Is the term "Fam" Dead?

I noticed that Prince sorta paused and called us "supporters" versus fams...Could it be he finally realized how cult-like the term sounded?

and will fams, who used the term finally realized what dolts they were for using the term in the first place?

wink

i've just noticed that too, as of late..."supporters" sounds a heckuva lot more grown-up (and dignified) than "fams". good on ya, prince. thumbs up!

and yeah, hopefully folks catch on to this and drop "fams" from their vocabulary...but i don't think it'll happen straightaway. giggle

LOL I don't think "fam" will ever go away. But I think prince was just using "supporters" because the general public would have no idea what "fam" meant.

if people are still referring to Prince as prince I think it'll take a LONG time to wipe away "fam"

but damn I'll be happy if Prince quits encouraging the use of that word!

I dont think Prince uses the term anymore. When he was on TAvis, he said he was a "fan" of Beyonce. So I think he's over that "fan is short for fanatic" obsession. at least it seems like it.

Prince referred to his fans as "fans" on Tavis Smiley several times, didn't he?

I don't know if the term is "officially" dead, but it's certainly dead to me.

I always got the impression that some folks at this site thought "fam" was a Prince invention. It wasn't.

Folks had been using that slang as short for "family" way before Prince. Dudes I went to school would greet me and other folks with that while giving us a pound. "'Sup, fam."

And, at least, in that usage, you knew it was sincere. Prince's usage was disingenuous, a euphemism for fans -- despite his rhetoric.

Prince probably stopped using "Fam" because a negative connotation has developed around it over the years (thanX to the NPGMC crazees).

If there's one thing I hate more then the word "fam", is a person who calls themselves one.

I hope so. I never, ever liked that "fam" shit.

Had a bad experience on a job that used to refer to its employees as family.

However, supporter seems more appropriate now. Especially with the cost of ticket and merchandise prices. I'd definitely say we're supporting him and his endeavors.

Yes, I am proud to say I "support" Prince's efforts and always will.
