For those that Attended Tues. Ellen Taping I've seen numerous reports on the NPGMC Boards and on this site that Prince performed Bambi during Tuesday's taping. This question is for those that attended the taping..What was Ellen's reaction?

I was looking for her but I couldn't find her. I wanted to see her reaction too. She was suffering from a cold so maybe she went backstage to recover a bit. She was sucking on lozenges and drinking tea all through the taping.

I'm sure he ripped it up...that is one of my favorite guitar jams. I just find it interesting that he performed it on the show. I don't think he meant anything deragatory by it, I mean in actuality the songs lyrics are a little tame. The song is not anti-gay/lesbian, just a story of love and loss with a little twist. I posed the question on this thread because I was curious to know how the show's host took it. She did mention that she had been there since day-one and even held up her copy of the For You Lp so it's safe to assume that she knew the song existed. I'm just curious about the reacation in the studio.

To answer your question, Ellen was dancing next to her producer's desk while Prince played Bambi. I laughed when he went into the beginning riff, thinking "no way he's going to play that", and of course, yes he did. Ellen was maybe 5 feet in front of me, and jamming to the song big time. The way she responded to Bambi made me think she's requested it personally.
Hi to all the NPGMC people I met last night! You all made the experience even cooler! P.S. I dont know if I will be seen on the show itself, but look for a black and gold tie-dyed jacket.

I thought were joking about Prince performing this... Now this is the performance i wanna see!!! Just to add my 2cents, i don't think, as some have mentioned on the org, that it's at all derogatary towards lesbians. "London, i've adopted a name that has no pronounciation.... is that cool with you?"
"YEAH!!!" "Yeah, well then fuck those other fools!"

Sounds like Ellen enjoyed Bambi. Remember, she is a comedian and does have a sense of humor.
As for Prince's shyness, well, we all know he's shy, when not on stage. He's been on Leno a few times and was probably more comfortable. Got my VCR set. It'll be great to watch this when I get home tonight. Nothing like a Prince nightcap to keep me up the rest of the night.

Still, that song does play off the horrible old myth about "just haven't found the right man." Was lame in "Chasing Amy." Is lame when Prince sings it. But he was young and naieve and it rocked, so i forgive him.

That's what I've been thinking all along. Wouldn't be surprised to find out that she'd asked him to play it.

Bambi is NOt DEROGATORY against Lesbians and anyone thinking this is MISTAKEN. IF anything PRINCE is FRustrated and he'd Like to CONVERT a LESBIAN over to HIM.. I would say Prince had a Thing for Lesbians. That kinda thing.

I wasn't too familiar with this song and looked up the lyrics to see what the fuss was about. It doesn't seem derogratory at all. IMO it seems like it's a song about a guy who found out the girl he likes, likes girls too...and maybe prefers them to him...and it's his way of letting her know he knows about this, but still thinks she'd be better off with a man/him as he wants to be with her.
It's probably the only song that was about this subject at the time (if ever). I imagine if I was a lesbian...I would have figured what it was about, gravitated to it and probably have much respect for the artist that would even bring the subject up in a "I know what you like, but I want you too" kind of way. The lyrics are sly...and slightly tounge in cheek. Ellen would have been probably figuring out who she was or coming out to herself at the time this song came out...unless she was turned on to it later. My guess is that she either requested it or he played it in a humorous sense. Christian Zombie Vampires

Those were my guesses as well, but you have to understand that in the Gay and Lesbian community there is this heterophobic myth that straight men (and women) think they can 'cure' a homosexual through sheer sexual prowess and that is the 'thrust' of the song, so to speak...
