Does Anybody Really Think This Will Be The Last Tour?

February 26, 2004 - You heard it....Leno announcing Prince, adding that he was starting his Musicology tour, where he will play his hits for the last time.

Do y'all think that's true, even though Prince himself said it?

Me, personally, I don't care if I ever hear the likes of Purple Rain, Let's Go Crazy, Take Me With U, 1999, Raspberry Beret, etc. for the trillionth time. I would prefer to hear him tearin' up some new stuff. I never understood that concept of touring, anyway. Why do performers always rehash their old stuff? Isn't the purpose of touring to promote the new album?

Just askin' shrug

Well didn't he say the same thing when he became "the artist" back in '93. I believe he said that he will not perform Prince songs anymore. What he should do is dust off some of his older songs that he never performs live. Wouldn't it be cool if he played something like "I'm Yours" or "Bambi"?

I thought the same thing at first. But -
Remember when Jay asked him "is the the last time, or is this like a Cher last time?"

And he also said he had to "make room for the new stuff." Why would he need to do that if this was his last tour?

It's only "the hits," and I wouldn't wager anything on that statement, either...this is like the third time he's said that. Just last tour he told the audience, "If you came to get your Purple Rain on, you're in the wrong house!"

this isn't his last tour...

this tour is to retire his hits from 10-20 years ago... so he's not going to perform "purple rain" "1999" etc ever again...

it's not his last tour... it's his last tour for these songs...

but i don't get it, if he's most known for these songs, then why retire them sad

i'm going to miss them

Anxiety

1. He said on Leno that he was going to retire his hits "for a while".

2. He said he was going to do so in order to "make room for the new stuff".

Artists do this all the time - Bowie did it in the late '80s with his Sound+Vision tour, announcing "no more Space Oddity, no more Ziggy, no more Let's Dance" - it sold him a lot of tickets, and when all was said and done it gave him the freedom to work on new stuff without people expecting the golden oldies. But eventually, he went right back on to doing all the classics, which he had supposedly "retired for good", but of course he - and his fans - all knew better. Not that anyone's complained about his little fib.

At least Prince was honest enough to say he was only retiring his hits "for a while".

Exactly (although the 'Sound and Vision' tour was 1990).
