Did Prince dis Mel Gibson?

I dont think he outright said anything insulting, but he treated Mel to a little sarcasm and awkward humour, perhaps at his expense

Why do I think this? Well..

When P danced over to the stage, he plopped down into his seat cutting right past Mel not greeting him with a handshake or anything.

Later when Jay referred to Mel, Prince was pretty condescending to him. In mock awe, he exclaimed "Mel Gibson, whats shakin' bro? Hey what you doin after the show?"
to which a confused Mel said "I dont know, dancing I guess"
"Wanna, uh, maybe catch a movie?"

It wasnt very funny but it was pretty sarcastic.

It could mean 1 of two things i think
1 he was expressing his disagreement with the movie...hey this is a total assumption
2. he could sarcastically be referring to the treatment Mel has been getting in the press.

What do y'all think?

He then tried to sort of slap his hand, the back of his hand whern it rested on the couch, and when Mel responded, Prince was already facing the other way!

I thought the song was OK but the performance kicked ass! his outfit, the moves, the dancing, and his overall good mood were amazing. Band was tight.

To be honest, Musicology sounded very bland, by the book funk. Sorry, I wasnt very moved, but it wasnt bad

I thought he wanted to go see the movie with Mel - wouldn't it be interesting to see those two discuss the movie?

I thought he was just having a fun time and poking fun at the controversy Mel's gotten over the movie.

I didn't detect any cynicism at all whatsoever.

I think people are reading into this to much. He shook Mel's hand after the interview, and "want to go see a movie" is hardly condescending.

Nah, it was definitely a jab. I'd be bored to tears if I hear Mel talk anymore about how he's still akind person to those who persecute him...YOU'RE NOT JESUS! You just made a movie about him!

Also, further along in the interview, when he talked about making real music - he acknowledged Mel - I took that as saying we make real music like he made a real movie. No following the formula for either of them.

[b]Prince, did indeed dis Mel. Since Prince is a so called JW, he disagrees with the movie, PASSION. Prince rocked the MIC on Jay Leno.WOW, he is so damn good looking and that suit was awesome.I thought the whole performance was great and loved MUSICOLOGY. biggrin

Jeez, you guys see Prince so much as breathe differently around someone, and you start the whole investigation into what it meant.

I think he was acknowledging his band, not Mel.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Actually he referred to his band and waved behind him, but the camera man was late following his gesture and squarely put Mel's face in the picture

I'm not sure exactly where this interpretation would stem from, based on what I saw:

1. After dancing, before he sat down, Prince slapped Jay's hand (didn't shake it), and then slapped/grabbed Mel's as well. So I guess he was also "dissing" Jay.

2. I didn't detect "mock awe" in Prince's tone. More like, "Hey, Mel, you just made an extremely serious movie about my Lord and Saviour that features Aramaic dialogue with sparse subtitles and it made 26 million dollars on it's first day. That's pretty cool." cool

3. He didn't actually "slap" his hand, rather he grabbed it and HELD it for a moment. That's a little different. And he wasn't "already facing the other way" when Mel responded.

4. Then, at the conclusion af the interview, he again acknowledged Gibson and shook his hand. When Jay said, "I'd like to thank Mel Gibson...", Prince pointed to Mel in order to direct the applause and cheers towards Mel.

On a final note, I'd be willing to bet you that Prince actually has respect for Mel's artistic courage, rather than having any animosity at all. There are obvious parallels between what Mel has done and what Prince has been talking about regarding artistic freedom.

There is no reason at all to think that Prince was expressing displeasure with Mel or his movie, and to try and create this impression is more than a toatal assumption -- it's simply ridiculous.

Now, I realize that you were just posing the question. The real interesting thing will be to read the responses.

Thank you for your voice of reason. I agree with all the points you made.

I didn't see any "dissing" of Mel by Prince, and I honestly can't understand how anyone could reach to that conclusion.

I saw Prince as being very respectful and a bit playful with Mel and didn't detect any sarcasm whatsoever.

I didnt say he was mean to him, im just saying Prince has a way of making fun of people, but hes not particularily funny. he's awkward. since mel was already jumpy/defensive/hopped up, he didnt quite get it and it made for some awkwardness.

but i guess since you guys know him so well, my point is moot.

ive never gotten into his head like you did tonight.

as for not understanding how i could come to that conclusion, i made my points. you just disagree with them..we have different sets of eyes, thats how we got the two different impressions.

sorry lets all go back to stating which album is better than the others. cuz we all know thats based on facts.

my apologies.

I think Mel Gibson is a total idiot and he needed to be dissed a bit by somebody, I mean listen to him, he sounds like he thinks he is second in command to God or something. If anyone wants to see an ARTFUL movie about Christ, see 'The Last Temptation of Christ' or for god-sake even Ben-Hur!!
Personally . I think we are all Boring with No Lives cause all we do is talk about Prince,Criticize and Gossip. I need a Horny Man is what I Need and probably so do most of yas. We are Sexually Frustrated what we R... Amen..!!! - zelaire

I just saw the show and I think lil man tore it up...twice! As far as any dis towards Mel I disagree. His remark to Mel about "wanna go check out a movie? seemed more like he was referring to all the hype surrounding the movie. Being that it seems to be the talk of the town lately. I gots to say that I am excited about this year cause even though he never really went anywhere PRINCE IS BACK BABY!!!

I think P was being still sarcastic but not because of what's being said in this thread. They are both practical jokers. They've both done their thing and found God/Spirituality again.

But now that P acts like he has some biz sense (and needs to make those Masters worth something...and Hall of Fame is nothing to sneeze at! Not many people have a job for 20-25 years!), realize that: 1) He himself a WORLDWIDE audience on the same show with the most talked about movie in a long time (and in the churches too); 2) whatever guy was supposed to be on doing "comedy" was BUMPED. I think P has lots of respect for Mel, and vice versa. And Jay has much respect for both of them.

Plus, I really identified when P said that the Hall of Fame thing made him feel old. It sure did to me too! And the 80s coming back helps...too many Prince riffs, styles, etc. going on w/these chillun and they need to be schooled!
