Get the album free when you attend the concert?

Any dumb-ass here who intends to attend a concert and is still gonna buy the CD from a store?

Come on, own up, it wouldn't be the same without a show of hands from the "fams".

Depends on how long folks have to wait for the concert to hit their town I imagine. I could see some not wanting to wait months to get the cd in their hands. Fortunately, I won't have that problem.

"Prince also said he was hoping to provide free "Musicology" CDs to those who buy concert tickets. "Usually the people who purchase concert tickets, they've been supportive of my music for a long time -- for over 20 years now," he said..."

Ok, so...Prince is wanting to give free CDs away to his fans that attend the concerts for being so supportive of him during his career...and the immediate reaction on here is to insult the fans and call Prince/Paisley Park greedy??...

It's the 'strategy' and 'planning' I'm a little confused about, but I guess given time it will fall magically into place and everyone will be happy.

But at this stage, as I understand it ....

1. Prince is offering tickets and guaranteeing that ticket holders / concert attendees will receive a copy of the new CD inclusive of the ticket price.

If the distribution is to avoid postage and packing costs, the CDs will presumably be handed out at the concerts? If that were to be the case, then (assuming tickets sell) it would mean Prince has already arranged for approximately 10,000 CDs to be shipped off the press ready for Reno in a month's time?

2. The tracks on the CD will be available for download at 77 / 99 cents each dependent upon NPGMC membership in the coming weeks.

3. Prince is also seriously looking for a record company that will be 'hyped enough' to 'do the work' and push an album where tens of thousands are already being given away to concert-goers and sold by way of download on his own site?

The $$$ of the CD will probably be worked into the ticket price somehow-maybe Prince will take less at the gate in exchange for record sales totals.

Secondly, the longer it takes to sign with a label, the more likely it is to get the album at the concert before it shows up at the shops.

Another possibility:

If the CD price is somehow worked into the ticket price (and not just a "free giveaway"), then what this might be doing is automatically guaranteeing Prince more record sales. Because each audience member would "technically" be getting a copy . . .

What do you think?

Sorry, I didn't see your post . . but that's exactly what I mean! He's going for the record sales this time, instead of just pure concert income.

Eh, it's a safe bet he's going to be playing some music from this new album on the tour, and I always enjoy live music more if I've heard the studio version of it, so yeah, I'm gonna buy the album first. I can always give the spare to a friend.

If this makes me an idiot or a fam, oh well. neutral

essentially the way im seeing it is that prince wants the album pushed through every avenue possible

the free album thing he SAYS that its cos alot of people who go to the shows are longtime fans who've seen him tonnes of times before. so in essence he's saying he's giving them the album free. obviously i guess he could just do that through the npgmc but whatever

It's not so hard. Prince is notorious for promising really cool stuff, but when it comes down to it rarely lives up to it. What this excitement over free cd's will cause however is more fans joining the club for tickets and more fans buying more tickets.

Which... yea... means more $$

woot!

Of course Paisley park is in your wallet isn't saying the same as Prince is greedy. Saying that could also simply mean that you need your wallet to find Paisley park, which is true btw! (watch it now universal wink )

nice try but no cigar I'm afraid , we know what the "paisley park is in your wallet" really implied , and its plain wrong .If Prince is giving away the music at the concerts , then its a great thing , but its too much to expect unanimous support from the org on something generous Prince does nowadays I guess.

Is Paisley Park a non prfit organization that simplies gives things away to fans who dont think that they should have t pay for anything? Doesnt cost money to run Paisley Park and print CDs and maintain a website?

They won't have the CDs at the concert venues - that would be a logistical nightmare for everyone involved. For one thing, each city on the tour would be getting their copies before the following city and the chances of bootleggers making a profit off that kind of 'staggered release' would prohibit it. The other thing is it's not logical to be handing out copies to concert attendees as they enter or leave the show - it would take forever and is completely inefficient. Most likely when you purchase a ticket they will mail or e-mail vouchers for a free copy to redeem at a local record store when it finally streets.
