The word "genius" doesn't do him justice. He's been a funkateer, showman, provocateur, guru, entrepreneur, slave, and, ultimately, unclassifiable enigma. He takes on the big topics - like sex and God and politics and sex and God - blending them into a wondrous songbook that splits the difference between pop and R&B. Simply put: the world would be much less interesting without him.
