wow you guys have been right all this time - SOTT does sound lo-fi!

i just had TRC on and then i put on SOTT and i can tell the difference BIG TIME!

let me try Parade and see if there's a difference.....nope...Parade sounds fuller.....let me try ATWIAD.....wow that one also sounds fuller.....

what the heck is goin gon there? i have listened to SOTT inside and out (every time i listen to it i hear something new, i do) but it has just dawned on me big time.

maybe Prince meant for it to be lo-fi. if so then i think that's ok. a lo-fi funk record? the dude is sick.

I love the production on Rainbow Children, Muse 2 Pharaoh especially with the beginning and the keyboard alternating sides. Gets me every time.

Stark contrast to SOTT.

Pick up the vinyl...that helps. The CD version you can just forget about it....that's the worst thing I have ever heard...

Is the vinyl really better? I'll pick that up then.

The vinyl is DEFINITELY 100% better. I have both and the difference is immediately noticeable.

I'll second that!

I've found that to be the case on several albums, like Genesis' Lamb Lies Down.... I put on the CD and was like, "What happened to the bass, man?"

Hubby bought a "special" gold pressing of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here that was supposed to have "amazing audiophile quality sound." Payed a nice piece of change for it. It sucks. I'd rather listen to my beat up vinyl. Even with all the ticks and pops, it breathes way more than the sterile CD version.
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

I think this was a problem of the beginning of the digital age of music. At first, I think many albums that were released on CD were poorly mastered due to lack of knowledge about how the music should sound on CD. Many CDs from that era are really poor and sound flat, as if they needed to be dialed down to accomodate the new HUGE sound that digital would bring. WRONG.

I would love to have this on an audio DVD right about now....

I've noticed that for the longest time. When I listen to SOTT while in the shower I have to turn the volume up to Maximum on my bathroom CD player. The player is a Sony and it really thumps on most CDs.

Speaking of stuff going on in the background on Starfish and Coffee. I posted this a few years back and never got a response (as I remember). At the very end of Starfish as the song is getting ready to fade out, there is something being said underneath everything else. I never noticed it until I was listening to the song with really good headphones. Anyway, Prince is saying something like this "Starfish on the go, a little bit of funk for your soul." He says it several times.

Has anyone else picked this up? And, if so, what exactly is he saying?

supposedly the vinyl masters were used to make those early cds, when in fact the master tapes needed to be remastered specifically with cd in mind.

The vinyl should sound hifi.
