The Grammies proved it. The Tonight Show proved it. Just when naysayers and haters find something irrelevant to harp on like his religion or business dealings, Prince kicks our asses and reminds us why he is STILL the man. He simply can't be beat onstage - even without the splits which I miss so dearly. He is nearly 50 and can still swing it in those heels! Come on, now!

When it looks like he is out of touch and chasing trends, we are brought to the realization that Prince has already been there and was waiting for us. And he has started to come back around the circle - bringing in new from the old; the future from the past. A true genius does this naturally and constantly - many can not keep up or understand at times and this explains why they are not geniuses.

Sure, the tour will kick more ass but when did a Prince tour do anything else? This time it is a all out crusade for real music by real musicians - a concept that declined in popularity along with several real musicians - including Prince. If there is any one pop star that can re-establish this, it is Prince. He is one of the last true artists in popular music.

Doubting Prince's future releases, as with doubting anything, is healthy - at least then you can be pleasantly surprised and you'll never be disappointed

If you don't doubt, you'll either have to be blindly happy with everything, or be disappointed to some extent.

If you fail to doubt, then unless your expectations are met, you either have to then lower your expectations (which would constitute blind acceptance, essentially), or you have to accept that your expectations were not met. Which i would call disappointment.

I suppose i ought to respond to the bit about "great" people. You are of course right, that people who truly have no doubt in relation to whatever it is that is relevant in their instance may become "great" people. They won't be the only people that do, but they might be the people pushing the boat out, yup. Fair play - if your expectations are without doubt AND they are met, then that's fantastic and everyone's a winner. When it comes to Prince, i feel personally that at times he has not lived up to expectation (oh the irony when i first heard Xpectation). So, wary of that historical evidence, I choose to doubt Prince in the knowledge that I can't possibly be disappointed.

That's fair enough isn't it?

Well my point is purely personal, and yes - quite pessimistic. I doubt future output - not massively, because i still believe it will be good - because that way i will be pleasantly surprised.

But don't get me wrong - i'm not big on controlling my emotions in this way. I just think that for me, it does pay to doubt prince. Because then i don't have my expectations dashed. That's it really - others may lower their expectations or, indeed, blindly satisfy - that's up to them. Or he may achieve those high expectations - which is cool because then i will be pleasantly surprised.

Now i need to go the men's room, where my expectations are (because of my pessimistic nature) that the toilets will each be blocked. I hope i am pleasantly surprised....
