1st Album....For You. Under appreciated? Since most of you out there are well versed in Princeology. Wanted to hear some feedback on what I think is a much over looked album "For You". I'm really feelin' it. A little dated but sometimes that's what is needed. "I'm Yours" unsung classic!

I only break that one out once in a blue moon. I have trouble getting past the disco sound of the late 70s. Just not for me. The next album, however, I like a lot and listen to much more often.
I appreciate "For You" for what it is and as an accomplishment for debut album, but I just don't get into it much any more. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/

As a 20 year fan of Prince through all his "periods", This is the 1st time I've heard "For You". Meaning the time of this post. Just for the longest time I had no interest in hearing this. It seemed to me that It might sound underdevolped. And it is. But that's kinda the appeal. Prince is known for "production" on a lot levels so it's cool to hear him in such a raw format. For You takes me back a long way. I think my first listen was in 84. I wore it out like the rest of them.
Just As Long As Were Together was pretty cool, and I still really dig Crazy You. I'll have to break it out this week. cracknbush

Listening carefully...,
"For You"- Hence the begining, 2 do what he did at that age speaks volumes. The tittle track, from the first breath of 'For You' the harmonies, the arrangments.Oh and thats all him. The simplicity of 'Crazy you'.

this is a splendid album; So Blue and I'm Yours are magnificent, but the sheer audacity of the title track is worth the entrance fee alone.
there is a little too much disco here, but hey, sometimes commerciality can be a warranted thang....c.f. Musicology.

Indeed. I love everything about it. At first, I was hesitant to listen to it because I had read that it is too slow. After listening to TRC, I gave it a chance and loved it. There's a lot more going on on this one than Norah Jones' debut. Gee, that girl's album is so boring.

It would bug me when someone would say that "Prince" was his first album. I saw the promotional photo (the big 'fro and letter jacket) for this in the back of Jet Magazine c. 1976 (77). That's when I fell in love with the man. But, I was NOT feelin' "Soft & Wet." [This message was edited Tue Mar 2 11:46:13 2004 by UptownDeb]

The funny thing I see about the topic of first hearing a Prince CD from a long time ago is this:
Those were different times than now in the way of music, politics, dancing, controlled substance use , etc...(but we'll stick to music for now). The mindset one would get from hearing 'For You' for the first time then versus now would be miles apart. Back then, you weren't hearing breakthrough sounds, recording qualities, digital copy-and-paste studio techniques, et al that you hear now and have been hearing for quite some time. Also, the Linn Drum (as I remember) wasn't used until some time after that album. There was an evolution in his music as well as with a lot of other musicians. Thus, this laid the groundwork for different methods in songwriting used on later recordings, both by Prince and other artists. He layered (overdubbed) his voice many times over to get a wider voice effect. I'm not saying he was the first to do it, but he has pushed the envelope in finding out what sounds good versus methods that get in the way of the overall song. Sure there was a lot of disco influence in some of those songs, but there was also funk and a bit of folk. So, I do agree that it is an under-appreciated album. Making sure to have this album in your collection may allow for more than a complete work as a collector of Prince's music. It could also allow for gaining a sense of this man's first public stab at something he loves. It is this album that first exemplified a sample of what was to be an incredibly growing talent in songwriting, production, and musicianship. I guess I had the privelege of first hearing this over 20 year ago, but hey, we're all catching up on something right? By the way, there's not a track on that album I don't like. Some more than others, but all in their own little way. The shining of Xpsiter..... I am MrVictor....
