

Problem is, this song is just by the numbers. The beauty to Housequake was that it was a HUGE change in direction. Erotic City, same thing... when he puts out something that makes you go, "HOLY DANG, THAT'S ALL UP ON THE NEW TIP" - that's when the ranking goes ABOVE average for a Prince song. Kiss - that's another one - the man was pushing.

Musicology gets a 5. No - it's less interesting than 1+1+1=3. Musicology sounds A LOT like "The Work Pt. 1" - which was cool funk, but HARDLY anything to jump up and praise.
