i hated prince's performance on ellen the only thing i liked was candy's solo.
it was such a pop performance and he choose songs that he shouldn't have done. two of his most known songs done with bad vocals. what happened to a note on the guitar i thought it was a disgrace and the show in general was exceptionly cheesy. so many people screaming and uncomfortable close ups. there was no musicainship just americanization. from australia

i think this is an example of postmodern prince music. there are no art movements in the world so all he can do is stand still

It was no pop performance, it was a vegas performance... I did like "I Feel For You" though, the rest was just too "vegas-y" for me... He should lose some players... And he should lose Mike Scott altogether, he is an annoying guitarist, 100% technique 0% soul/feeling... Neversin. O(+>NIИ<+)O

Prince was on Ellen. I mean, he wasn't at a one-off or aftershow, you know? He knows what daytime talkshow studio audiences want - radio hits with lyrics they can sing along to and remember what it was like before they had mortgages and stretch marks. He wants to pique people's interest so they buy the new cd, buy tickets to his show, etc. Heck, they're even selling his Aladdin DVD on Ellen's website. His song selection was just a reflection of working the business end of things if you ask me. You DID ask me, didn't you? "She made me glad to be a man"

jilly bean are so so right.
really are i was taking the performance so seriously but i haved to understand where it was filmed. in an LA studio. and i'm actually glad those people who can only hear one minute of a song get to enjoy him too. i'm not being sarcastic and i tottaly agree with you. and you have actually changed my opinion. i not bagging his performance i'm bagging a Los Angeles TV show audience. i do agree with you jelly bean

I cross posting cos this seems to 'second' ome thoughts on here...
.... as for my thoughts on the show, I agree that the vocals on I Feel For You were weak. Kiss felt flat to me as well. And, well, I HATE when he does Nothing Compares.. but all in all, I'm happy. Their was good chemsitry between he and Ellen in the interview and it's just good to see him in the public eye again. Plus, again, "we" weren't necessarily the target audience for this show. My sister (who took my to see P for the 1st time in 1988) called after the show. She has not been interested in Prince for a LONG time now. But she LOVED the show and called to make sure I'd seen it and to ask me to let her know about any MPLS shows so she can get tickets and go....That's what these appearances are about. Reminding old fans what he's about and getting them to the shows... ...

exactly. he wasn't on there solely for us fans/friends/freex/geex/fams/whoever, he got the rest of the populus to try and cater to. be annoyed at it if you wanna, but he's tryin to pull other folks in and tryin to get their ducketts when/if he comes to their town.

His TV-appearances of late have some cringeworthy moments, but that isn't entirely Prince to blame.
For some reason, television-talkshow producers seem keen on letting the audience take their share in taking over the show with a polluting riot-like noise. Every single interview I have seen him do on Leno had the lame-ass NPG 'fams' screaming their asses off, when they instead could shut up in time and let Prince do the work he's there for --- marketing. There is NO need for a rousing cheer everytime he opens his mouth and delivers a 'hot' word like 'real music', 'NPGMC', 'supporters', 'Musicology', 'new tour', etcetera. On the other hand, Prince sadly is content to keep a low profile and decline on every attempt to get a serious conversation underway. Of course, American talkshows(-hosts) are the superficiality in flesh, but he could show a more socially-conscious approach to his media-outlets. If he is to 'let the music speak for itself', don't talk about music and bring some depth in lyrical content ('The rainbow children' era), and be a human being, let the nation see a bit of personality when discussing the music and other topics. Having seen three TV-appearances in two weeks, he just stands up to accept extraordinary praises, plays along in letting the host tell about the tour, plays mystery and leaves. He could leave a more lasting impression on people by being a talented musician and a wonderful human being. I'd rather see him on Leno discussing the excessive criticism on Mel Gibson's new film with Mel and Jay, that for sure is a thing he would be able to intelligably comment on. He wouldn't even have to express a certain opinion. Just being on television doesn't garantuee quality-time, I'm afraid. As for the music, I trust his judgement to play what he sees fit, when he sees fit. Be it too Vegas, the music is suited for a broad audience to pick up.

When did he play "I Feel For U?" I saw Kiss and Nothing Compares...but not I feel for U.
I did not like the version of Nothing Compares...but that's just my opinion...I like the original version better. I did kinda like the new version of Kiss...but what bothered me was that it made me start thinking that maybe Musicology really will be a bunch of re-done past hits with one new song...and that makes me sad. I want an album of all new songs. My $0.02

This was the last song Prince played, a total of 3...hope you can find it somewhere, cause this was the best of the 3. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I only saw Kiss by now, and I have to say, I agree, or at least could understand why people wouldn't like it (or the Leno show). It's really a whole different sound. Still fine with me, though. And I can see that, since Musicology is mostly a Greatest Hits tour that is supposed to please whole arenas of casual fans, this is just the right thing.

I'm actually surprised to hear all this criticism of the band lately. I for one love the big sound, but that's just me. I like hearing all the different instruments. I'm big into vocal harmonies and horns and guitar solos (need more of those!)
But, perhaps we should wait until we actually hear this sound in a live setting before we make snap judgements about what Prince should have in his band. I'm sure it sound a lot different (and better) live than it does on TV. Just my 2 cents, take it or leave it....

If any1 thinks they can do better go up there and sing on Leno or Ellen urselves. Always analysing this and that. I just enjoy it.

I too like the big sound and most of what they are doing. I just didn't like the particular version of Nothing Compares. However, I may have liked the new version of Kiss even more than the original (which is far from my favorite song).

The thing I liked about this version of Nothing Compares, is simply that I thought Prince gave a very strong vocal performance. And I loved the way they ended the song too. It gave me chills.
